BY BRETT FREEMAN PUBLISHER The headline says it all, and because of this, our page size has been temporarily altered to t the specs of the available press line. But here’s the good news: Nobody was injured. e newspaper obviously arrived in your mailbox, albeit possibly a day late. Additionally, we’re not performing brain surgery and we’re not trying to solve world peace. Everyone will survive. And we expect that the changes are just for a few weeks. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN - TEMPORARILY - FOR ADVERTISERS AND READERS? When our printer placed us on one of their non-damaged press lines and told us that our original image area of 9.5 inches wide by 12.75 inches tall needed to change to 10 inches wide by 10 inches tall, we couldn’t easily alter everything on the y. Making a change of this magnitude would typically take weeks, if not months, of careful planning.  Here’s what we decided to do until we’re back up on our usual press. All our clients who bought ads that are shorter than 10 inches tall will retain the exact same size ad. is is why the quarter and half-page ads look so huge this week. Any client who bought an ad with a height larger than 10 inches will still dominate the page. But we can’t just lop o the top of an ad. e ad needs to be adjusted at the diagonal to avoid distorting any images. For full-page ads, at least for this week, it meant there was a little more white space on the left and right. We’ll try to get the full-page ads sized to t in future weeks. But most importantly, we never want to distort a client’s design. If we need to bump up the page count to t more news and other editorial items in future weeks, we will do so. We’re hoping that things will go back to normal in a few weeks, but in the meantime, we’ll continue to make additional adjustments to ensure all the elements look good on the revised dimensions. We take immense pride in our weekly product — including the look, feel and design of the paper. When I received that phone call from our printer on Sunday afternoon, I had a gut-punch reaction. But we are grateful that they were able to gure out a way to accommodate us. And like I said, thankfully nobody was injured and this is not life and death. But we did feel an obligation to explain the temporary changes to our clients and readers. State aid, the district’s other largest source of revenue, is to see a 21.9% increase from $21,158,867 in 2022-2023 to $25,800,000 in 2023-2024. SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS Currently, the Yorktown Central School District (YSCD) has SROs at Yorktown High School (YHS), Mildred E. Strang Middle School (MESMS), and one primarily at Crompond Elementary School that also supports Brookside Elementary and Mohansic Elementary. e new model in next year’s budget maintains the SRO presence at YHS, MESMS, and Crompond, while adding one to cover Brookside and one at Mohansic. e plan at the start of the presentation was originally to budget for the addition of one SRO to cover both Brookside and Mohansic. Following the presentation and discussion amongst board members, they decided to budget for the addition of two SROs. “Children will not learn in an environment where they don’t feel safe,” said Dr. Ron Hattar, Superintendent of YCSD. “ at is paramount here to keep in mind.” All SROs serving in the YCSD are o cers of the Yorktown Police Department. Hattar said that the frequency of violence in schools is always on his mind. “It’s hard to turn on the news at night and not see another violent incident happening in a school, and that’s what keeps me up at night,” said Hattar. Hattar explained that the SROs undergo intensive training to be able to work in a school building. ey are also part of district and school emergency response teams. “Our SROs are in classrooms delivering lessons on making good choices, responsible use of technology, they’re talking about bullying and cyber-bullying, and social media footprint, good decisions and bad decisions,” Hattar said. Hattar added that the SROs are also coaches and advise clubs. “Our Law Enforcement Club in our high school is our highest attended club,” said Hattar. “We o er 70 co-curricular activities, 60 sports, 130 opportunities, and of those 130 opportunities for students in the middle school and high school we have, the highest attended club is our Law Enforcement Club advised by O cer Doerr.” e SROs will cost $170,000 each. To be able to add the two SROs, costs had to be reallocated in the budget and $64,000 was added to the budget from the Fund Balance; the District’s savings account. e addition of the $64,000 does not impact the property tax levy. e reallocations came from Board of Ed adopts 2023-24 budget Spending plan includes adding new SROs YORKTOWN CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT SEE BOE PAGE 6

