Ashley Song PAGE 6 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 Congratulations, Class of 2023! Or, to quote Dora the Explorer, “We did it!” This is an incredible honor for me to be speaking here today, and I would like to thank everyone who has helped along the way. To the teachers, administrators, and staff of Yorktown, thank you for your dedication and support. To my friends, thank you for the memorable moments we shared. Finally, to Mom, Dad, and Eric, thank you so much for your endless love and support, for your hilarious stories, and for staying with me every step of the way. Now, I would like to commence this speech by introducing a famous quote from an esteemed individual — Shrek. To quote Shrek, “Ogres are like onions… Onions have layers. Ogres have layers.” High school is like an onion. Yes, it can be smelly. Yes, it can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Yes, it can make you cry. But even with these imperfections, high school, like an onion, has layers. Layers like success and failure, friendship and hardship, and victory and defeat. Layers like life lessons, hilarious moments, and timeless memories. Layers like the Swing Dance, pep rallies, the Winter Formal, homecoming, and Faculty Feud. So many layers to make up the ultimate high school experience. So many layers to teach us so much about the world. Don’t worry, this onion is not going to waste. My dad is going to cook it later. When we first entered high school as freshmen, we were excited, nervous, and scared. Too many conflicting emotions we experienced. Too many possibilities for the future to count. The high school onion remained unpeeled, and we did not know what lay within. One of the earliest layers of the high school onion I remember was the NameThat-Tunes in Mr. Salmore’s Earth Science class. I didn’t know Starburst was such an ideal motivator for competition. Another layer was the baptism motif we learned in Ms. Williams’s English class. To this day, we still cannot find anything about the baptism motif online. The theory of Ms. Williams inventing the baptism motif is still going strong. Another two layers of the high school onion were APUSH and AP Euro. I think we’re all going to miss Mr. Kennedy’s notorious Wall of Shame and watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail in Mr. Egan’s class. I’m personally going to miss writing rap songs for both APUSH and AP Euro. In short, there are so many layers of the high school onion. Building cardboard boats in AP Physics. “Physics is fake,” by the way, according to our class. Watching Breaking Bad in AP Lit and Pitch Perfect in AP Calculus BC and The Help in Senate. Doing the infamous baby project in AP Psychology. Long story short, I am not very good at taking care of a child. There are sports and clubs and so many other activities in the high school onion, too. Congratulations to the amazing ‘Fulfill your destiny. Peel that onion. Make Shrek proud.’ YORKTOWN HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN SEE SONGPAGE 21 Photo: Emrin Leclair PAID FOR BY LAWLER FOR CONGRESS; PAID FOR BY FRIENDS OF MATT SLATER, 334 UNDERHILL AVE., SUITE 4B, YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, NY 10598 www.lawlerforcongress.com Lawler4NY // www.SlaterforNY.com @SlaterforNY “ Congratulations to the Class of 2023 – you did it! PAGE 8 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 Good (early) morning. Contrary to the dismay of my friends, I appreciate the opportunity to speak here as your Valedictorian today. Before I start, though, I have to give a few thanks. I want to thank the administration for putting this all together, especially Mr. Cummings. I also want to thank all of my teachers who have supported me throughout my high school career. My friends deserve thanks for always making any day better. I also want to acknowledge my girlfriend for always being there for me and making senior year one of the best. And, of course, I have to thank my family for being so supportive and giving me the tools to succeed. I want to give a special shoutout to my grandpa, who came all the way from Argentina. Te agradezco tanto Abuelo. You’ve probably made a few decisions this year. I mean, some of the things people do you’d expect that they aren’t thinking about and deciding what they’re doing, but realistically id bet a few bucks that most of the class in front of me has made more than a few decisions this year. It turns out, based on a commonly cited statistic from Wikipedia, that we make, on average, 35,000 decisions per day. It ranges from common things, like what to wear in the morning or whether to watch a movie, to more important things, like what to do after graduating high school. There’s college, the army, work, trade school, selling feet pics, or maybe something else. Even not making a decision is a decision in itself. And, most of us, made that choice. We did. We did? Did we? I’ve recently been thinking about my decision to go to college. It makes obvious sense for me, Ilan Villard ‘Be a player in your life, not a spectator’ Photo: Rob Distasio LAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN SEE VILLARD PAGE 23 Congratulations Congratulations to all Yorktown/Lakeland graduates from Town Supervisor TOM DIANA HORNETS Yorktown High School CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE 2023 GRADUATES! Huge Selection! Always the LOWEST price...PERIOD! 