NEWSPAPERS PUBLISHED WEEKLY BY HALSTON MEDIA, LLC MAIN OFFICE 118 N. Bedford Road, Suite 100 Mount Kisco, NY 10549 ©2023 Halston Media, LLC Recently, we had the pleasure of collaborating with a business owner who reached out to our sales team to feature her services in Hudson Valley Living (HVL). She conveyed that our publication came highly recommended as an ideal avenue to promote her business. One of her customers had spoken glowingly about our paper, prompting her to contact us. Hearing such commendation reaffirmed the dedication of our entire team, from sales, editorial to design, in curating each monthly edition of HVL. With HVL, we are driven by two primary objectives. Firstly, we aim to furnish our readers with invaluable information, enriching their understanding of our vibrant region. Secondly, we provide a platform for businesses to showcase their offerings, serving as a conduit for them to connect with both readers and communities through our spotlight features. This approach has proven highly effective. It enables readers to discover a diverse array of products and services while affording businesses the opportunity to present themselves authentically, emphasizing their strengths and unique qualities. Inspired by this validation, we’ve amplified our efforts with the introduction of several new subsections in this issue. Thematic sections tailored to seasonal interests, such as our recent pizza feature for the Big Game edition in February, have garnered enthusiastic responses from both readers and local pizzerias. This edition is brimming with similar subsections, including recommendations for Summer Camps, Senior Health, Meal Prep, and Landscapers. It’s a symbiotic relationship benefiting both our readership and the businesses featured. Our aspiration is for readers across our broad distribution area, encompassing eight major towns and parts of others, to leverage the resources we’ve diligently sourced and highlighted. Simultaneously, we strive for business owners to recognize the platform we’ve cultivated as a potent marketing tool for their products and services. Halston Media’s Hudson Valley Living is swiftly emerging as a formidable avenue and platform, uniquely positioned to reach a focused yet expansive regional audience. Our formula is one that effectively serves the interests of both readers and business owners alike. Read on! PAGE 4 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – MARCH 14, 2024 BY JESSICA JAFET CONTRIBUTING WRITER Protecting clients’ wealth, safeguarding their legacies and addressing the multitude of issues related to elder care has been the core work of Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano LLP,  the Westchester law firm that was formed two decades ago and whose team boasts over 150 years of combined legal experience.  Anthony J. Enea, a managing partner at the firm, reflected on the evolution and longevity of the practice. “The firm was founded by yours truly, Richard A. Scanlan, Esq., and George A. Sirignano, Jr., Esq., two gentleman and excellent attorneys and partners that I am still honored to call dear friends—and since that time, we have been privileged to have Sara E. Meyers, Esq. become a partner in the firm,” he said. With offices in White Plains and Somers, the dedicated attorneys focus the practice on customized estate and longterm care planning, asset protection planning, Medicaid eligibility and applications (nursing home care), guardianship proceedings for the disabled (both contested and non-contested), pooled trusts and much more.  “We encourage individuals to start planning for their future, and emphasize that it’s never too early or too late to do so,” Enea added.  Over the past two decades, Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano has grown both in size and in expertise. The firm currently comprises seven full-time attorneys, four paralegals, and five office staff. Anthony J. Enea and Sara Myers hold certifications as elder law attorneys from the National Elder Law Foundation, which is accredited by the American Bar Association, and the entire team is committed to staying at the forefront of the latest legal expertise in the field. In 2022, the firm welcomed Michael P. Enea, Esq., who joined the team following a career at two of New York City’s largest law firms and brings a wealth of experience. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in taxation from New York University School of Law.  A central tenet of the law practice is the education and empowerment of clients and peers. In 2023, partners and associates at  Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano conducted over 75 educational programs in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, and New York City. Their commitment to knowledge-sharing is also evident in the multitude of articles written by the firm’s attorneys.  Families can trust they are in good hands with some of the best legal professionals in the region who are skilled in elder care—and who hold a commitment to providing personalized attention and a tailored approach based on each client’s individual needs. According to the firm, its partners and associates consistently receive recognition and honors from Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, and MartindaleHubell, where they have been acknowledged as pre-eminent attorneys who represent clients on a range of matters. “We are well-versed in all aspects of elder law unique to New York state, such as spousal refusal, home care and nursing home Medicaid eligibility, pooled trusts, guardianship proceedings and special needs planning,” Enea explained.  