Westchester County continues to lead the way in developing best practices that help seniors age successfully in their homes and communities. Senior’s vital signs – speci - cally their pulse, weight, oxygen blood level and blood pressure – are measured using computers and other equipment. at data is then transmitted to telehealth nurses who review it remotely.  If the tests show cause for immediate concern, the nurse will contact the seniors, their caregivers or primary care physicians directly. I don’t mean just any painter, but an immortal — with a mural-size ego and volcanic reputation to match? I haven’t either. But I feel like I just did, thanks to e Schoolhouse eater in Croton Falls, where I spent 90 enthralling minutes in the company of such an artist, and his assistant. e play is “Red.” e artist is famously mercurial Mark Rothko (Patrick Lawlor). e ( ctional) assistant is Ken (David Beck). e total experience is a gift to local theater-goers. Key to the appeal of this six-time Tonydecorated work by the estimable John Logan — whose diverse writing range includes a couple of Bond movies — is that your enjoyment is not dependent on being an art a cionado. Not at all. You don’t even need to ever have heard of Mark Rothko. On purely its own terms, “Red” — directed with masterly brushstrokes by Schoolhouse Artistic Director Owen ompson — is thrilling, mind-expanding theater that plumbs the human condition with vibrant dramaturgy and acting and stagecraft. THE HUMAN PALETTE You’ll leave e Schoolhouse eater with an entertaining education in the colorful and complex palette that is the human condition. Rothko left his indelible mark as a galvanizing force in abstract expressionism, his style characterized by rectangular swaths of black and red and self-made shades in between. To the unimpressed, his paintings earn the dismissive pejorative of “fuzzy rectangles.” To art world cognoscenti, notably those ush with cash, a Rothko is so prized they will part with tens of millions of their dollars to own one. e play is set in the late 1950s, when we catch Rothko at work on a career-de ning commission from iconic architect Philip Johnson to create massive murals for a highpowered, elegant new Manhattan restaurant named Four Seasons. In this portrait of the artist as a tortured soul of Shakespearean proportion, we learn Rothko, paradoxically, does not su er gladly Rothko collectors whose interest hangs on bragging rights for having his oils prominently hoisted above their mantelpieces as a badge of elitism. Rothko in fact nds such shallowness and showiness more a repudiation of his work than an honest appreciation and understanding of it. ROTHKOCO WORLD Into this — let’s call it Rothkoco — world steps earnest new assistant Ken, an aspiring artist whose job description seems to have included, “must tolerate being humiliated and patronized.” Ken is there to mix paint, apply primer, clean up, fetch Chinese take-out and generally prostrate himself humbly in all manner of groveling. High on the list of things Ken is not welcome to do, in Rothko’s words ... “By what right do you express an opinion of my work.” at is the kind of He sees ‘Red’ Award-winning play is colorful portrait of art giant Mark Rothko BRUCE APAR BRUCE THE BLOG SEE APAR PAGE 11

THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2023 OPINION YORKTOWN NEWS – PAGE 11 feral creature whom Ken, and by extension the audience, is dealing with. Rothko’s self-described goal is to ll the spiritual emptiness of his viewers with a myth of his own making. Being an artist, he says, is 90% thinking and 10% painting. He wants viewers of his pictures to bond with them in the rising heat of emotion, not merely admire them at a cool remove, which is how he feels about “representational” art such as da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Rothko was as much intellectual as artist, quizzing Ken on his familiarity with the likes of Freud, Sophocles and, especially, Nietzsche and his “ e Birth of Tragedy.” Keeping bankers’ hours of 9-5, Rothko thinks and paints to a continuous underscore of classical music spinning on a phonograph, paintbrush nestled in one hand, ever-present tumbler of Johnnie Walker Scotch cupped in the other, with cigarettes as a chaser. Ken, by contrast, is a jazz bu with a decided taste for pop art (Rothko’s bete noire) and scant taste for liquid spirits. If Ken has illusions of being mentored in the secrets of how to summon the muse of timeless art, Rothko’s less wont to tutor than to torture Ken, with withering remarks like, “I am here to make you think, not make pretty pictures.” WATCHING PAINT DRY Author John Logan also is here to make us think through his protean talent for stage managing big ideas with a writer’s sleight of hand that locks us in to every moment, big and small. In “Red,” that includes Logan’s ability to engage the audience in watching paint dry — literally. We are privy to the actors priming a large canvas, with real paint, in real time, as if we had a stake in the result. at kind of verisimilitude extends to the entire production, with a transporting set design by Rob Dutiel, depicting in detail Rothko’s Bowery neighborhood atelier. Schoolhouse Producing Director Bram Lewis notes that “John Logan represents the zenith of contemporary