NEWSPAPERS PUBLISHED WEEKLY BY HALSTON MEDIA, LLC MAIN OFFICE 118 N. Bedford Road, Suite 100 Mount Kisco, NY 10549 ©2023 Halston Media, LLC BY VIM WILKINSON EDITOR Katonah is a name that will spark snapshots of a quaint, picturesque town. It comes with the title of an affluent community meticulously balanced with charm, history, and cultural wealth. One of three hamlets in the town of Bedford, Katonah is a dreamy hamlet with an impressive resume. This welcoming destination, about 40 miles from Manhattan, is the pride of its residents, businesses, and organizations. A strong and tight-knit community calls this village home and is dedicated to preserving the history and beauty of the cherished village. THE WALKABLE KATONAH AVENUE A walk down the popular Katonah Avenue is a pleasing treat in any season. It holds its own, with landmark businesses from eateries to eclectic and elegant boutiques lined up neatly in this charming village. Victorian homes, dotted with homes with colonial-style features, decorate the heart of Katonah with mesmerizing treelined streets that create a short, pleasant walk to the shops, restaurants, and Metro North station. Fall in love with Katonah PHOTOS:VIM WILKINSON When we stepped into Phat Olive during the peak of Covid in July 2020, it was a risky move, but truly, the community here is what fueled our fire. The town itself has this wonderful blend of old-school charm and rich history, all wrapped up in a modern vibe that just draws you in. Plus, it’s a perfect little walking town, filled with tons of great shops and spots to grab a bite. Best part about being a business owner in Katonah Without a doubt, it’s the incredible support of our local community. Whether it’s the absence of big-brand name stores, the vibrant Chamber of Commerce orchestrating fantastic events, or the countless opportunities for businesses to thrive, Katonah is a town that champions success for all. But it’s the people who truly make it special—from our fellow business owners who feel more like collaborators than competitors to our incredible customers who feel like old friends, everyone is always ready to support local businesses and keep the community spirit alive. MAY 9, 2024 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE KATONAH-LEWISBORO TIMES – PAGE 3 Katonah is wonderful because it is walkable, provides us with extraordinary access to nature and the outdoors, features friendly mom-andpop shops and eateries, and many residents are engaged and welcoming.  Add to that mix, wonderful schools, a focus on sustainability, and some of the best non-profit organizations around, Katonah is a great place to live and to raise a family. We love walking down to Katonah Ave. from our house to stroll through the hamlet and pop in to stores and eateries. When the kids were younger we did the historic walking tour showcasing all the buildings that were moved here. We love to walk Reservoir Road and visit the Cross River Dam (we even got our kids to go with us for sunrise there one morning). Our family loves the Katonah Fire parade which is impressive with all the pomp and circumstance and shiny trucks but also causes one big party along the route where we visit with friends and meet new neighbors. Of course, Halloween is so much fun, again not only on its face with all the creative efforts that go into decorating but also the fantastic community spirit. In Katonah and the other Bedford hamlets we have great parks, playgrounds, pools, libraries, cultural institutions, historic resources, nature preserves, and community events – all great for families! Ellen Calves Town of Bedford Supervisor Katonah Resident Why is Katonah a great place to live? It’s a little bit boring, there’s not a lot to do; it’s given me time to spend with my friends and cultivate relationships. Your best memories growing up in your town. Getting permits and COs for home improvements where they are required is vital if you don’t want problems somewhere down the line. That is why every homeowner should always be aware of local regulations before making any significant changes to their home—and why it is essential to hire licensed contractors with good reputations who won’t try to cut corners and work without obtaining proper permits. If you’ve had work done or bought a place where work was done without permits, I can help you go through the process of legalization and obtaining a CO for the work. PAGE 4 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE KATONAH-LEWISBORO TIMES – MAY 9, 2024 When I moved to Katonah 8 years ago I was amazed at how warm and welcoming everyone was. In my neighborhood, I’m surrounded by individuals and families of all ages, backgrounds, interests and talents, which is so refreshing. There is a sense of community in Katonah that you don’t necessarily find in other towns. I’m also always impressed by how generous people are in helping those in the community who are less fortunate. I love that it’s so easy to shop local. For my first holiday season in Katonah I made a conscious effort to do all of my shopping locally. I have my go-to spots for all occasions and I’m never disappointed. Many business owners are now personal friends. My family especially enjoys the Art Walk and of course there is nothing like a Katonah Halloween!! My older daughter and son-in-law were married during COVID in May 2020. They had a small ceremony and family celebration in my backyard. Wild Fig had just opened and Nichole delivered the most exquisite flowers to my home. My dress came from Ruby Sue and The Whitlock had just started curbside pick-up. We had a fabulous spread, including our favorite Tater Tots. The best part was the photographer walked through town with my daughter and son-inlaw and took photos of all of our favorite spots. When my younger daughter was married last fall, Katonah was once again an important part of the planning. Flowers from Wild Fig Floral and wedding rings from Bijou were among the highlights. I love that this town has played such an important role in so many special occasions. Judi’s daughter and son-in-law at Blue Dolphin PHOTO: SARMA OZOLS Katonah offers an ideal setting for business ownership, boasting charming, picturesque surroundings and a welcoming community. The best part about being a business owner in Katonah is the sense of belonging to a tight-knit community. Making connections with customers and fellow business owners is rewarding, and the local support fosters growth and success. We are raising our three children in North Salem; our eldest daughter is a freshman at Cornell University, while our two boys attend North Salem Schools. We are also dog lovers and proud owners of two furry companions named Benji and Kona.  