I get extremely overjoyed when I see a hummingbird. To me, they are almost mystical because they don’t exist on the continent I’m from, Asia (or anywhere else in the Eastern Hemisphere). I only saw them in nature documentaries and in storybooks growing up. My   rst real-life sighting happened outside my window after I moved here 10 years ago. And just last week, I saw one at Katonah Nursery. Hummingbirds don’t show up just anywhere—so spotting one at a garden center says a lot about the place. For more than 45 years, the Lopane family, owners of Katonah Nursery, have been o‰ ering a wide selection of quality plants. We can’t have a Spring Home without featuring this local gem. I guess even the hummingbirds agree that it’s a magical place to be this time of year. Enjoy our photo collage of this year’s spring beauties on page 4. If you are planning a party this season, I am sure you are aware of the balloon decoration trend; it’s hard to resist. One ballooner is set to impress us all with her creations. She is Caryn Cannova, the Hudson Valley Balloon Girl. Here’s how creative she is with her designs: She saw a dogwood tree in full bloom. In true ballooner fashion, she decorated the tree with her balloons. We are not talking about hanging a bunch of balloons from the tree. Let’s just say she got some attention internationally for this design. Read all about the Hudson Valley’s very own balloon girl. And there’s more, so read on! PHOTOS: VIM WILKINSON BY VIM WILKINSON EDITOR “Look at it, it’s like a candy store,” said Joe Lopane of Katonah Nursery as I met up with him for a chat. Joe was spot on. e moment I pulled up to the parking lot, I was drowned in a sea of plants in a myriad of colors, shapes, and textures that lled this nursery and garden center, located right on Route 100 in Somers. A visit to Katonah Nursery in the spring is indeed like a trip to the candy store. It’s fascinating, exciting, and truly humbling to be blessed with such a vast array of plants at a local garden center. From colorful foliage to pollinator magnets in familiar and brand-new varieties, Katonah Nursery has it all. And shopping there comes with an extra perk: the pleasant and friendly service of the Lopane family, who have been here for generations. at combination is what keeps longtime customers like Colleen Westbrook coming back again and again. She tells us she’s enjoyed especially good results with the organic zucchini and is very impressed with the overall quality of Katonah Nursery’s plants. For me, going to Katonah Nursery is not just about buying a plant or two. It’s the whole experience of discovering a new variety, nding great service, sharing growing tips, and getting the best advice. I even got to see a beautiful hummingbird ‹ uttering away at the catmint ‹ owers. I can now add hummingbird sightings to that list of perks! It can feel overwhelming, because it pretty much is.  But to be a pro, ask yourself a few basic questions. You can turn that vast spectrum of available wines to your advantage. THE ‘C-V-S’ METHOD My wine-shopping strategy can be reduced to an easy mnemonic: “CVS” — for Context, Value, and Style. First, context. Are you buying a wine for a speciŽ c occasion, or just to keep around the house? Is it for multiple people? Is it a gift, or a “you-bring-the-wine” bottle? Is it for a summer backyard situation? Or for a formal dinner? What sort of food is involved? And will you be having the wine all at once, or over several nights? Do you want the wine to impress someone, or to just fade gently into the background? Second, value. ere are good values to be had in practically every category of wine. In fact, there are so many from $12.99 to $24.99, you should always start shopping in this range. If you feel you actually need to spend more, consider multiple bottles rather than one — or make it a special bottle, not just an expensive one. ird, style. Very basic, and yet very important. Some wines are bigger than others, or rougher, or sharper. If you like smooth wines, and you are shopping for yourself, make that favorite ™ avor proŽ le a priority. If shopping for a group, you may want a more generic, crowd-friendly style. Similarly, if the wine is to be opened in short order, does its style Ž t the season? ink of these factors — context, value, style — as Ž lters to help zoom in on a wine that truly Ž ts a situation. FOURTH OF JULY BBQ You’re invited to a friend’s backyard, expecting to be with lots of people, and diverse ages. e easy go-to here is a dry rosé. Context: it’s summery, versatile with casual foods and salads. Value: stick to the $10-$20 range. Style: Dry rosé is designed to go down easy, without much to think about or talk about. And bringing an American example made in the classic Provencal style is a perfect demonstration of how U.S. wines are world-class.   GIVING A GIFT Need a bottle for someone you know likes wine? Use the type of wine the recipient likes as a jumping-oŸ point. For instance, if they like Pinot Grigio, consider another fruity, unwooded wine, such as Austrian Gruner Veltliner, white Bordeaux, Spanish Verdejo, or South African Chenin Blanc.  TUESDAY NIGHT WINE Do you have a house wine? One you can pop open and not have to think about whether or not it “goes” or whether you will like it? My suggestion here: kick the tires on a dry, fruity, medium-bodied European red, such as a Barbera from Italy, Cotes du Rhone from France, Rioja from Spain, or Alentejo from Portugal. For generations, these reds have been satisfying diners while being relatively gentle on wallets.  