writers of stage and lm.” I couldn’t agree more with Bram’s assessment, and not only because Logan won the 2010 Best Play Tony Award for “Red” (one of its six Tonys) and has been nominated three times for a Best Screenplay Oscar (including Gladiator). Logan delivers an extraordinary amount of information, and yet manages to make it not only palatable but lucid, engrossing, inherently dramatic. It’s not about the mechanics of his dialogue, but about the depths of his curiosity and fertility of his imagination, leavened by a golden ear for crackling exchanges. CHIAROSCURO EXPRESSIVENESS Logan takes us on a rollercoaster ride with Rothko and Ken, whose fraught relationship is beautifully rendered by actors Lawlor and Beck. Freighted with the heavy load of Rothko’s blowtorch of a psyche, which melts those in his purview whom he deems unworthy, Lawlor’s energy never ags, with the artist’s constant search for life’s meaning imprinted in chiaroscuro on his expressive, pained face. Beck is a revelation (and a delight) in the nimble navigation of his character’s far-reaching arc, which courses from him wincing, whenever Rothko bellows with bloviating bravado, to Ken eventually growing a pair by unabashedly challenging the bullying mentor whose personal interest in Ken is zero. To Rothko, the young man might as well be a can of paint. Rothko is too preoccupied worrying about “the black swallowing the red” (that is, desperation overwhelming aspiration) to concern himself with anybody’s life but his own. If you’re looking for terri c, a ordable theater, you’ll want to drink in this delicious “Red.” Production Stage Manager is Je Meyers. Lighting by Dennis Parichy. Nick fought the valiant fight, but sadly passed away on March 21st, 2014, three weeks after his 23rd birthday. Nick was a graduate of Seton School, Kennedy Catholic High School, and Boston College, having completed his degree in Finance while battling cancer. He was known among his friends for his lust for life, capitalizing on every moment, always with his beautiful smile and ever-present sense of humor. About a month before Nick died, he asked that we continue to help people. He said, “That is what I always tried to do.” To honor Nick’s wish, we ask that you help us by donating a pint of blood. Blood donations afforded Nick the opportunity to spend some additional, precious time with his family and friends. There is no greater gift. We know she was an elderly African American woman in her mid-60s and a resident of Donalsonville, a small town in Georgia. In June 1944, she was food shopping in the general store. She considered purchasing a can of cooking oil. Hunter examined the can, but changed her mind and returned it to the shelf.  e grocer, a white man around 20 years old, took o ense at her actions because of her race, followed her out of the store and beat her to death. Although the grocer was initially arrested, no charges were brought, and his name was never released. Elbert Williams was a young African American resident of Brownsville, Tenn. He led a quiet life with his wife (no children). At 31, he was a founding member of the local chapter of the NAACP. His dream was to someday be allowed to vote, something that was far from guaranteed at that time for an African American living in the south. Sadly, Williams was lynched before ever being able to cast his rst vote. And it was made known that a similar fate would befall any other African American who dared to share his dangerous ambition. Was his killer or killers prosecuted? Not at the time. Williams’ death certi cate read: “found oating in river; inquest held: cause of death unknown: neither an accident nor a homicide.” is entry was made on his death certi cate even though everyone knew that he had been lynched and then cast into the waters of the Hatchie River by a mob led by the local sheri . Williams’ spouse, Anne, tried valiantly, but she could not nd a lawyer willing or courageous enough to demand a federal investigation. Even if there had been an inquiry, it’s doubtful it would have gone anywhere.  African American Army Private Booker T. Spicely served our country during World War II. When he returned home in 1944, after his tour of duty with his Army buddies, he mistakenly believed that he could ride a bus in Durham, NC, just like his white comrades. He told the bus driver that, after serving his country in war, he felt he deserved the same treatment as the white soldiers on the bus. e bus driver stopped the bus, took Spicely outside and shot him dead.  Forty-six-year-old African American Je Davis considered himself lucky to have been hired by white bosses in Louisiana in 1938, when jobs were hard to come by. Unfortunately, one of the bosses claimed Davis owed him $3. e Louisiana Supreme Court described what happened next, “the negro, Je Davis, was tied with his hands around a tree and all of them beat him. Luckily, someone rescued the unconscious Davis and saved his life.  