A versatile and hardy plant, the rudbeckia is
heat and drought tolerant, which makes it low

brown/black centers. It’s a self-seeding member of
the daisy family and a rewarding perennial. It blooms

Timing and organized planting is so important in gardening. When we moved into our new house,
the rst year was pretty much a time to observe and see what was coming out when and where. We were
amazed by how well the previous owners planned and planted each plant around the house so there was
always something blooming during the owering seasons.

by the creeping phlox that blanket over the front entrance with their beautiful petite purple owers. Soft

rhododendrons decorate the back garden accompanied by irises and daylilies by the pond. As the spring
transforms into summer, the exciting summer spectacular begins.

Known as the almost perfect plant, the sedum or
stonecrop is a care-free, hardy plant that can tolerate
the harsh heat of the summer. It is the perfect plant
in the shade or in the sun and is a fabulous addition
to rock gardens. It starts as clumps of succulent-like
light green leaves in the spring and continues growing
through the summer. Large clumps of owers that

Florida Concepts Pools
are built to last

BY JESSICA JAFET PHOTOS COURTESY OF FLORIDA CONCEPTS POOLS

Home pools are more popular than ever.
For over 30 years, Mahopac’s Florida Concepts Pools, Inc, a
company of inground pool experts, has been transforming back-
yards while keeping their commitment to using quality products
that withstand years of use. With each job, they create a private
oasis for a family to enjoy and a place for memories to be made.
Owner Ken Lauro said that there are a few fundamental things
that make his company stand out among pool builders.
“We are maintenance-free and we come with a lifetime war-
ranty; you put this pool in once and you are done—there is noth-
ing else to do,” Lauro said.
As an exclusive Grand Dealer of Latham fiberglass Viking
pools (which are said to be 17 times stronger than concrete and 34
percent thicker than other fiberglass pools), he explained, Florida
Concepts Pools, Inc. has access to many of the necessary materials
and products that are scarce at the moment.
“We are still delivering pools now and we are one, if not the
only, company that is still doing so, because of the demand on
material and raw materials,” he said.
Lauro and his partner (and son), Ken Jr., and the company’s
team, offer many options to pool owners, including 65 designs,
inlaid mosaics and tiles, fiber optic lighting, waterfalls, spouts and
cascades, among other items.
Depending on a customer’s location and the specific permit
regulations, in most cases the pool will be in the ground within a
week from delivery. Jobs are still being scheduled for this August
and September, which might allow local residents to plan their
“staycations” before the summer season is over.
Florida Concepts Pools, Inc. works in Westchester, Putnam,
Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Ulster counties, as well as in
southern Connecticut. In Lauro’s experience, when a family makes
its backyard pool dreams come true, the value of their property is
increased, as well as its desirability and appeal, which is beneficial
to both buyers and sellers. His outlook for the surging pool trend
is very positive so he advises that anyone sitting on the fence or
putting off the idea until next year to reach out to his company
now.
“If you want a pool—even for next year—you should get on
the phone now,” he said. “In the past two years, our business has
grown by 100 percent.”

A CHARMING BARN RED A home in Somers
PHOTOS: JENNIFER STROMBERG
About 40 years ago, the owners of this
home fell in love with its barn-red color.
Constantly evolving color trends over the
years did not change their love for this ma-
jestic but charming pigment. Nestled among
the tall trees that surround it, this property

ts perfectly in the serene landscape.

AN ELEGANT HUE

is home by Somers’ Boniello Development looks elegant with the
owners’ choice of Benjamin Moore’s Temptation. A tinge of blue and
violet mixed in the grey gives the house a purple tone in certain light.

Clean white columns and trim provide contrast to the darker hue,
yet merge nicely for the intended image.

e owners went through a few di erent
shades from greens and blues and landed on
this unique mix meant to bring out the
elegance of this center-hall colonial.

A SOOTHING CREAM

A popular color for many, this beige or

as some call it, “a soft cream,” has its own

charm representing a safe but familiar tone.

seems to work for this traditional-style

home for a fresh look.

A RUSTIC CHARM

e owners of this rich-colored home likened it to an Adirondack cottage, given its
rustic look and how it’s nestled in among a lot of granite outcroppings.

Glamorous yet modest, it boasts a little bit of drama but still comes
across as friendly and warm.

e house is believed to have been built in the late
1800s—perhaps a hunting structure of some
kind—then expanded further decades later.

e home features a vibrant splash of color
among peaceful natural surroundings.