128 East Main Street • Mount Kisco, NY 10549 • 914-666-6100 www.atlanticappliance.com Best Wishes to the Class of 2023 Thank you Mr. DeGennaro for the warm introduction, and thank you all for being here today. It means a lot to me to have the privilege to stand up here and to address all the students, teachers, administrators, and parents that have inspired me, mentored me, and molded me into who I am today. And I mean that, sincerely. So many of you have impacted me in ways that you’ll never know: whether you’re one of my closest friends who was with me every step of the way, or someone who shared a personal story in class that changed my perspective on things, or someone who made me laugh and brightened my day, or a teacher who taught me not only what it means to be a good student, but what it means to be a good person — thank you. If I try to remember who I was a year ago, it feels like I was a completely different person. After all, I hadn’t yet experienced the wonderful surprise of confidently walking into a physics quiz, and solemnly walking out realizing that perhaps studying the day before wasn’t the best strategy. Two years ago, I hadn’t yet had the pleasure of pulling all-nighters for Mr. Kennedy’s beloved class on AP Time Management (also known as U.S. History). I hadn’t yet experienced Mr. Laber’s unbridled passion for statistics — which, he’ll have you know, is much more than a math class. If I hadn’t been taught by these exact teachers, if I hadn’t been surrounded by the exact same set of students, if I hadn’t been friends with the exact same set of friends, if I didn’t have the best family one could ever ask for, who have been the bedrock of my childhood years, I wouldn’t be who I am, and I know the same holds true for all of my classmates. We’ve shaped each other into who we are. It’s often too easy to forget this, and to spend too much time dwelling on our regrets or mistakes — “I should have spent less time on this and more time on that,” — but it’s incredibly important that we accept and embrace who we are, and an integral part of that is cherishing the past that has molded us into who we are — including all of our successes and failures, and more importantly, including all of the special people that have been a part of our lives. Only then will we be ready to dive headfirst into our futures with optimism and confidence. And we’ll all do this in different ways. After we graduate, we’ll all go on to lead vastly different lives, each saturated with unique experiences. But I’m confident that each of us will find our own purpose and our own path to positively impacting the world and those around us — whether it’s by developing cutting-edge technology, or creating beautiful new art, whether it be literature, or music, or painting, or by entering the medical field, or by being an architect, or by being a good neighbor and thinking about others before thinking about ourselves. And although we all have had unique lives and will have unique futures, there’s one important thread that ties us all together, and that is having been raised in Daniel Sheinin ‘It’s incredibly important that we accept and embrace who we are’ YORKTOWN HIGH SCHOOL SALUTATORIAN SEE SHEININ PAGE 21 Photo: Emrin Leclair

PAGE 10 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 Ladies and gentlemen, faculty and staff, parents, and most importantly, Lakeland’s graduating class, it’s with great honor that I stand before you today. On behalf of everyone present here, I extend a warm welcome to each and every one of you. Everyone who’s here played a key role in our high school journey, and so I want to thank each and every one of you for your support over the past 4+ years. First and foremost, I would like to thank our teachers, administrators, and staff members who have played a key role in our high school experience. You guys had one of the toughest jobs of guiding us in a turbulent and ever-changing world, but your guidance and support have made us who we are today. We are grateful for the lessons you have taught us not only inside the classroom, but through the relationships that you have made with each and every one of us. We all have fond memories of walking into class and visiting you, many of you have seen us rant, yell, even cry, and your support has made you not only great teachers, but also great mentors and role models. Without you guys, our experience would not nearly have been the same. To our parents and guardians, thank you for your love, encouragement, and sacrifices. You have seen us grow since we were young, and from the very beginning, you have guided us, nurturing our dreams and passions. Whether it was taking us to practices or even just feeding us and making sure we didn’t go to sleep too late, you have always been the backbone of everything we have done. You have supported us and never stopped rooting for us, even when we made mistakes, and we stand here as proof to your support and love. Class of 2023, we’ve been through a lot together. From the first steps we took into Lakeland as freshmen to the walk we made to the field today, we have grown not only academically, but socially and personally. We went through thick and thin, survived the brunt of the pandemic, but through it all, we have persevered and Garv Agarwal ‘We have persevered and emerged as stronger individuals’ Photo: Rob Distasio LAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL SALUTATORIAN SEE AGARWAL PAGE 23 96 Triangle Center, Yorktown Heights, NY 914-352-6238 • Open 7 Days–Lunch & Dinner Order Online: www.pow-burger.com Student POWER LUNCH Pow! JUNE 29, 2023 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – PAGE 17 As I thought about