She earned the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness and was one of five students to be awarded the Corporate Scholarship from the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents. In addition to serving as secretary in the Mahopac Organization of Student Teamwork, Kailee was treasurer for the TriM Music Honor Society. Part of those hours were spent organizing a donation drive for the Putnam Humane Society through Mahopac’s student government (M.O.S.T.), supporting the high school PTO at clothing drives, and volunteering at Carmel Recreation and Parks. She also attended a National Youth Leadership Forum in medicine. A talented musician as well as academic, Kailee played the flute in Mahopac’s concert, symphonic, marching, and pit bands throughout her high school career. She is also a member of the Italian Club, the Italian National Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and the National English Honor Society. She also served as secretary in the student government organization MOST (Mahopac Organization of Student Teamwork) and treasurer for the TriM Music Honor Society. The six-time Signature Student award-winner has been on the high honor roll every quarter of her high school career and was recognized by the Westchester Coalition of Italian American Organizations (WCIAO) last fall. She attributes much of her success to her teachers, who inspired her and nurtured her intellectual curiosity. She aspires to be a veterinarian and will be continuing her studies at Binghamton University. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction and was awarded NYS Scholar Athlete for Varsity Soccer in 2022 and 2023. Monika showed strong leadership at MHS through her involvement in student government (M.O.ST.), as president of Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and as co-captain and treasurer of the math team. Outside of school, Monika spent time volunteering for the Putnam County Youth Court Program, as well as coaching youth soccer through the Mahopac Sports Association. She has valued the senior WISE program at MHS as it offered her the opportunity to intern at the Trevor Zoo in Millbrook, N.Y. “I really enjoyed the opportunities I had here at Mahopac,” Monika said earlier this school year. “My internship at the Trevor Zoo, where I had the chance to get hands-on with the animals, helped further my interest in zoology and animal research.” Monika will be studying biology at the University of Florida. PAGE 8 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – JULY 3, 2024 BY CHRISTINE TONA Good evening. Welcome to our Board of Education members, administrators, faculty and staff, proud parents and families and our amazing graduating seniors. Congratulations. We are all here to celebrate you as you graduate from high school. It is a time to look back on your accomplishments and celebrate how far you have come. However, I challenge you to look back and use the knowledge you now have to consider what you have learned over the past four years and think about what you could have done differently. Are you happy with who you are, with where you are going? You are moving forward, and you now have an opportunity. How would you like to answer this same question in the future? How will your story read four years from now? Ten years from now? Imagine yourself 10 years from now, in the year 2034, and you meet someone for the first time. They ask, “Who are you? Are you happy in all that you do?” How will you respond? Think about that response now and create a roadmap for yourself for the next 10 years. Here comes that stranger to ask, “Hello Mahopac High School graduate from the class of 2024,” ‘Imagine yourself 10 years from now’ PHOTO: TABITHA PEARSON MARSHALL SUPERINTENDENT’S ADRESS SEE SUPERINTENDENT PAGE 14 [email protected] CALL TODAY 845-621-2557 128 Route 52, Carmel Shari Zimmerman Allstate Agent Life insurance is LESS EXPENSIVE than you think … Congrats Class Of 2024 Call Us Today For A FREE ESTIMATE! JULY 3, 2024 – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO MAHOPAC NEWS – PAGE 15 principal I am reminded of your amazing journey and the tremendous growth that has shaped you into young adults who are prepared to take on the next chapter of your lives. I was fortunate to have met you in the fall of seventh grade when I began as your middle school Assistant Principal. You were only 11 or 12 years old at the time and trying to find your way. We shared many experiences typical of middle school like outdoor recess after lunch and team and spirit days. As you prepared to transition from middle school to MHS everything changed in March of your eighth-grade year. Virtual classes, no final exams or regents, no Washington trip, no eighth-grade dinner dance, and a moving-up ceremony in which I waved to you from the curb of Mahopac Middle School as you drove by in your parent’s car. This was not easy on you or your families. You were then asked to begin your high school experience by coming to school on a hybrid basis, blue and gold cohorts, and often attending classes virtually. You started your career at MHS at an extremely difficult time. Fast forward four years later and you are now seniors about to enjoy one of life’s milestones having overcome great adversity. I think about the first days and weeks as Principal of MHS in December as I walked the halls and reconnected with so many of you. Your transformation and growth have been astonishing. This was more and more evident after each passing day whether I was attending a concert, an athletic event, or just a conversation with one of you in the halls. Your growth was not only in academics, arts, or athletics but in equally important areas like self-advocacy and being true to your values and ideals. I could not be more proud of who you have become. This growth and success made it evident that you embodied the core values of what makes a successful MHS student: Compassion, problem-solving, resilience, and risktaking. Many of you have heard this from me throughout the year. Although each core value is important, I firmly believe that compassion and empathy are THE most important. When a group of individuals are compassionate it creates an environment that allows everyone to have the confidence and strength to problem solve, take risks, and be resilient when needed. Compassion isn’t just a nice sentiment, it can be a powerful force and have a direct impact on those around you and your entire community. It’s about lending a hand to those in need, offering a listening ear to a friend, or standing up for what is right, even when it’s difficult. As you prepare to begin the next chapter of your lives, whether it’s pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, serving our country, or exploring new horizons, I urge you to continue to uphold the MHS core values of compassion and empathy. Doing so will ensure that you will continue to be a force for positive change no matter where life takes you. Class of 2024, as you celebrate this great milestone please know that I have full confidence that you will leave a lasting impact on the world around you. Congratulations on your graduation and may your journey ahead be filled with success, fulfillment, and, of course, compassion. Congratulations!