On Feb. 17, 1950, African American teenager Willie Baxter Carlisle, having no money, made the mistake of trying to sneak into a teenage dance with two young friends. The next day, all three were apprehended. Twenty-eightyear-old city police officer James Ray “Bo” Clark, who had been on the force for only two months, decided to show his fellow officers his mettle. As the other teens looked on, Clark beat Carlisle mercilessly. The next day, Carlisle succumbed to his wounds. But this time, the murderer was charged and arrested. In a boisterous trial with a courtroom filled with angry whites, the jury issued a quick verdict of not guilty. Simultaneously, the courtroom erupted in howls and shouts of approval like you would expect at a sporting event.  Ivey Gutter, 54 years of age, was a valued employee of the Illinois Central Railroad for most of his adult life. Living in McComb, Miss., he was concerned that changes were coming too slowly in the Jim Crow south, but as a member of the local NAACP chapter, he harbored hope that some day he could cast his first ballot. Lucky for him, he left his membership card at home. Gutter was kidnapped by three masked men in 1964 who spared his life because they didn’t find his NAACP membership card on him. Nonetheless, they brutally whipped Gutter and threatened him with death should he continue in his efforts to vote.  In October 1946, George Floyd (not the one you’re thinking of ) was a turpentine worker in St. Augustine, Fla. He had a problem with alcohol. It was not unusual for him to be inebriated on a Saturday night. On one such occasion, he was thrown into a cell in the St. Augustine jail. As Floyd lay there, semiconscious, the jailer decided to continue to beat him, in front of several witnesses, as he lay motionless on the jail room floor. Aside from a cursory coroner’s inquest, no evidence on any government level, be it local, state or federal, was preserved that could possibly bring Floyd’s killer to justice. Although his death was not technically a lynching, it was part of a pattern of brutal oppression that dominated the south for decades.  You might wonder why I have called attention to these names, people I had never heard of until I started my research. I believe that instead of covering up our history or whitewashing it, we need to learn more about it. When I was growing up, I was never taught about the extensive violence of the post bellum south. The deeper I got in my research, the more I realized that the brutality and violence of the Jim Crow era was perpetrated by store owners, bus drivers, streetcar conductors, hoodlums, railway brakemen, and so on. From the end of the Civil War until 1965, the violence that buttressed segregation took different forms throughout our country. But make no mistake about it, it was deeply embedded in culture, law, and politics.  The north wasn’t immune from the stings of racism either. While at Fordham University in 1971, I found a basement apartment in a predominantly white section of the Bronx. I would have preferred the upstairs apartment, but the landlord had already rented that unit to a quiet, single, middleaged African American nurse. I was shocked at the hatefilled vandalism and protests which followed her arrival, as the neighborhood made it clear that her presence was not acceptable.  Racism persists today. And it has always existed. We must continue to say these names aloud, to tell their stories, to teach them in schools, and to recount what happened to them. Only when we squarely and honestly confront our history, can we learn from it, and ensure that it is never repeated again.  MARTORANO FROM PAGE 12 You can’t spell Yorktown without Yonkers Several proposed mega-developments presently before Yorktown’s Planning Board are poised to spring up soon.  It won’t be too long before you can honestly say that you can’t spell Yorktown without Yonkers. Projects like Underhill Farms, Kear Street, Weyant, Roma Building, Commerce Street Hotel and now Lake Osceola will build a combined 550 to 600 units. This is only possible with the aid of the wrecking ball named “overlay redistricting.” This pursuit of profit in the name of progress will forever negatively impact Yorktown. Seems like Yorktown’s Planning Board has ignored other advisory boards’ warnings and community complaints and is literally doing administrative acrobatics to enable developers to fit their square plans to Yorktown’s round peg zoning/ building density/wetlands regulations. Was it necessary for developers to hire former politicians like former Supervisor Michael Grace and former State Sen. Terrence Murphy to represent their interest? Who ultimately will benefit the most? The town, its residents or the developer’s multimillion dollar bottom line?  -Stephen Brown Yorktown LETTER