As a firm that serves Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Bronx, and New York, Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano, LLP is proud to be one of the leading authorities in Elder Law, Guardianships, and Will, Trusts & Estates in the entire region. From wellness and prevention, to the latest in treatments and surgical procedures, expert specialists are here to care for you. Steven M. Andelman, MD Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery Nicole Solomos, DO Sports Medicine & Lifestyle Medicine The arrival of warmer weather is a great time to get back on track with physical activity. No matter your ability or experience level, injury prevention is key. Some of the most common orthopedic sports injuries are tendon and ligament strains and sprains, caused by overstretching or tearing from either a sudden movement or overuse. Add in a lack of conditioning, especially after a period of inactivity, and the risk of injury goes way up. Unlike muscles which heal very quickly, our tendons and ligaments are more fibrous and take longer to repair and heal – sometimes as long as 6 to 9 months before you feel ready to go back to sports or exercise class. How to get yourself game ready again Make strengthening exercises a part of your own preseason program. Start with low weights and high repetitions. If you are a runner, start out doing one mile a few days a week for the first week. In the second week, you can increase the mileage as long as you aren’t feeling any pain or stress on your legs and ankles. It’s important to build up slowly over the course of the month to allow your body’s structures to reacclimate to the stress, especially those parts of the body at higher risk such as the knee and ankle. Overhead athletes such as swimmers, tennis players, and baseball or softball players should follow a similar gradual return to activity in order to protect their shoulders and elbows. Dynamic warmups, where you stretch and move at the same time, are a great way to get your entire musculoskeletal and cardiovascular system moving. Some good examples are bodyweight squats, walking lunges, frog jumps, running in place, and jumping jacks. If you do end up with a sprain or strain – rest, ice, compression, and elevation, with some ibuprofen or acetaminophen is the first line of treatment. For lingering pain, or if you are unable to get back to activities after few days, it’s worth making an appointment with an orthopedist for evaluation. Patients frequently ask me if there’s a particular food or diet that will speed healing from an orthopedic injury. Unfortunately, there is no data to back that up, but one essential I recommend is vitamin D, which plays an important role in calcium absorption for bone and soft tissue health. MARCH 14, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 9 I have met some of the nicest people in Surrogate’s Court. Even though Probate avoidance is one of the stated goals of many estate plans, positive interactions between estate attorneys and court staff can alter expectations for the Probate process. Though estate litigations and will contests dot the court’s calendar, Surrogate’s Court primarily deals with uncontested matters. The vast majority of estates involve families navigating a document ecosystem to gain access to their deceased loved one’s holdings. Court employees are tasked with dueling interests – the interest of Surrogate’s Court as a legal institution and the interest of assisting the public during a period of great difficulty. Balancing the paperwork and the human element is essential for Probate success. With every new estate heading to court, there are a few nuts and bolts that have to be in place. Probate requires a Last Will and Testament to be filed in Surrogate’s Court along with a certified copy of the death certificate with the decedent’s listed county of residence matching the county of the court.  A Probate Petition listing information about the deceased, their assets, their family and people named in the Will is executed by the proposed Executor named in the Will and gets scanned and electronically filed with the Court. The closest living heirs of the decedent must execute Waivers and Consents approving of the Executor and the Will’s admission to Probate. Additional documents, including a Family Tree, an Affidavit of Dealy, a Notice of Probate, a Staple Affidavit (if a staple is removed to make copies) and other forms may be required to complete the Probate Process. Estates with minors involved may compel the appointment of a Guardian ad litem to oversee the minor’s interests.  Court filing fees are based on the dollar value of the estate.   Once the Court’s checklist is completed and Court staff have reviewed the filings to their satisfaction, then Letters Testamentary are issued allowing the Executor to start locating and handling estate assets.  