PAGE 6 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 Class of 2023: It is not how you start, it’s how you finish. If we rewind the tape back to the fall of your freshman year, you were entering the exciting world of Mahopac High School. The world was full of promise! And then came the spring of your freshman year. That same world that was “full of promise” was now completely upside down. But here we are in the spring of 2023. Approximately 90 percent of you are going to a two- or four-year college or university; two percent are going to a career educational school, five percent are entering the workforce, one percent are taking a gap year, two percent are enlisting in the armed forces. Twenty-three will play collegiate sports. Twenty-five have graduated with the new Seal of Civic Readiness offered by NYSED. Fiftyfive members of this class completed more than 240 volunteer hours—each! It is not how you start it is how you finish. Believe in yourself. Know others believe in you. Love your family. Stand for something bigger than yourself. Embrace your accomplishments. Not only have you fulfilled the New York State Education Department requirements, you have done much more than that. You have lived our core values, you are a model of what the Mahopac Central School District wants to see in a graduate... find happiness in that. I have truly enjoyed our four years together. I will miss you! Excepted from Dr. Lawrence’s 2023 commencement speech. A message from the principal ‘Believe in yourself. Know others believe in you.’ Photo: Tabitha Pearson Marshall DR. PAGE 8 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 The Board of Education of the Mahopac Central School District wishes you the greatest success in all your future endeavors. Congratulations to the Class of 2023! You did it! To the Class of 2023: There are all kinds of aphorisms about graduation. It’s both an ending and a beginning. It’s the first day of the rest of your life. It’s a rite of passage. All that stuff is trite, but it’s also true—and not just for students. Graduation is a big deal for parents, too. I know because I sat on Mahopac High School’s bunbusting bleachers three times. Are they any more comfortable? Write in. I’m really curious. Anyway, while everyone else is rightly focused on you students, I want to give a little shoutout to the parents and guardians who got you through it. I don’t think I can articulate the sense of pride and wonder that comes with watching your kid finish high school. There’s excitement about what’s next, and maybe if I’m being honest, a little bit of worry, too. Whether they’re going to college, the armed services, or their first real jobs, they’re stepping into an arena in which you’re, at best, an assistant coach (and over time, just a supportive fan). Speaking for myself, letting go was hard, but exciting. Looking back, the feeling was different for each kid. With the oldest (2008), we had no concept of how much we’d miss an opinionated teenager when she actually headed off to college. I’ll bet other parents will back me up about that first walk back from the dorm, leaving your child in the hands of complete strangers. Suddenly, you see the kindergartner again and wonder how any of this could be allowed to happen. You go home, you call to check in, and eventually, you get used to it. Second kid (2013): You’re prepared. Or so you think. You miss them just as much. All the stuff you figured out when your first child left the house? It’s mostly useless because every person is different— even if they groan at the same jokes and ignore the same advice. Final kid (2014): Here’s where it gets interesting. (Parents of only children, it must be a flood of mixed emotions.) Yeah, you’re gonna miss them. Yeah, you’ll have a whole new set of individual experiences and challenges to navigate. But there’s a difference. You also realize when they graduate, you’ve also graduated! Mom and dad’s limo service? Out of business. Homework patrol? Decommissioned. Having to make bacon to lure the kid out of bed before noon? Not until Thanksgiving break. From there, who knows? Different states, even different countries, may await them. If you’re lucky, they work their way back to you as they grow older. As for any helpful suggestions you try to give them: They may reject them now, but don’t toss them away. They’ll be interested in five to six years. Which brings me back to the Class of 2023: Having seen my own kids graduate Mahopac High School, I know how hard you’ve all worked. And seeing my daughters in adulthood, I can also say that the education they received at MHS, which you have now completed, is a good starting point for wherever you decide life’s path should take you. You’ve probably gotten a lot of advice, and you’re sure to get more. Some of it you may even ask for! Here’s one hint from an old guy— the advice you don’t ask for isn’t always wrong. And on that note, here’s some unsolicited advice from a dad of three grads: Write a note to your folks (and/or mentors, even if they’re siblings) and tell them how much their support played a role in getting you through high school. Even if you don’t really mean it, they’ll like reading it. And someday, you’ll realize it’s true. And wherever your life journey goes next, enjoy the ride! —Emile Menasché Editor A message from Mahopac News

