College visits can provide students with more than just the campus layout, types of students, and social life. Many schools are asking students, “Why do you want to attend our school?” Listening, observing, taking notes, and asking questions are skills that will further your research to identify the schools you want to apply to through a visit. Here are some tips: • Set up a folder for each college or university you visit. Take pictures and place them in the folder. After so many visits, they may seem similar to each other. • As you drive or fly to the school, reflect on the distance and how easy or difficult it would be for you to go back home other than during break times. Once at the information session and tour: PAGE 4 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – APRIL 25, 2024 COLLEGE COUNSELING • ACADEMIC PLANNING • CAREER COACHING (845) 628-0726 • www.guidedconsult.com 900 South Lake Blvd., Suite 8 • Mahopac, NY 10541 EMPOWERING students’ critical thinking skills through academic, career, and post-secondary planning. Contact us TODAY Ways to research and engage with colleges Tips from Dr. Deborah Hardy - Guided Consulting Guided Consulting, LLC 900 South Lake Blvd., Suite 8 Mahopac 845-628-0726 guidedconsult. com 1. Observe the size of the campus, the location of dorms and academic buildings, and ask about the size of classes. 2. Think about questions about majors, exploratory programs for undecided students, advisement support and research opportunities. 3. In the common areas or student center, watch student interaction, and take time after to grab something to eat and experience the food service. 4. Look at the bulletin boards in the hallways, the display cases in academic buildings, and notice how the school provides innovative initiatives and support for their students. These will also give you insight into the types of academic projects students are working on in their majors. 5. Ask about different activities and clubs. Colleges and universities expect students to become involved on their campus beyond Greek life. Find out about activity fairs to let new students become involved and how often they occur. 6. To prepare to be a college student, it is important to learn about academic support, professor availability, and career support for future internships. . When your visit is over, make sure you have a chance to look at the town outside the college or university. By having an organized process to visit schools, you will be able to create a list of schools you want to apply to that connect best with what you are looking for in higher education. By the way, have fun!

APRIL 25, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 11 BY VIM WILKINSON EDITOR Meet Patty Hinkley, a licensed real estate salesperson with Coldwell Banker Realty, specializing in residential real estate. A former Katonah-Lewisboro School District History teacher and a lifelong Westchester Country resident with over two decades as a Katonah homeowner, Patty’s deep understanding of the communities and the local real estate market make her the go-to choice for real estate needs in upper Westchester. In 2023 alone, her closed sales volume surpassed $15 million with 42 successful transactions. The awardwinning agent’s expertise extends to securing above-asking prices for sellers, reflecting her knowledge and insight into the local market. What are some key trends or shifts you anticipate in the local real estate market for sellers this spring? Fortunately for sellers, I do not anticipate any shifts in the market come spring. The continued lack of inventory in our local area, coupled with strong buyer demand, will continue to keep sales brisk, with many properties receiving multiple offers. What strategies do you recommend for sellers to stand out in the market? The best advice I can offer to sellers is to retain the services of a trusted real estate agent who can help expose their home to the widest number of potential buyers. Getting as many “eyes” on the property as possible is what I believe fuels the multiple offer situation, thus obtaining the best result in terms of offers for the seller. Given your experience and success in achieving above-asking prices for sellers, what advice do you have for homeowners looking to secure the best possible outcome for their sale? My advice for sellers is to price your property appropriately. I know that it is tempting for a seller to “shoot for the moon” and list high because they hear that it is a sellers’ market. However, I have always found that listing a property at its true value, or even just slightly below that point, will result in the largest gain for the seller. Many people love gardening because it allows them to