Probate timetables are based on a variety of factors. Large families with unresponsive family members can slow the process. Poorly prepared Wills raise legal issues that have to be addressed through further documentation. Though electronic Court filing has significantly reduced the in-person interactions between attorneys and Court personnel, sustained professional communication and cooperation to complete the Probate checklist pushes the Probate Process forward. Disagreements do pop up and the deliberate, time-consuming nature of the Probate process can exacerbate those rifts.   There are Court procedures to deal with these issues. Accounting proceedings that focus on how estate assets were utilized can be expensive. Estate law practitioners can often settle conflicts, with the Court’s encouragement and guidance, outside of Court. Attorneys expend a lot of energy figuring out how to avoid Probate. When Probate is necessary, fear of a bureaucratic nightmare frames the minds of the uninitiated. In reality, Probate is neither an unknowable puzzle nor is it a piece of cake. Like many things in life, it is a means to an end. Following the document checklist, maintaining positive communications with the Court clerks and remaining patient with family members will go a long way towards shortening the Probate Process.    Contact the professionals at The Feller Group, P.C. for more insight on Estate Planning. Discover the Greens At Greenwich The number of people living with diabetes has risen dramatically over the last four decades. According to the World Health Organization, between 1980 and 2014, the number of people with diabetes rose from 108 million to 422 million. The dramatic spike in diabetes cases in such a short period of time highlights just how big a threat the disease poses to the health of people across the globe. That makes now a perfect time to learn more about diabetes and what individuals can do to manage their disease. WHAT IS DIABETES? Diabetes is a chronic disease related to how the body produces or utilizes insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin or cannot effectively utilize the insulin it produces. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TYPE 1 AND TYPE 2 DIABETES? The WHO notes that more than 95 percent of the people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association®, type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not use insulin properly, whereas type 1 occurs when the body does not produce insulin. CAN DIABETES BE MANAGED? It’s important that individuals diagnosed with diabetes recognize that both types 1 and 2 can be managed. The ADA reports that diet and routine exercise are vital to managing type 2 diabetes. The ADA urges people who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes to speak with a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN/RD) to find foods that are healthy and help them feel satisfied at the end of a meal. Lingering may compel people to make poor dietary choices that could make their condition worse. The ADA’s “Nutrition Consensus Report,” published in 2019, is a comprehensive review of 600 research articles over a five-year span conducted by a panel of scientists, doctors, endocrinologists, diabetes educators, and dietitians. That review emphasized the significance of working with an RDN, noting that recommendations about diet for diabetes patients must take factors specific to each individual, including their life circumstances and preferences, into consideration. The review also noted that each person responds differently to different types of foods and diets, so there is no single diet that will work for all patients. Though there is no “one-size-fits-all” diet for people with diabetes, the ADA created the Diabetes Plate Method as a simple way to help people with diabetes create healthy meals. The method urges individuals to fill half their plate with nonstarchy vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli, green beans, and salad greens. One-quarter of the plate should be filled with lean proteins such as chicken, lean beef (cuts like chuck, round or sirloin), or fish (salmon, cod, tuna). Plant-based sources of protein also count, and these include beans, lentils, hummus, falafel, edamame, and tofu, among other foods. The final quarter of the plate should be reserved for foods that are higher in carbohydrates, such as whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, whole grain pastas), beans and legumes, or even fruits and dried fruit. More people than ever before are being diagnosed with diabetes. Diet plays a significant role in managing life with diabetes. More information can be found at diabetes.org. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! CROSSWORD SUDOKU Crossword puzzles are one of the most popular pastimes in the world. Crosswords are square grids made up of white- and black-shaded squares. The goal is to fill in all of the letters to form words and phrases that work both vertically and horizontally. The grid varies based on the country of origin. Certain grids also have 180-degree rotational symmetry so that the pattern appears the same if the paper is turned upside down. Historians are uncertain about who created the world’s first crossword puzzle, although it is believed to be something that originated in the 19th or early 20th century. Arthur Wynne, a journalist from Liverpool, England, published a word-cross puzzle in the New York World that had many of the features of the modern game, and the crossword is frequently attributed to Wynne. Even though crossword puzzles have been entertaining