PAGE 16 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 Thank you, Dr. Lawrence. Good evening and thank you to all the friends, families, teachers, administrators, and most importantly the students sitting before me to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2023. My name is Jack Edwards, and it is beyond an honor to speak on behalf of the graduating class as senior class president. First, however, I would like to express gratitude to those who have made my educational career possible. Thank you to Dr. Lawrence, Superintendent Tona, and the faculty who have fostered an academically stimulating environment in which so many of us have succeeded. Thank you to my family. To my grandparents who have provided endless opportunities. To my dad who never fails to turn a bad day into a great one. be. And most importantly, to the woman to whom this speech is dedicated... my mother, who was and will always be my biggest motivator, supporter, and champion. Now that that whole spiel is over, I can finally congratulate the Class of 2023 on their unique accomplishments. Each and every one of us has overcome some sort of adversity, obstacle, or hardship. We as a class faced one of the most academically challenging circumstances a graduating year has endured. COVID-19 interrupted two of our most formative years. Yet standing before you all today, I can say with confidence that we did it. It doesn’t matter how you adjusted to virtual schooling, the number of APs you took, or how high your GPA was; we’re here together as 319 students who accomplished something remarkable. So, I invite you all to join me in a round of applause for the graduating class of 2023. As senior class president, I was asked to speak before you today on behalf of the experiences of the senior student body. However, as I was writing this speech last night [laughs] it became overwhelmingly apparent that I don’t know each of your individual experiences. Rather, each of our stories is our own and it would be ignorant for me to think that I could sum up our collective journey in a singular speech. As I know, beyond this final draft there is so much more to each and every one of you. So as this chapter comes to fruition, I would like to wish you all good luck in your future endeavors. I would however like to offer you a piece of advice before my speech comes to a close. In the wise words of my favorite philosopher, Mr. Worldwide: “Every day above ground is a great day, remember that.” So as 12 years went by in the blink of an eye, reminisce about all the memories that are still to be made. The text of the speech was submitted by the Mahopac Central School District and may vary from the spoken version. PAGE 18 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 Thank you Dr. Lawrence. And thank you to the students, teachers, parents, and staff who made these four years everything that they were. Thank you Superintendent Tona and Dr. Lawrence for all the work you do to make our school what it is. Thank you to all the teachers who have not only had an impact on my life, but each and every one of the graduates sitting before you. Thank you to my mom for always being my biggest supporter. Thank you to my dad for always pushing me to do my best, and showing me the importance of hard work. Thank you to my brother Ryan for always inspiring me and always setting such an amazing example for me. Thank you to my best friend Nola for spending countless hours studying with me and always dealing with all my crazy. And thank you to my dog best friend Holly, for growing up with me and keeping me company through hours of online COVID Google Meet classes. It is my honor to stand here before this incredible student body, which I have had the pleasure of growing up with, and everyone who has made an impact on the graduates who sit here today, looking back on 12 years of legacy we’ve all made together. A few weeks ago many of us received letters in the mail from our eighth-grade selves. I remember sitting in Mr. Leone’s class that day writing the letter, making a list of all the things I hoped to achieve in my coming years of high school. I told myself, and I quote, “Don’t be a failure… Work hard… Get good grades… Graduate in the top 10 percent…Get into a great college…Become a doctor.” But the most important thing that stuck out to me was the last thing I wrote to myself: “P.S. Don’t put too much stress on yourself…Have fun…Be a kid… Enjoy high school.” This last line stood out to me most because it is something I have always struggled with. I have always put an immense pressure on myself to be perfect. Pressure to get the perfect SAT score, to have a perfect GPA, to graduate top of my class, and to go to the perfect college. And while I don’t completely regret any of that because it is what has gotten me to where I am today, I also stand here today after achieving many of the things I had dreamed of and realize Megan Bloomer ‘This is the day we have been dreaming of.’ SALUTATORIAN PHOTO: TABITHA PEARSON MARSHALL SEE BLOOMER PAGE 19 Pizza and Pasta Pick up or FREE Deliverywith minimum $15 TUESDAY SPECIAL $2 OFF any large pie Exp. 7/30/23 LUNCH SPECIAL 2 slices cheese pizza plus can of soda $8.50 Mon-Thurs. 