Concert in Katona

If one thing is for sure, it is that major storm warnings do not stop
Katonah from rocking out.

Trillium Acoustic, a local three-person band, had families and
friends on chairs and blankets at Katonah Memorial Park on urs-
day, July 21.

e free concert was sponsored by the Katonah Memorial Park
Association in partnership with the town of Bedford’s Recreation and
Parks Department.

“We’re thrilled that live music is back, and this is my third time
playing at the Katonah Concert,” said Rick Melen, guitarist and col-
umnist for the Katonah-Lewisboro Times.“We love to play, and Tril-
lium would be happy to perform at your party, your bar mitzvah, your
opening, your closing, your wedding, your divorce, and even when you
re-marry the same guy against everybody’s advice.”

From 7 p.m. to a little past 8:30 p.m., the band kept the crowd
growing throughout the show.

“We were concerned about whether there would be anyone here
because of the storm, but Katonah can rock,” said Collen Casale, a
member of the band.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT GYNECOLOGIC CANCERS?

commits to Rice

Jose Vasquez, a rising senior at the Harvey
School, has given his verbal commitment to
attend Rice University and play baseball for

the NCAA Division I Owls following his
high school graduation in June 2023.
A junior transfer to Harvey from

Norwalk’s Brien McMahon High School,
Vasquez had a terri c rst season for the Cava-
liers in 2022, earning Housatonic Valley Ath-
letic League (HVAL) All-League honors and
being named the team’s Rookie of the Year. He

was a major contributor to Harvey’s winning
its second consecutive HVAL crown. As the
team’s leado hitter, the speedy Vasquez had
a phenomenal on-base percentage of .554
and a robust batting average of .455. He stole
27 bases and scored 25 runs.
A left-handed-hitting, right-handed-
throwing out elder, Vasquez is a product of the
Nighthawks Baseball-6th Tool Foundation, a youth
travel and developmental baseball program founded
and owned by former major leaguer Luis Lopez, the
head coach of Harvey’s varsity baseball team.
“I give all credit to my parents but especially to Coach
Lopez for putting me in front of the right eyes at the right
time,”Vasquez said.
Based on Twitter videos of himself hitting that he sent to
Rice baseball’s head coach, Jose Cruz Jr., another former ma-
jor leaguer, along with the strong recommendations of Coach
Lopez, Vasquez was invited this summer to a Rice prospect
camp on the university’s Houston campus. It clearly helped
Vasquez having two former MLB players in his corner.
“ at connection between Coach Lopez and Coach
Cruz really helped because he believed in what Coach
Lopez had to say about me,”Vasquez said.
He went 3-for-3 in the showcase game and stole
three bases. e Rice head coach saw enough of
Vasquez to o er him a scholarship to play for the
Owls.
While Vasquez gives a good deal of credit to
Coach Lopez for helping to develop his baseball
skills since he was 12 years old, he acknowledges
that he has bene ted from having had a very
strong all-around support system.
“All my coaches and trainers have played a
major role in preparing me for this position,”
Vasquez said. He said it was his longtime
goal to play Division 1 baseball, and he is
happy to commit to Rice. “To be coached
by Jose Cruz Jr. is a privilege, knowing
his experience in baseball, but what also
hooked me to this program was the oppor-
tunity to compete at such a high level in

college baseball.”
Coach Lopez is delighted with the

prospect of Vasquez playing D-I base-
ball after his career concludes at Harvey.
“I’m so excited for Jose and his family,”

Lopez said. “I’ve known him since he
was 12 years old, and all he’s done is to
continue to play hard and trust the

process.”
As far as his academic endeav-

ors are concerned, Vasquez is con-
sidering majoring in sports man-
agement.