spend time outdoors, and that simple pleasure is indeed a notable benefit of working in a garden. But the National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture notes that gardening provides a host of additional benefits, including helping people get sufficient levels of exercise, reduce stress and improve mood. As the weather warms up, consider these tips to help bring a garden back to life. Tips to revitalize a garden this spring Located in a convenient location in Mahopac, right on Route 6, Maple Grove Nursery is known for its quality and diverse selection of plants. It stands as a haven for plant lovers, offering an extensive array of flowers in all hues, sizes, and varieties. Maple Grove Nursery Maple Grove Nursery 713 Route 6 Mahopac 845-628-9513 • DISCARD THE DEAD WEIGHT. Discard dead plants that have lingered into spring and prune any perennials that need it. • TEST THE SOIL. Soil testing kits can be purchased at local garden centers and home improvement retailers. Such tests are inexpensive and can reveal if the soil needs to be amended to help plants thrive in the months to come. • MULCH GARDEN BEDS. Mulching benefits a garden by helping soil retain moisture and preventing the growth of weeds. Various garden experts note that mulching in spring can prevent weed seeds from germinating over the course of spring and summer. • INSPECT YOUR IRRIGATION SYSTEM. Homeowners with inground irrigation systems or above-ground systems that utilize a drip or soaker function can inspect the systems before plants begin to bloom. • TUNE UP YOUR TOOLS. Gardening tools have likely been sitting around gathering dust since fall. Serious gardeners know that tools can be expensive, so it pays to protect that investment by maintaining the tools. Sharpened pruners help make plants less vulnerable to infestation and infection. It’s almost gardening season, which means gardeners can start on the necessary prep work to ensure their gardens grow in strong and beautiful this spring. APRIL 25, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 19 All personal bias aside, I think wine always makes a great gift. Why? Several reasons…. A bottle of wine looks great on its own and is easily wrapped with a bit of flair. Wine keeps well; it can be opened immediately or tucked away for another time. And once it is opened, wine is eminently shareable. Maybe most important of all, it’s easy to make a gift of wine very personal. Here are a few ideas for optimizing a gift of wine for Mother’s Day…. Kick it up a notch. If Mom already has a favorite wine, that’s great. But rather than get her a new bottle of the same-old, give her an upgrade. She likes Chianti? A nice Chianti Classico Riserva will show you really care. If she always drinks Josh Cabernet, ask your wine merchant for something similar, but better (that’s a recco all wine pros relish). Echo her style. Is Mom a gardener? Wines with flowery labels abound. Is she a hiker? Scout the shelves for evocative landscapes. Horse lover? There are wines for that, too. Is Mom plotting a vacation to Europe soon? Snag her a sneak-preview wine. Am I actually advocating choosing wine by its label? Yes. Most wine today is well-made and sound, making it quite reasonable to hunt within a certain style/type of wine for a bottle that appeals visually as well. Now you’re cookin’. This idea calls for a little extra effort. People sometimes forget that wine stores in New York can’t legally sell food, so don’t expect to find pre-made gourmet baskets.. Take that as a challenge: with a separate trip to the grocery store, you can surround a choice bottle of wine with favorite cheese, crackers, etc. Maybe better yet, plan a whole meal around a wine (heaven knows she cooked enough meals for you, right?). Bill “Tish” Tisherman, a longtime Bedford resident and former editor of Wine Enthusiast and Beverage Media, develops wine tastings and events via his website, wineforall.com. Suburban Wines & Spirits in Yorktown Heights is the sponsor of this column. Turn an everyday pleasure into a special gift A quiet but significant trend in wine has been heightened emphasis on environmentally friendly vineyard practices. Wines made using organic grapes represent a large chunk of the market. However, U.S. regulations limit the use of the term “organic,” plus many practicing-organic wineries do not put any indication on their bottles. Get the scoop on these delicious “green” wines by reading shelf talkers in-store, and noting this symbol on websites: This garnet red wine has an inviting nose of baked red cherries, cranberries, dried orange peel, warm exotic spices, and tilled earth. The palate starts off soft with baked red berries and citrus touches, then smoked