and helping people pass the time for more than 100 years, the benefits of crosswords go beyond  boredombusting. Various studies have shown the positive effects crossword puzzles can have on a person’s brain and capacity to learn. • Improve vocabulary: Crossword puzzles introduce players to new words. And players may learn some interesting facts about various subjects simply by filling in crosswords correctly. • Strengthens memory: The more frequently participants engage with word puzzles, the better they can perform tasks that measure attention, reasoning and memory, according to a study from the University of Exeter Medical School and Kings College London. The study found people who play crosswords have brain function equivalent to those 10 years younger than their actual age. • Improve socialization: Crossword puzzles can help you connect socially with others who also play crossword puzzles. Solving a puzzle together as a group is a fine way to connect and meet new people. • Help relieve stress: Crossword puzzles can engage the brain and mind, helping direct attention away from stressful situations. Crosswords also provide a way to relax and unwind. • May help prevent brain diseases: According to the Alzheimer’s Association, research indicates keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build reserves of brain cells and connections. In addition, those who keep their minds active may have lower amounts of a protein that forms beta amyloid plaques attributed to Alzheimer’s disease. Crossword puzzles can fill empty hours with an entertaining and educational activity. However, there are many other benefits to doing crossword puzzles that may surprise even the most ardent puzzle enthusiasts. This article is provided by Metro Creative Connection. MARCH 14, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 15 The paths wine drinkers take are rarely straight (and that’s just fine). Being on the plus side of 60 myself, I was excited to do a column on how people’s taste in wine evolves into their senior years. But boy, was I surprised. Conventional wine-industry wisdom holds a few basic principles: that younger drinkers tend to graduate from mild/sweet to fuller-bodied dry wines; that people generally drink less but better as they age; that travel experience can have a significant impact on ongoing drinking habits; and that collectors tend to favor European wines, particularly French. In discussing the topic with dozens of peers, I learned above all that there is no shared pattern. Two common themes emerged, however. Many of my peers referenced sudden shifts in their drinking habits in middle age — due to medical reasons (allergies, medications, et al) or just dramatic decisions. “I just gave up on Chardonnay,” for example; or “I can’t drink red wine anymore.” Another theme I encountered when discussing whether our taste in wine “matures” was that the biggest difference between their drinking back then vs. now is just how many different things there are to drink. Not only has the wine world exploded into a veritable universe, but ditto beer, spirits and lots of beverages that never existed last century. Does that mean that senior wine lovers are busy testing out craft ciders, hard seltzers and canned cocktails? Not among the peeps I talked with. The general sentiment: by the time they reach 60, most wine drinkers are happy to have found a comfort zone. Maybe it’s broad-ish, like “Italian reds.” Maybe it’s focused: not just Sauvignon Blanc but Sancerre. But most impressively, whatever their comfort zone, the 60+ drinkers seemed happy with their choices. Confident. Positive. As they should be. At our age, we know what we like, in both wine and life. Bill “Tish” Tisherman, a longtime Bedford resident and former editor of Wine Enthusiast and Beverage Media, develops wine tastings and events via his website, wineforall.com. Suburban Wines & Spirits in Yorktown Heights is the sponsor of this column. DO TASTES IN WINE MATURE? PAGE 18 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – MARCH 14, 2024 BY VIM WILKINSON EDITOR It’s no secret that colleges and universities consider more than just grades during the admissions process. Factors like community service, extracurricular involvement, leadership, test scores, coursework, and more play integral roles. Many families wisely opt to engage education consultants to navigate this intricate journey, guiding students systematically toward their dream college admissions. Guided Consulting, led by Dr. Deborah Hardy, is a trusted local educational consulting firm that specializes in providing a personalized approach tailoring academic, career, and college planning based on each student’s unique interests. The firm was founded with the aim of streamlining the college counseling process and making it stress-free. Here’s a spotlight on Dr. Hardy’s team, who play an integral part in the process from start to finish. Sandra Cefaloni-Henderson Sandra has held various positions of leadership within the Division of Student Affairs, most recently serving as the Dean of Campus Life. She is a member of the Independent Educational Counseling Association (IECA) and the NYS Association of College Admissions Counselors. Sandra has been part of the Guided team for seven years, providing support to students and families on college process counseling, academic planning, and career coaching. She has been able to assist and scaffold student development in various ways as they begin their journey of self-exploration and growth. Lindsay Omin Lindsay began her career as an elementary and middle school teacher in Washington, DC, and Fairfax County, Virginia. 