11:30-3:30pm Exp. 7/30/23 Congratulation and Best Wishes to the 2023 Class of Mahopac High School Why wait on long lines, when you can order on line! www.cacciatoripizzamahopac.com 941 So. JUNE 23, 2023 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – PAGE 19 BLOOMER FROM PAGE 18 that none of that is what truly matters. Yes, it is important to work hard and do your best but none of that matters if you’re not enjoying life along the way. While we have not had a PERFECT high school experience I feel that is something this group of graduates has always done well. We have always stuck together and found a way to laugh through each and every experience from being predominantly online our first two years of high school, to an outstandingly terrible college admissions year, to a smoggy kiwi day and Six Flags trip, we have found a way to have fun through it all. In the words of Dr. Lawrence, one can say we have been an extremely RESILIENT class. Going into senior year, everyone tells you how quickly it flies by. One minute you are getting your SAT scores back, the next you are completely overwhelmed by college applications, then within the blink of an eye you are opening up those college decision letters and figuring out where your journey will continue. Then within the next blink of an eye senior week, prom, and seaside is all over and here we are standing in our caps and gowns about to leave behind everything we have ever known and step into the next chapter of our lives. It is a whirlwind of emotion: excitement for what is yet to come, fear of the unknown, and grief for what we are leaving behind. But it is also one of the best times of our lives, the most carefree and childish we will ever be able to be again, a time of growth and finding yourself. For me personally, senior year was a year of change, of shifting priorities, and letting go of the pressure to be perfect. I have rekindled friendships and made many new friends. I have made more memories, like Halloween or St Patrick’s Day, and laughed more in the last few months than I have in all of my high school years past. And I can stand here and recite numerous facts about the mitochondria from AP Bio, or derivatives from AP Calc BC, but in the end, I feel I have learned some of the most important lessons from this group of people I have come to be close with this year, and the experiences I have had. I realize now that these moments are what matter. And you may remember these moments or you may not, but what you will remember is the people that you spent these moments with. And in 30 years when our kids are graduating and we pull out our senior yearbooks to show them what life was like when we were their age, these will be the moments that we remember and are wishing to rewind time and go back to. Looking out into this crowd of my peers, I still see the faces of the little girls and boys I sat with on our first bus ride to kindergarten—the faces of the little girls and boys I grew up playing teacher on the carpet of our first-grade classroom, and the faces of the little girls and boys singing songs at their fifthgrade graduation, so excited to move on to middle school. Standing here, I am in disbelief that we are no longer these kids, we are now adults. This is the day we have been dreaming of and working for, for 12 long years. The day we are about to say goodbye, to disembark on our own journeys, each taking a piece of our shared childhood with us and creating our own unique path. I can’t wait to see where each and every one of us end up, and I hope no matter where that is, we take advantage of every moment. We do things that scare us. We take chances. We make mistakes. We make memories. And we live. Thank you. The text of this speech was provided by Mahopac Central School District and may vary from the spoken version. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause, WE MADE IT! It feels like just yesterday we were all freshmen, unsure of what to expect in high school. And imagine, this was before we had any idea of what was in store for us - a pandemic (really?), a war in Europe (again?), the return of the mullet (why?). JUNE 29, 2023 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – PAGE 21 unprecedented. Our lives have coincided with the arrival of social media, the iPhone and AI programs earlier this year. We were the first generation that was filmed and streamed from our very first breaths. Every plastic participation trophy we received, every funny thing we’ve said, has been recorded for the world to see. And this has been great, right? We can go back and see how we’ve changed, see our younger selves preserved in these digital museums on our moms’ phones. We can watch our younger selves try to kick a soccer ball or smile toothlessly beneath a bad haircut, knowing that someday, it turns out alright. And that our childhoods were not lost to memory. But this also means we’ve been conditioned to live our lives on display for the world to see, to judge. Everything is fodder for selfies and stories, and those are about clout, influence, as much as they add to our memories. In this environment, it can be really hard to know what’s real and what’s fake. What is authentic, and what is a façade. So when we think about the posts and the likes, the mind games of Snapchat with the reads and unreads, the screenshots and the on-delivereds... We must ask ourselves, who is all this for? Each generation has its challenges. Our generation, in a time unlike any before, is going to have the responsibility to define who and what matters to us. Genuinely. Who we want to be, genuinely. Not who we want to seem to be. And I know a lot of people have been asking us seniors, “What do you want to study, What do you want to be?” And I could imagine myself writing books, going into medicine or food science, or perhaps education. But I’m not sure that’s the right question. The better question is, “Who do you want to be?” Our accomplishments, whether they happen through our grades, sports, instruments, or even our Snap scores, they’re all fleeting. But who we are; what we stand for, who we are close to in our lives--these are enduring. And thanks to the daily morning announcements, we have a sense of who we are. We are Mahopac. “We are resilient, compassionate, risk-taking problem solvers.” (Count four fingers: Nailed it!) Until now, we’ve all had a lot of shared experiences that helped define who we are. We’ve had the same teachers, played at the same parks, and ordered from the same pizza places. But going forward, we