meat and coffee notes pop through the minerality. Followed by bright acidity and finegrained tannins, leaving lingering notes of cranberry sauce on the finish. When considering loved ones and acquaintances while making shopping lists, tangible gifts, such as clothing or items for the home, may be the first things that come to mind. However, experiential gifts also merit consideration. Experiential gifts are those that focus on experiences rather than items. These can include anything from a horseback riding adventure to a spa day to concert tickets to getting behind the wheel of a race car. Experiential gifts can be tailored to people’s interests. A 2014 study by researchers at San Francisco State University showed people tend to realize greater well-being from life experiences and consider them to be a better way to spend their money. Overall satisfaction tends to be greater with gifted experiences than with material things. Furthermore, the Harris Group found that 72 percent of millennials actually want to spend more money on experiences rather than things. This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection. PAGE 26 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – APRIL 25, 2024 Mother’s Day is a time to express love and appreciation for mothers, sentiments that are often expressed with gifts. Flowers are a popular present to bestow on Mother’s Day, as they can brighten a room and bring a sweet aroma to any household. While any flowers may ultimately suffice on Mother’s Day, gift givers may want to select flowers for Mom that convey specific messages. The language of flowers has been recognized for centuries. Though perhaps not as heralded as it once was, flower symbolism persists to this day. Here’s a look at some of the meanings behind certain types of flowers to help guide Mother’s Day gifting. • Amaryllis: These plants start as bulbs and are naturally spring-blooming flowers. The name comes from the Greek word “amarysso,” which means “to sparkle,” and they symbolize pride. • Aster: These daisy-like flowers are delicate-looking perennials. Asters make great gifts because they symbolize love and daintiness. • Begonia: There are more than 2,000 types of begonias, and the flower symbolizes deep thoughts. Begonias were made famous by French horticulturist Michel Bégon, who thought the blooms looked like beautiful girls. • Bleeding heart: These flowers are red and pink blossoms that look like the perfect heart shape with a teardrop at the bottom. They’re beautiful and symbolic of love and affection. • Buttercup: These are associated with youthfulness and cheerfulness and can call to mind childhood days spent picking buttercups and holding them under chins to reveal that you like butter. The flower is known for its beauty and innocent charm. • Camellia (white): White camellias stand for purity and innocence, but they also symbolize admiration and respect. Camellias make beautiful additions to any bouquet. • Daisy: Daisies are happy-looking flowers, and according to Norse mythology they represent motherhood and children. • Delphinium: Delphiniums come in pink, white and blue varieties and embody youth and renewal. They’re a good pick if you want to convey a continued or renewed affection for a person. • Tulip: Tulips with an orange hue are thought to represent understanding and appreciation. They can express appreciation for Mom or another special person. Yellow tulips symbolize happiness, while pink tulips are symbolic of love. Red blooms should be reserved for sweethearts. Various flowers symbolize feelings people want to express to their mothers, grandmothers and other special women on Mother’s Day. This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection. APRIL 25, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 33 Putnam Service Dogs At the heart of Mahopac lies Bella Cucina, a culinary haven curated by Josephine Matra, fondly known as Jojo, a passionate woman-owned business entrepreneur. Raised in the rich tapestry of Little Italy, Jojo’s upbringing was steeped in the traditions of family, love, and a deep passion for food. Drawing from her heritage, she envisioned Bella Cucina as more than a specialty food boutique; it’s a tribute to the vibrant flavors and warm hospitality of Italy. From imported cheeses and cured meats to freshly baked pastries and artisanal breads, every offering at Bella Cucina reflects Jojo’s commitment to quality and authenticity. As Mother’s Day approaches, Bella Cucina prepares to dazzle patrons with delectable surprises, embodying Jojo’s belief in sharing joy through food and community. With each visit, customers not only savor the flavors of Italy but also become part of Bella Cucina’s extended