call, he asked the man what happened.

e man, who’d been put o the train because he didn’t have
the fare, told him he had just come from a certain rehab facility.
Brown called it, but there was no record of him. Since he didn’t
appear to be an immediate threat to himself or others, the man
couldn’t be legally detained.

But his story just didn’t make sense. “It was a jumble of non-
sense,” Brown recalls.

So he and his partner, Sgt. Michael Castellano, urged the man
to go to a local hospital to sober up or, at least, to get checked
out. e man refused and appeared to be becoming increasingly
apprehensive.

Lt. Brown could have walked away at that point, but the man
was around the age of one of his own children and he couldn’t
