The Butterfly Project
honors children who died

in the Holocaust

e following is from Alison Vara, social studies teacher at North Salem High School:

Each year, as part of our unit on the Holocaust and World War II, students at North Salem High School take part in e Butter y
Project, created by the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas.

e students read a poem written by a child while they were in the eresenstadt Ghetto in Czechoslovakia. All of the children who wrote the poems ultimately
perished in the Holocaust and their lives are honored through this project. ese poems re ect the experiences in the Ghetto, but through the eyes of a child. While
many children write about the realities that surround them, others poems re ect their imagination as a means to ee the cruel world they are in.

After the war, these poems were found and gathered into a book called “I Never Saw Another Butter y.” e students are assigned to re ect on a poem, and
then to design a paper butter y re ecting the voice of the child. e butter ies hang in the classroom during the course of the unit, and are taken down during the
study of liberation and the aftermath of the Holocaust.

In the past, the Holocaust Museum asked teachers to mail their butter ies at the close of the unit as they planned to create a butter y exhibit consisting of 1.5
million butter ies, representing the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. e museum reached its goal; however, it is the intent of the North Salem
High School Social Department to have its own exhibit of butter ies to honor the innocent lives that were lost.

1. To qualify for this o er, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this o er between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. This o er is subject to change at any time, without notice. This o er is available only to Platinum

enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this o er. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this o er is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for
a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the o er. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert

compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid

My name is Debbie Kilmer and I am a Warrior. This title makes me proud.

I survived a rare and aggressive cancer called Cholangiocarcinoma, or bile duct
cancer. Cholangiocarcinoma was determined to shake me and break me five years
ago, but I laughed in its ugly face and now it’s time to celebrate this milestone and
raise some funds for Cholangiocarcinoma research. This rare and deadly cancer does
not get the research support it deserves and I would like to help to change that!

I have been planning this celebration/fundraiser for almost five years now. I wasn’t
sure, to be honest, if I would be here in five years, with the sobering statistics of this
awful cancer, but here I am, ready to celebrate and raise funds to find a cure for
Cholangiocarcinoma.

Thank you all for your love and support! I cannot wait to celebrate with you!