family, embraced by a tradition that celebrates the simple joys of life. Josephine Matra’s Bella Cucina Putnam Service Dogs, led by its founder, Nancy Teague, stands as the epitome of compassion and dedication in the realm of service dog training. Nancy’s journey to founding Putnam Service Dogs was sparked by witnessing the profound transformation that occurs when a service dog is matched with its recipient, forging a bond that uplifts the person. By training carefully selected service dogs, Putnam Service Dogs uplifts two challenged lives—a rescue dog and a person with a disability. Their dogs are trained for an average of two years and hundreds of hours before they are placed as service dogs. The demand for their service dogs is high, with a waitlist spanning 2-4 years, a testament to their efficacy. The support of volunteers and donors sustains their mission, enabling them to continue making a direct and significant impact on the lives of those living very challenging lives. Their commitment to their mission, encapsulated in the phrase “And they lived happily ever after...,” underscores the life-changing impact their service dogs bring. The organization’s service dogs and follow-up training are free to their recipients. Visit putnamservicedogs.org to volunteer or donate to support their cause. What brings you the biggest joy in this service you have started? We see many tears of joy when applicants realize their long wait for a service dog is over. After we’ve papermatched applicants to a graduating dog, we introduce the dog to 2-3 potential matches. The dog shows very clearly who they want to assist. Those Ah ha moments bring more tears. What are some of the upcoming events on the calendar for Putnam Service Dogs? We host three fundraisers a year. Our 5th Annual Funminster is May 4, 2024, at Patterson Recreation Center—a chance for people to show off their friendly pet dog and compete for prizes in 10 fun categories. It is truly a celebration of dogs. What is your advice to other women looking to make a difference through entrepreneurship? Be prepared to show a lot of grit to sustain the organization during its initial lean, trying years. Over 50% of all new businesses are gone by five years, and 98% by 10. Being an entrepreneur means you can hang in there. Putnam Service Dogs 917-449-5359 putnamservicedogs.org Bella Cucina 730 US 6 Mahopac 845-809-8555 bellacucinamahopac.com

PAGE 34 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – APRIL 25, 2024 We Carry A Complete Line of BioGuard Pool Treatments BY SOPHIA CASELNOVA CONTRIBUTING WRITER Yorktown’s third annual Fam Jam is this weekend and its organizers have huge fundraising goals. This year’s event will be on Saturday, April 27, from noon to 8 p.m. on Commerce Street and in front of Railroad Park. Organizers say this year’s goal is to raise $30,000, double what was raised in each of the past two years, to fill the voids in the community: food pantries and other organizations. There will be live music, food trucks, inflatables for kids, and a basketball challenge between Yorktown Police officers, Yorktown Fire Department members, and local youth athletes. “If you are looking to enjoy the change of the season with your families and neighbors, come down to Fam Jam,” said Brian Duffy, an organizer of the event. Organizers said in addition to the donations to locals this year, they will be creating scholarships for graduating seniors from both Yorktown and Lakeland High Schools. The $15,000 raised at last year’s Fam Jam event was dispersed to local community members and organizations last month. Last year’s event ran for two days and raised funds through local business sponsorships and donations from the community. The funds were divided amongst Support Connection, Alliance for Safe Kids, St. Mary’s Food Pantry, Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Yorktown Police Benevolent Association, Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department, Boy Scout Troop 173, United for the Troops, The Arcara Family, Anne Sgroi, Mohegan Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Yorktown basketball, Yorktown wrestling, and Friends of Parks and Recreation. “Rain-or-shine, there’s no excuse to miss this event,” said Jon Farrell, another organizer. “We are calling out all of our community members to enjoy craft beer, food options for every craving, and all those looking to kick off the best summer yet.” People can donate even if they don’t attend the event by visiting yorktownfamjam.com. Yorktown’s Fam Jam returns on April 27 As spring blossoms, the call for backyard sanctuaries grows louder among suburban homeowners, leading many to seek the expertise of professional pool companies.