Bill “Tish” Tisherman, a longtime Bedford resident and former editor of Wine Enthusiast and Beverage Media, develops wine tastings and events via his website, wineforall. com. MAY 25, 2023 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 7 PEACE OF MIND “Seven years ago, my wife Liz was diagnosed with dementia. I became her full-time caregiver and initially managed to run errands and leave her at home but as she progressed it became increasingly difficult. She was no longer safe on her own and lost the ability to do things for herself. Soon I was exhausted and overwhelmed. We had part-time help but that was met with an angry response and she became adept at forcing people to resign. When I discovered Maplewood, they sealed the deal. Everything was explained with empathy and understanding and created a plan for Liz’s move that would minimize her stress and anxiety. Liz is thriving in Currents. The staff are wonderful and skilled at caring for people with dementia. She has made many friends and joins them for programming and meals. It is a great comfort to know she’s safe and secure. I visit often but am no longer overwhelmed with caring for her 24/7.” —Wiffiiam, for his Wife,Liz, Resident Maplewood Senior Living is dedicated to the care and well-being of our residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. PAGE 10 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – MAY 25, 2023 BY VIM WILKINSON EDITOR She studied the art of ballooning with the Balloon Institute in Tennessee. She designs with a heart full of passion, creating stunning balloon decorations for any occasion. Meet Caryn Cannova, the Hudson Valley Balloon Girl. is friendly mom is all about making her customers’ events simply outstanding. How did you become a balloon artist? It all started two years ago. I woke up, and something inside me said, “You need to go to balloon school.” I was not a “balloon person” until that day. I went online and found an online school. I graduated three months later and began studying with the top ballooners from all over the world, mostly from Europe. Balloons became my magic. How do you come up with each decoration style or concept? Each design is literally just in my head. I have an idea of what I want each design to look like, but then when actually creating, the balloons often take on a life of their own, if I don’t like it, I will start over. I certainly do ask for clients’ input as to what they are looking for. But there is no template. Each design is unique to itself. What makes your work unique or di erent from others? All of my balloons are biodegradable. Because I am a “luxury ballooner,” 90% of the time I double stuŠ my balloons, so each balloon you see is actually two balloons. I personally think it gives my work a more luxurious quality. And double stu‹ ng also allows me to combine colors to create custom colors to match the client’s color palette.  I am emotionally attached to each design. It matters to me, genuinely, that my clients are not just “happy.” I want them to be thrilled. Usually, I am asked to be a part of an important event; that matters to me. I am so honored and grateful to be a part of someone’s story. I want it perfect for them, so they have a magical memory. What’s your future plan for Hudson Valley Balloon Girl? My goal is to be able to work with event planners on large events that require more than one setup. In addition to building a team, I am slowly acquiring more backdrops. No matter the occasion, this Hudson Valley Balloon Girl is ready to drive up in her van to bring color and joy to your event. With years of experience and deep expertise in the eld, Marshall Alarm Systems (MAS) in Yorktown is the go-to company for a complete line of video surveillance, re alarm systems and more. Since 1976, the family owned-and-operated company has provided high-quality products from leading manufacturers— and handles installation, maintenance and repairs of a variety of alarm systems. ƒ e  fully-licensed professionals take pride in designing and engineering the best con guration for every customer. “What sets us apart from other companies is that we look at what is needed according to each home or business (with a free estimate), and our sta† is right on top of things; they will always answer the phone, give you quick help or service and even do remote testing,” said company Vice President Michele Marinace. She said the company is well known for its high-tech re alarm systems that ensure early detection and a rapid response— something that can minimize  potential harm and  re-related damages. ƒ e company can also monitor for low temperature and water levels to detect Œ oods.  Beyond re protection, other products and services are o† ered, such as regulated entry into a premise, called an Access Control System. From a single door, to hundreds of doors with unlimited users, MAS can create and manage a system that oversees admittance and makes for a safer environment for residents or employees. Video Surveillance Systems that run 24/7 can be custom-designed for a home and/or business, and allow users to remotely monitor all activity— thereby providing protection by deterring unwanted visitors and preventing theft or vandalism. As far as detection and response for the security systems, MAS’s  Residential Intrusion Systems rely on a 24-hour monitoring service to promptly dispatch police to homes. “It’s for security and peace of mind,” Marinace said. “ƒ e re alarms are on— whether you set your alarm or not—it is a secure feeling when you go to bed knowing that you are protected.” Feeling safe and secure with Marffi a Alarm Sys ms, Inc. PAGE 14 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – MAY 25, 2023 BY VIM WILKINSON  EDITOR  Spring comes with one rather large problem: PESTS. As the temperatures rise, these unwanted invaders come out of hibernation to cause irritation, property damage and even illness. From deer, wasps, termites, and rats to mosquitoes and diseasecarrying ticks, these unwelcome visitors can interrupt the joy of the season.   Fortunately, quality pest control services have the expertise to keep these invaders at bay inside and outside the home. We took a closer look at a local company that has been helping homeowners and businesses with their pest problems since 1963.  All County Pest Control is a second-generation family owned-and-operated company servicing Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties.  “We o‡ er Home Protection Plans for year-round coverage of ants, spiders, crickets, wasps, yellow jackets and rodents,” said Ed Binns, owner and operator of the company. “In addition, we have complete lawn treatment programs for dealing with ticks in your yard by treating the entire Œ nished lawn area as well as the woods’ edge.
