that re ects the limited number of adults with autism spectrum dis-
order (ASD) who are successfully integrated into our communities.
We can, and must, change the outcome of this story. Lives depend
on it.
With approximately 85 percent of autistic youths who exit high
school being unprepared for either college or for employment, it’s
clear that our schools are failing to prepare students with ASD for
successful adult lives. If students are to gain the skills they need to
live independently, we need to examine traditional education, tak-
ing into account the poor transition outcomes. Let’s re-think school
programming so that we can enable all students to achieve their
goals and become contributing members of their communities.
is article is a call to action for families and educators to advo-
cate for high school programs that will adequately prepare young
adults with autism for productive adult lives. We need to do a better
job if we are to create a bright path of opportunity for people with
autism spectrum disorder.
Autism is a spectrum disorder, a complex condition with a contin-
uum of functioning levels. Individuals who are diagnosed as autistic
may exhibit great variability in ability and behavior. e unique com-
munication, learning and behavior characteristics associated with au-
tism distinguish it from other neurodevelopmental conditions, such
as intellectual disability. A universal characteristic of autism is impair-
ment in social interaction. Interestingly, another widespread feature
of this disorder is an extraordinarily high unemployment rate. e
dismal employment statistics are unfortunate because people with
ASD often have outstanding strengths and abilities that would make
them highly valued assets in the workplace.
Educators are in a position to improve the employment rate for
persons with autism. A major responsibility of secondary schools is
to prepare students to realize their potential and become contribut-
ing members of their communities. High schools should be held
accountable for students’ outcomes. Adolescence is a di cult time
for young people with an ASD and their families. At this critical

For a young athlete grow-

what would you tell them
about the experience of being
part of the soccer program and
why should they go out for the
team?
My experience being a part of
the soccer program at John Jay
has been amazing so far. I am so
lucky to be a part of a team that
cares so much about the game
and each other. John Jay soccer is
a family. We go through every-

we lose together and we grow to-

High school soccer gave me the
opportunity to meet people in all

the most incredible friends.
During my sophomore year, I
chose to join the girls develop-

that I had to give up high school
soccer. I can honestly say that it
was the hardest year of soccer in
my life. When I returned to high
school soccer my junior year, it
was so refreshing to play along-
side my closest friends where we
could laugh, play and compete
together again. John Jay soc-
cer has been such a unique and
life changing experience that I
wouldn’t trade for the world.