may never all be in the same place again. Isn’t this crazy? We’ve grown up together. We know stuff about each other. We know who sweat so hard in assassins that the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department had to get involved. We know how some towns get snow days, but here in Mahopac, we get raw sewage days! From here, our journeys of finding who we want to be will be different. Some of us have enlisted to serve our country in the military, and we thank you. Some of us are directly entering the workforce. Others are heading to college. Regardless of our different futures, for the rest of our lives, when people ask us, “Hey, where are you from? Where’d you go to high school?,” we’ll ALL say, “Mahopac, Mahopac High School.” For the rest of our lives, we will share this common sense of our hometown, and if I know one thing for sure, it’s that I’ll be rooting for you; wherever you go and whatever you do. Let’s root for who we are, not what we are. Let’s go ’Pac. Love you guys, thank you. The text of this speech was provided by Mahopac Central School District and may vary from the spoken version. PAGE 22 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – JUNE 29, 2023 Thank you, Dr. Lawrence, and good evening fellow classmates, parents, teachers, and friends. My name is Ava Van Nortwick, the student body president here at Mahopac High School. Before I begin, I would like to start with a few thank yous, first and foremost to everyone in attendance here today, and all the Mahopac Central School District staff that helped make this event happen. I’d also like to thank my parents and my sister, Maxine, for their unconditional love, support, and essay editing, as well as all of my family that traveled far and wide to see me graduate today. For them, “Hans Bubby, I’m your white knight.” And lastly, I’d like to thank Mrs. Stephens and my science research class, as well as my besties—WOOT—you know who you are because they’re all part of the reason why I’m up here today. Today is our final goodbye. Whether you grew up in this district or not, the last day of every year has felt very different than the one we just experienced. From running out to the buses with friends to pulling out of the senior parking lot, our ‘“final bell” was a lot different this year because instead of it just ending another day at 2:02, it ended our high school career and started the rest of our lives. When we walk out of graduation today, the person next to you may no longer be someone you used to ask for gum or laugh with while a teacher is talking or even someone who would just make you smile. They’ll be just them. You’ll be just you. And all of us will be walking into our futures, seemingly alone, in a whole new world. Let me tell you, it has been quite the ride being the president of this class for the last three years. From endless questions in the class Instagram DMs to hearing very opinionated discussions about things from spirit week to the bathrooms, you guys definitely know how to make your opinions heard all the way up to the end of the year. But before we actually say our final goodbye to each other, instead of me bestowing you the inspirational advice I found on TikTok, I want to share a couple of things we’ve learned together over the last few years. Something we quickly realized is that once we graduate, our entire world will change. If you haven’t noticed, our little town of Mahopac is not the world, and eventually, we have to leave here in some way, shape, or form. While we may have to physically leave, all of us will be tied together by the invisible string of our memories, for better or for worse. And while the world is not Mahopac, the world is most definitely ours. And when we part, each of us will begin to write the story that we were always meant to tell, whatever it may be. In preparing to leave MHS, it became clear that all the challenges we faced were all just noise. Over the past few years, it’s obvious that our class faced an unfair share of trials and tribulations, but what we couldn’t foresee is that those very moments prepared us for what happens after today. Yeah, you could say we are resilient, but we are truly so much more. Each of you is truly so much more. There will always be some type of noise in our lives whatever our future plans may be, but by graduating today, we are prepared to always face that noise. All 319 of us didn’t let whatever that noise in our lives was, define us, change us, or most importantly, hold us back because we are here today, sitting with our caps and gowns on. Lastly, being at the end of our high school careers, as cliche as it may sound to hear out loud, we are all completely and unequivocally special, right in this moment, and will be for the rest of our lives. Being in high school, it becomes second nature to compare ourselves to everyone and everything around us… from looks to personality to academics. But just like the sun and the moon, they both have their own role to play in our lives and shine in their own time. And, seniors, our time to shine is right now. Growing up, we’ve always had the year 2023 engraved in our minds. The years turned into months, months turned into days, and now those days turned into hours, minutes, and seconds when we will all get the chance to finally walk across this stage. You might not have loved MHS or even liked it, but graduating from here is now an integral part of who you are. Yes, when we graduate, they’ll be just them, and you’ll be just you, but we will always be the Class of 2023. Like the queen said herself, victory is right around the corner. Without further ado, congratulations to the Class of 2023. NOW, WHO’S READY TO GRADUATE?!!