the comments I wanted to share with you, the Class of 2023, many ideas came to mind. We have gone through a lot together and through it all, you have demonstrated your resilience time and time again. But do not worry, I am not going to talk to you about the attendance policy, social media or the importance of getting to class on time, or the need to do your work and be respectful to the adults in the building. You have heard those speeches and that is not what today is about. Today is about you and recognizing this important accomplishment. You have all worked hard to earn this opportunity. You have survived those late-night study sessions, the countless assignments, and the mind-boggling equations and not to mention those surprise quizzes that create anxiety and that kept you on your toes. This morning, we are gathered here to celebrate your accomplishments and bid farewell to your high school years. As you embark on this exciting journey beyond our green and gold halls, it is important to remember that life is like a multiple-choice question. Sometimes, the answer you least expect turns out to be the right one. So, when life throws you a curveball, and trust me... it will, think of it as an opportunity to swing for the fences and hit a home run. And if you strike out, well, at least you’ll get a standing ovation for effort! Don’t lose contact with the friendships that you’ve made here over the last four years. The friends who’ve stuck with you through thick and thin, the ones who laughed with you until all hours of the morning, and even those who know things about you that no one else does... Hold on to them, don’t let distance take them away. For your teachers, these brave souls.... (I mean dedicated educators) well, they have worked tirelessly to help you survive adolescence. They endured your groans, your excuses, and your attempts to pass off a movie as the same thing as reading the book. So, if by chance you see them on the street one day, give them a heartfelt thank you, a handshake, maybe a hug or perhaps even a coffee. Trust me, they’ll appreciate it more than you can imagine. In all seriousness, as you step into the real world, remember that success is not just about the grades you achieved or the medals you earned. It’s about finding your passion, pursuing it with unwavering determination, and never forgetting to enjoy the journey along the way. Don’t just follow your dreams, chase them at full speed. And lastly, remember to laugh. As I mentioned, life will throw those curveballs, but a good sense of humor will get you through each and every obstacle. The Class of 2023 is an exceptional group of individuals, bursting with talent and limitless potential. As you move on from Lakeland, may your journey be filled with laughter, success, and an endless supply of Wi-Fi. Thank you for letting all of us be a part of your journey. Congratulations! and by Yorktown. Paraphrasing billionaire Warren Buffet, we’ve won the birth lottery. In Yorktown, even if none of our scratchcards have gotten lucky enough to win us the Powerball or the Mega Millions lotto, we’ve all already won a privilege far more meaningful than the lottery, and that is having been raised in a town that has provided and continues to provide us with a remarkable amount of opportunity, guidance, and support. It’s easy to take for granted the generosity of all of the people that have donated their time to strengthening Yorktown’s tightknit community, whether it be through coaching my in-house soccer team for years — shoutout to Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds for that — or through working for the Yorktown Police Department, or through participating in the PTA. We’re so lucky to have grown up here, and it’s our collective responsibility to share this opportunity and support that Yorktown has given us with those less fortunate than ourselves. Although we’re graduating and moving on from Yorktown High School, and many of us are going off to college in other states, I am confident that we will all continue to carry the torch and to embody the principles and values that Yorktown has ingrained in us, starting at Mohansic or Brookside and continuing throughout our time at Crompond, MESMS, and the one-and-only Yorktown High School. I am confident that we will all do our parts in contributing to building a more loving, sustainable, and creative future as we move forward with our lives and enter the scary yet exciting stage of adulthood. I’ll forever remember all the memories we formed as a united class, as a family, and I can’t wait to learn about all the incredible things that you incredible people will accomplish in the future. Thank you. JUNE 29, 2023 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – PAGE 21 accomplishments of Yorktown’s athletes, who always defeat the odds and persist even when faced with obstacles. For me, senior night was one of the most memorable moments during this year’s volleyball season, in which we defeated Somers and became Co-League Champions. And congratulations to the clubs which have contributed greatly to the community and accomplished monumental feats. For me, I’m so proud of our Science Olympiad team. We placed first at the regional tournament, the first time in Yorktown’s history. As we progress through our high school years, we gain new experiences, and thus, we discover new layers of the high school onion, peeling them one by one. “Now, let’s talk about the future.” I’m pretty sure all of you, if not, most of you, have heard this at least once in your