A note from your Supervisor

It has been my pleasure to serve the people of Somers as Town Supervisor. I am proud to celebrate
our community and the residents who make our town such a wonderful place to live. For over 40 years
I have witnessed the great spirit of volunteerism and community that resonates throughout our Somers,
and I am delighted to see that continue today. As we celebrate Somers and our community, let us also
remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and those who continue to ensure our freedoms.

- Supervisor Rick Morrisey

THE ELEPHANT HOTEL
e Elephant Hotel is nationally signi cant for its as-

sociation with American circus history. It was built by
Hachaliah Bailey, who became renowned after he acquired
the second elephant brought to America (around 1805).
Bailey toured with the elephant that became known as Old
Bet. He built the classic three-story brick edi ce, a rare ex-
ample of Federal style domestic architecture, between 1820
and 1825. On April 5, 2005, the Elephant Hotel was desig-
nated a National Historic Landmark, recognizing it as the
oldest existing building of signi cance in the development
of the American Circus. Hachaliah Bailey (1775-1845) is
buried in the nearby Ivandell Cemetery. He died on Sept. 2,
1845, at age 70, after having been kicked by a horse.

THE WRIGHT REIS HOMESTEAD
In 1908, Caroline Wright married Walter

Reis. Walter traveled for business while Caro-
line was running their farm. Caroline was also
an active member of several Somers organiza-
tions such as the school board and the Somers
Lantern Association. She was an accomplished
artist, and many of her works are on display at
the Wright-Reis Homestead. Caroline Wright-
Reis donated her home and 82 acres of land to
the town of Somers. She
asked that the property
and the land be used for
recreational and educa-
tional purposes. Today,
that land is the beloved
Reis Park. Without her
generous donations, we
would not have Reis
Park, the Somers Li-
brary and the Wright-
Reis Homestead.

man, the Bailey name has been associated with Somers
for 200 years. Hachaliah Bailey’s cousin, Horace Bailey,
gave his son, William Bailey, the land across from the El-
ephant Hotel. In 1870, William Sr. constructed a beauti-
ful family homestead. When William Sr. died in 1889, he
left a wife, a son, William Jr., and two daughters.

William Jr. continued to live in the house until 1957,
when he passed away. e house was sold but went into
disrepair. By 1987, this 120-year-old home had become a
cobweb-covered kind of “haunted house.” But one can only
imagine the parties and joy this house knew, with the show-
man and circus people who likely visited the Baileys.  Town
fathers and others saw the need to preserve the vacant Bailey
House, which was restored and turned into o ce space.
