Jordan Fiderer brings the backhand. PHOTOS: RICH MONETTI On April 20, John Jay hosted Horace
Greeley for the Wolves’ third match of the
season. Defeating Yorktown on April 5
and losing a close match to Byram Hills on
Monday, April 18, hope of going over .500
was a long shot.

“ is is a very good team,”said Coach Paul
Crivelli, “one of the toughest in the section.”

e results did not stray from the data, and
the Quakers swept the Wolves.

In the featured singles match,Jordan Fiderer
fell 6-2, 6-0 to Marco Arboleda. “He’s just re-
ally good at hitting winners,”Fiderer said.

Still, Fiderer felt he hung in there pretty well
and sees the team having more success going
forward, an outlook that has caught the at-
tention of the coach. “Always helping out the
younger players and exhibiting a great work
ethic,”said Crivelli,“ at’s his biggest strength
– leadership.”

Matt Marchini is one of those impression-
able underclassmen, and the chance to play
varsity in eighth grade has not been lost on
him.“It’s a great honor,”he said.

e middle schooler doesn’t even mind that
as the most junior player,he sometimes is made
to pick up more practice balls than his elders.A
small price to pay,Marchini also saw the upside
in a 6-2, 6-0 defeat.

“He ( Jason Wei) was a really tough oppo-
nent, but I made him make mistakes and ral-
lied pretty well,”said Marchini.

A game plan that last year’s eighth-grader
knows well.

“He is the most consistent player out there
and can wear any player out,” said Crivelli of
Dylan Scott’s relentless groundstrokes.

On the other hand, Scott has set a goal with
Crivelli to economize his game.

“I’ve been working on my serve to get it
deeper,because it tends to get attacked,and I’m
working on keeping the groundstrokes longer
in the court,” said Scott, who lost 6-0, 6-0. e
freshman aims to shorten the points and get
some free ones.

On the doubles side, Marty Brandwein and
Will Fenton also had a tough go in a 6-1, 6-0
defeat.“ ey hit a lot of balls where we weren’t,”
said Fenton.“ at set us up to be separated and
left a lot of the court open.”

Even so, Fenton felt he had some good
play on the forehand, the backhand, and on
serve. e communication also went well, and
Brandwein agreed. “We try to give as much
constructive criticism as we can,” said the dou-
bles player.

Not bad, since the duo doesn’t usually team-
up. “Marty didn’t have his usual partner in
crime. So, I’m proud of him for being a good
leader and helping a young player grind it out,”
Crivelli said.

e one-sided a air did not linger, though.
e boys swept Brewster on ursday to move
to 2-2. Scott, Ian Rhodes, Marchini, and Fi-
derer all went 6-0, 6-0 in singles and Brand-
wein and Fenton, Andrew Glass and Ben
Wysmuller, and Jackson Nagy and Guillaume
Pestie did the same on the doubles side.