lives. The future is too unknown. The future has too many possibilities. I have one piece of advice. Think of the future as an onion. Yes, the future, like a high school, like an ogre, is an onion. And currently, the future onion remains unpeeled, and we do not know what lies within. But as we proceed to wherever we go after high school, we slowly peel the future onion to discover new layers. And remember, it is the present that shapes the future. So, my piece of advice is to do something you’re going to be proud of. It can be as complex as starting a large passion project, or as simple as saying, “I love you,” to your loved ones. It doesn’t matter if you accomplish it. It doesn’t matter if you fail it. So long as you’ve given it a try, you have every right to be proud of yourself. So long as you’ve given it a try, you are going to peel the future onion. Finally, I would like to offer the wise words of Master Oogway, “You are the master of your destiny: No one and nothing can come in between you and your destiny except you. Take destiny by the horns and have fun.” So, go on now. Fulfill your destiny. Peel that onion. Make Shrek proud. Well, enough with the onion analogies. Again, congratulations, Class of 2023! I wish you all the best! Thank you. and it is the right choice - for me. There are lots of options out there, everyone picked different things, and this was my “choice”. But I also realized that I never actively told myself “Go to college.” It was a predetermined destiny, and in this case, fortunately, the right one. But that means that I didn’t make the choice to go to college. It certainly seemed like did, since I applied to all these schools, wrote wayyyy too many essays, and told all these college admissions officers about that time in first grade I peed my pants. But I never participated in the decision-making process. Iwas only a spectator, influenced by my grades, my parents, and the school around me. I never actually sat down, picked my own brain, and decided that college, rather than any other pathway, was the way to go. That was only done retrospectively, when I realized that I wanted to become truly active in my own choices. Yet, I wonder how many of the students in front of me feel the same way I did. How many students in front of me realized that the decision influencing the rest of their lives was made by outside forces? Now, I’m not gonna stand here and say that everyone should have gone to trade school, or gone straight to work, or anything like that. But, it’s important to reflect on the choice we made this year. Remember that random Wikipedia statistic? 35,000 decisions per day? Well, it’s actually a well-researched idea, and it makes pretty obvious sense. It’s clear we make decisions every moment of our lives. And we can’t just look on as these choices are made, especially the important ones. For example, a decision for so many of us that will come again in four years is what to do after graduating. It might seem like the predetermined path for us all is either graduate school or getting a job. But what if you want to start a company? What if you suddenly decide the military is the way to go? You can only do what you really want if you sit down, take the time to pick your brain, and then actively decide what you want, not what is the “right,” good path, that outside forces have decided is the way you should walk, but what will make you the most fulfilled, the happiest. Maybe, reflecting on your decision this year, that’s already happened. Or maybe not. Now, this is the part of the speech where I’m supposed to insert a quote. Tough luck, because all the quotes about being a spectator address the world around us. What about the world inside of us? We can be spectators to our own decisions that influence our lives. But my parting advice to this class is to be a player. Be a player in your life, not a spectator. Thank you, and congratulations to everyone. Catch you on the flip side, Lakeland. JUNE 29, 2023 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO YORKTOWN NEWS – PAGE 23 emerged as stronger individuals. We have excelled not only in the classroom, but in sports, music, art, and service. What we have done extends far beyond Lakeland, as we have impacted our community and left a lasting legacy. As we look forward to a new chapter of our lives, we should remember the lessons we have learned here and take them with us. Whether you’ve gotten back up after losing a game, or tried to save your grade after a rough test, remember that failure is not the end, but rather a stepping stone to success and growth. We will face new challenges and encounter unfamiliar territory. The world looked very different four years ago, and it will look very different four years from now. But we should tackle these challenges with the same determination and perseverance that have brought us to this moment. As we start our own journeys, whether in college, the military, trade school, or beyond, I would encourage you to stay true to yourselves. Chase your passions, follow your dreams, and do what you love. Remember the friendships and connections we have formed here and carry them as you leave this building. High school is often turbulent, but I’m glad to say we ended up as better people because of It. In conclusion, as we bid farewell to Lakeland, we leave with memories that will last a lifetime, and a sense of purpose that will guide us towards infinite possibilities. Congratulations, Class of 2023, for your hard work that makes you proud to stand here today. Thank you.