Judi McAnaw Financial Advisor, Edward Jones Katonah Resident Sammie and George Li Owners of Tengda Asian Bistro in Katonah

A network of rolling hills, lakes, preserves, and wide-open meadows of horse farms and country estates create the breathtaking landscapes of Lewisboro. The largest park in Westchester County, the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation is right in the backyard of this community. A total of seven lakes, including Lake Waccabuc and Lake Oscaleta, decorate the gorgeous terrain of Lewisboro. A goldmine for outdoor enthusiasts, Lewisboro offers great hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, camping, horseback riding adventures, and more. My parents moved here because of the schools. There’s always a lot of things to do and places to explore, like walking at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, and shopping and getting pizza in Katonah. I love the Katonah Library. I volunteered there in the summers before and after my freshman year. I enjoyed talking to the patrons. AH-LEWISBORO TIMES – MAY 9, 2024 PAGE 7 While some of the nation’s best riders and horses vie for top honors in multiple arenas, the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows offer plenty of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. Every day is special during the competition, especially during the Family Fun Weekends presented by Halston Media! The horse shows will offer pony rides on Saturday, May 18, and face painting and Grand Prix rider autograph sessions on each Saturday and Sunday. Plus, there will be an ice cream party with free ice cream each Saturday! Old Salem will also host one of their Charity Partners each Saturday for an adorable dog adoption, with the SPCA of Westchester visiting on May 11 and A New Chance Animal Rescue visiting on May 18. Founded in 1883, the SPCA of Westchester is one of the oldest humane societies in the U.S. Still located on the same property obtained by founder Mary Dusenberry, the SPCA is a no-kill animal welfare organization dedicated to saving homeless, abused and abandoned animals and to protecting animals from cruelty and neglect. Since their founding in 2012, A New Chance Animal Rescue has saved and adopted out over 1,000 dogs, providing food and general care until they can be placed in loving, permanent homes. Currently operating in nine states, the Rescue operates on a foster home model instead of boarding or sheltering their animals in a facility. These foster homes provide each dog with constant love and the experience of normal daily life, better preparing them for successful adoption. Other great activities include an ice cream party each Saturday, with free ice cream sponsored by Pegasus Therapeutic Riding on May 11 and by the Wolf Conservation Center on May 18. PAGE 10 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE KATONAH-LEWISBORO TIMES – MAY 9, 2024 by Old Salem Farm, on Sunday, May 19. In September 1975, the first Pegasus therapeutic riding sessions began at Ox Ridge Hunt Club in Darien, CT. Today, Pegasus is a PATH International Premier Accredited Center with three chapters throughout Putnam and Fairfield counties, including a 20-acre permanent facility in Brewster, NY. Their PATH-certified instructors, physical therapists, occupational therapists and licensed educators provide various equineassisted activities to people with special needs and individuals at risk, including disadvantaged youth, trauma survivors and adults with developmental disabilities. The Wolf Conservation Center envisions a world where wolves thrive. Located in South Salem, their mission is to advance the survival of wolves by inspiring a global community through education, advocacy, research and recovery. They have worked for two decades to protect and preserve wolves in North America through their programs, including participation in federal recovery and release programs for two critically endangered species. There will also be special events hosted by The EQUUS Foundation. The EQUUS Foundation aims to safeguard the comfort and dignity of America’s horses throughout their lives, allowing them to empower, teach and heal with as many people as possible. Established in 2022, the Foundation provides financial support to select equine charities to operate at the highest standards of horse care. Located near or inside the Old Salem Farm lobby, The Rider’s Closet will also be a daily staple throughout both weeks, which provides new and gently used riding apparel to riding programs, clubs, charities and individuals in need. The Animal Embassy will also return on Sunday, May 19, for another of its fanfavorite educational experiences. Dedicated to fostering appreciation and respect for the natural world and incredible diversity of life on Earth, the Embassy specializes in providing online, interactive and entertaining educational experiences. Founded by Christopher Evers in 2002, the Embassy is home to over 100 species of rescued and adopted domestic and exotic animal life, offering them sanctuary on three beautiful acres right in Westchester County.