Healthy Smiles Start Here! Film fans were shocked to learn recently of the health struggles of beloved action movie star and former Westchester County resident Bruce Willis. Willis’ health issues were made public in 2022, and since then the star has largely retreated from the public eye.  Willis was initially diagnosed with aphasia, a disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate. Aphasia affects speech, how people write and their comprehension of spoken and written language, according to the Mayo Clinic. For Willis, aphasia ultimately proved to be only one component of what was later diagnosed as frontotemporal dementia. The Cleveland Clinic says aphasia can be a byproduct of illness, like dementia or injury, or a complication of a stroke or traumatic brain injury. When blood fails to supply cells in the brain with oxygen, those cells die and can produce deficits. Aphasia also may result from conditions that disrupt how the brain works, and those conditions may be temporary, like migraine headaches. While aphasia predominantly affects adults, it can affect children, too. The National Aphasia Association says nearly 180,000 Americans develop aphasia each year. Families may feel that something is not right when a loved one has trouble finding words, reading or communicating effectively. There are different types of aphasia, and each kind can impact a different component of speech or understanding. Doctors may discover aphasia when they are treating patients for traumatic brain injuries or by looking at images of the brain. If a physician suspects a patient has aphasia, the doctor may recommend a consultation with a speech-language pathologist, who can perform comprehensive examinations and testing. Sometimes aphasia symptoms can start to resolve on their own without treatment. Others may need help regaining the ability to communicate through various methods, says Johns Hopkins Medicine. These can include: • speech-language therapy • nonverbal communication therapies, such as computers or pictures • group therapy for patients and family members • simplifying language by using short, simple sentences and repeating words or phrases as needed Aphasia affects communication but it might improve over time. For those who are left with some loss of language skills, therapy may help to address those deficits.  This article is from Metro Creative Connection. Aphasia and its side effects

JENNIFER DR MICHAEL FERRI Headaches may be a common nuisance, but that doesn’t mean they share common characteristics. For example, migraine su erers may attest that these headaches can be much harder to endure than others.   e health and wellness resource, Healthline, says a migraine is a neurological condition that typically causes painful headaches, which are accompanied by other symptoms, such as sensitivity to smell, touch, light and sound. Migraines also may produce numbness or tingling, visual auras and nausea/vomiting. e American Migraine Foundation advises that migraine attacks feature distinct phases. Recognition and understanding of these phases can help to manage headaches more e ectively. Some of the earliest signs of migraine include fatigue, blurred vision, auras and other prodrome symptoms unique to people’s migraine histories. ese conditions can occur anywhere from a few hours to a few days before a migraine attack. It is important to note that symptoms may not occur with every migraine, nor will early symptoms always result in migraines. Identifying potential migraine symptoms early may help a person reduce the severity of a migraine. Typically, the migraine headache stage can last for several hours or up to three days, says the AMF. People identify migraine pain as pulsating, throbbing, pounding, perforating and debilitating. Some have compared it to having an ice pick inserted into the head. e Mayo Clinic notes that these steps may help to reduce the severity of migraine symptoms. • Find a calm environment away from stressors and the bustle of everyday life. • Relax in a dark, quiet room as light and sound can exacerbate migraine pain. • Small amounts of ca eine can relieve migraine pain in the earliest stages and enhance the e ects of common OTC pain medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Sip small amounts of ca einated soda, tea or co ee. Don’t overdo it, as that can lead to ca eine withdrawal headaches. • Try to get steady, uninterrupted sleep each night. Poor sleep may trigger a migraine. Certain lifestyle habits may increase the risk for both cancer and heart disease, say the experts at Hackensack Meridian Health. In addition, some research has shown that heart disease, a history of heart attack or a diagnosis of heart failure leads to an increased risk for developing cancer. A 2019 study published in the European Journal of Heart Failure indicated “emerging evidence supports that cancer incidence is increased in patients with cardiovascular disease and heart failure.” Patients with heart failure commonly die from cancer as well. Circulating factors related to heart failure promote tumor growth, which could explain the link between heart disease and cancer. Another surprising bit of information is that cancer can occur in the heart, though such instances are very rare. According to the Mayo Clinic, cancer that begins in the heart is most often sarcoma, which originates in the soft tissues of the body. is article is from Metro Creative Connection. Did you know?

THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2023 YORKTOWN NEWS – PAGE 21 BY SOPHIA CASELNOVA STAFF WRITER e Shrub Oak Athletic Club resurrected its Lady Stingers softball program and kicked it o with an opening ceremony on Apr. 16. e ceremony took place on the eld behind the Lakeland Administrative Building before the 12U team’s game against Westchester Heat.  “ e opening-day ceremonies were put together to celebrate the girls who play softball,” said Rob Del Balzo, head coach of the 12U travel team and rec-teams. “Too often girls are overshadowed by boys’ sports, and SOAC is proud to recognize that girls rule!”   e rst pitch of the game was thrown out by Town Supervisor Tom Diana, and Councilman Sergio Esposito presented coaches Jimmy Salera and Chau Vo with certi cates appreciating their e orts in revitalizing the program.  All of the coaches in the program are volunteers. e program grew from 30 players last year to over 100 this year, and has 8U, 10U, and 12U teams. ere are also 12U and 14U travel teams.   e program consists of girls from Yorktown, Lakeland, Walter Panas, Putnam Valley, Somers, and White Plains.  In the fall of 2020, indoor sports and activities were still restricted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so there was a rise in girls trying softball for the rst time, according to Del Balzo. “ is is where the Lady Stingers were born,” said Del Balzo. Del Balzo told Yorktown News that after the spring season in 2021, “softball fever kicked in” and there were more girls than slots available on the roster in the town’s travel team.  “We were looking for a place for my daughter to play year-round,” said Del Balzo. “ is seemed to be the case in a number of towns locally, and that’s where Jimmy Salera and Chau Vo came to the rescue.” Salera is the commissioner and coordinator of eld time and coach assignments. PAGE 22 – YORKTOWN NEWS SPORTS THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2023 BY MIKE SABINI CONTRIBUTING WRITER Led by three touchdown passes from Deanna Lage, Lakeland improved to 7-1 with a 27-0 victory against visiting Scarsdale B on Saturday (4/22).  The team’s only loss, a 12-6 setback at sister school Walter Panas on Apr. 11, has seemed to motivate the Hornets.  “Obviously, we were not happy when we lost to Panas because we think this year, we are really able to compete with every team we play,” Lage said. “So, with today’s win putting us at 7-1, it is only helping us with gaining more confidence for our upcoming games.”  A great rapport with each other has led to the Hornets’ success so far.  “For us, we have a good core group of girls,” said Lakeland coach PJ Nyberg. “They are all pretty good friends. They have that connectability with each other and that helps a lot. It builds team morale. I do not have to do much teambuilding activities, they just already got it. They are all on the same page. They want to learn, they want to get better, and they want to win.”  Two of Lage’s touchdown passes were thrown to Caroline Leonard, with the first one an 11-yard pass with 20:28 remaining in the opening half.   Leonard is one of the three freshmen on the team, along with Samantha Del Ponte and Grace Ruffino.   “They are the nicest girls I have ever met,” Lage said of the freshmen. “They listen, they are very coachable, and they just blend with the team really well. All the new people and the veterans, we get along great.”  Lage then connected with Gabby Santini on the extra-point conversion that put the Hornets up 7-0.  Lakeland’s second drive was kept alive when they went for it on fourth and seven from their 33, with Lage hooking up with Laura Macdonald for a 22-yard pass competition.  “Going for it, it’s tough to punt, and keep positive-field position. We also noticed that when we were running those hand-offs, they were kind of biting on it, so we went with the fake pass, and it all worked out,” Nyberg said.  Lage finished the drive with an eightyard touchdown pass to Macdonald, with Lage running in the one-point conversion, giving Lakeland a 14-0 lead with 11:36 remaining in the opening half.   “She (McDonald) ran an in-route,” Lage said. “I feel like, through soccer, through flag, me and Laura have a connection, so I am able to find her on the field really easily. So, I had an opening, I saw her coming across the field, and I knew exactly where to pass it.”  Scarsdale attempted to get back in the game, but on a fourth and goal from the Lakeland 16, Hornet Ashley Butler made one of her team-high seven tackles to stop the drive.   “Ashley is a bit of a difference maker,” Nyberg said. “She can really step up at times, especially in times of need. She puts pressure on the quarterback, and it’s a huge advantage to have her.”  Haley Santucci (6 tackles), Grace Nugent (3 tackles), Santini (3 tackles), Leonard (3 tackles), Mia Lucia (2 tackles), and Del Ponte (1 tackle) also contributed to the Hornets’ defensive effort.  A 42-yard touchdown pass from Lage to Leonard toward the end of the first half and a 38-yard touchdown run by Del Ponte at the beginning of the second finished Lakeland’s scoring.   Lakeland also won 50-0 at Hudson River on Thursday (4/20), led by Nichole Ljuljic (4 TD passes, defensive interception), Lage (2 passing TDs, rushing TD, receiving TD), Del Ponte (98 rushing yards, receiving TD), Leonard (2 receiving TDs), Ruffino (rushing TD), Santini (receiving TD), Santucci (receiving TD), and Samantha Moscati (6 flag pulls).   Lakeland blanks Scarsdale 27-0   Lage leads LHS with three TD passes  PHOTOS: ROB DIANTONIO Caroline Leonard heads for the end zone for a touchdown. THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2023 SPORTS YORKTOWN NEWS – PAGE 23 BY MIKE SABINI CONTRIBUTING WRITER Lakeland/Panas went toe-to-toe with host John Jay-Cross River, but fell 7-6 with the Wolves scoring the game-winning goal with 1:47 remaining in the first overtime on Tuesday (4/18).    “Overall, we competed for the entire game,” said Lakeland/Panas coach Joe Macchi. “It took our offense a little while to get up to speed, but once they did, we started moving the ball and clicking. Defensively, we continued to play at a high level, as we have done for most of the season. At the end of the day, John Jay made one more play than we did, and that ended up being the difference.”  After trailing 3-0 early in the third quarter, goals by Kyle Gallagher and Riley Sand cut the Wolves’ lead to 3-2.  “Our coaches got us fired up, and as a team, we knew we were so much better than the score showed,” said Lakeland/Panas’ Will Moore. “Once we scored the first, we just kept building momentum. We are a tight group and it was great to be in it, but a win would obviously feel much better.”  Moore tied the game at 3-3 with just 1:26 remaining in the third stanza.  “Before my first tying-goal, we were really hyped up when our defenseman, Riley Sand, scored a nice goal on a fast break. So, I wanted to keep the momentum going and was able to get enough space to fire off my shot. It felt great to be back in it. We had momentum.”  John Jay scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, but Rebel Thomas Kuney answered to tie the game at 4-4.  “John Jay scored early in the fourth to go up one, and after we had a strong third quarter, we knew we had to get the momentum back,” Kuney said. “Getting a man up was the perfect opportunity to get momentum back, and capitalizing on it felt great.”  Kuney then scored again to put the Rebels up 5-4.  “My second goal also came off a man-up opportunity, where we simply executed the play that our coaches drew up for us. Kyle Gallagher had a perfect pass inside and we felt good getting our first lead of the game.”  John Jay went back up by scoring twice before Moore scored again, to tie the game at 6-6, with just 1:50 left in regulation.   “For my second-tying goal, I knew we needed it, and I started down the right side and quickly faked and drove down the middle,” Moore said. “It was later in the game, so to be back in it again felt even better and the momentum was strong.”  Oban Rader added an assist, with K.C. Bryan making 12 saves for the Rebels.  “Defensively, we played solid all game, causing turnovers and limiting their chances,” Kuney said. “In the first half, we had good opportunities, but struggled to finish offensively. In the second half, we started finishing on our opportunities and it gave us a chance to come back from the three-goal deficit we faced early in the third.”  Lakeland/Panas also played another thriller on Thursday (4/20), losing 6-5 in overtime at Ramapo, which was the 2017 Group 2 New Jersey State Champion and 2018 Bergen County Champion.  Gallagher (3G, 2A), Vinny Savastano (1G), Kuney (1G), Moore (1A), Bryan (14 saves), and Anthony Farroni (8/15 faceoffs) led the Rebels (2-6) against Ramapo.  Rebels nipped in OT at John Jay-CR  L/P’s Moore and Kuney score twice   Michael Pisacreta looks for an opening.