10 years into her career, Lindsay relocated to Westchester. During this transition, she continued to teach in the Bronx while pursuing a school counseling degree at Lehman College. Today, Lindsay is an educational consultant, supporting and guiding students and their parents through the college planning and application process. Lindsay firmly believes that each student’s path is unique and that every student has a special story to tell. She is a member of the Independent Educational Counseling Association (IECA). What is your philosophy on college planning and the application process? Sandra: Starting the process early will allow students to engage in a thoughtful process with purpose and meaning. Additionally, it will give them a chance to cultivate their interests, diversify their resume and take time to identify their values and goals for college and the future. Lindsay: We explore your passions, goals, aspirations, and needs, which will lead each client to their right fit socially, academically, and financially. What are your priorities when it comes to helping students? Sandra: My priority is to get to know each student I have the honor of working with. My approach to working through the process with them is tailored according to their needs and goals. Lindsay: Really listening to each client and helping them to find and express their true selves within their applications and essays. Your best advice to students: Sandra: Write things down as you tour various colleges, whether virtually or in person. It’s important to have comparative feedback for each school, as this will help you when making decisions. My other piece of advice is: Trust your gut instinct. Lindsay: Everyone is their own unique self and everyone has their own fit. Follow yours and not everyone else.  Your best advice to parents: Sandra: Empower your student throughout the process. Lindsay: We are a team. Don’t listen to the chatter about what everyone else is doing. Instead we will focus on your child’s needs and their best fit.  NAVIGATING COLLEGE PLANNING Meet the team behind Guided Consulting Guided Consulting, LLC 900 South Lake Blvd., Suite 8 Mahopac 845-628-0726 guidedconsult.com COLLEGE COUNSELING • ACADEMIC PLANNING • CAREER COACHING (845) 628-0726 • www.guidedconsult.com 900 South Lake Blvd., Suite 8 • Mahopac, NY 10541 EMPOWERING students’ critical thinking skills through academic, career, and post-secondary planning. However, here’s a news flash for you: the club would be happy to hear from you regarding a party or a reception. Although Anglebrook reserves its golf privileges exclusively for members and their guests, the club and its beautiful main dining room and / or patio terrace are available to nonmembers on a case-by-case basis. So the club encourages you to call or stop in if you’re shopping for a venue for a bridal or baby shower, an anniversary or graduation party or even a family reunion. “We have fantastic event space here that’s often made available to non-members,” said General Manager Matt Sullivan. “And just as we do for our members, we provide quality food and beverage at a reasonable price and outstanding service.” Indeed, the main dining room, with a fireplace at each end and high cathedral ceilings, is breathtaking to say the least. The clubhouse, designed by world-renown architect Robert A.M. Stern, opened in 1998 and has been ranked among the top golf clubhouses in North America. Accolades aside, the non-members who’ve hosted events here will attest to the fact that they also received a great value for their investment. “I get to know our clients and customize a menu for their event, rather than using a pre-set menu,” said longtime Chef Steve Quattrocchi. “We spend time with each client to gain their trust and to ensure that their event will be talked about for years.” Anglebrook opened in 1998 and became an award-winning golf course when Golf Digest ranked it 16th best in New York State the following year. The clubhouse sits on a natural hill and provides jaw-dropping views of the impeccably manicured 9th and 18th holes. “I had my dream wedding at Anglebrook two years ago and it couldn’t have been more perfect,” said Courtney McKoan. “It was beautiful inside and out, the food was amazing and the staff was on top of every single detail. You really have to see how spectacular it is to believe it.” Stop in or call Anglebrook today at (914) 245-5588 or email your inquiry to [email protected]. MARCH 14, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 27 BY VIM WILKINSON EDITOR With summer fast approaching and the promise of warm days ahead, now is the perfect time to ensure your pool is ready for the season. The Liner Specialists, based in Carmel, is dedicated to the meticulous maintenance and rejuvenation of swimming pools. Founded by industry veteran Frank Christiana, whose expertise spans over three decades, the Liner Specialists have almost 10,000 pools under their belt. The well-established company has a wide service area in New York, offering a comprehensive range of services such as providing custom pool liners and covers, pool sales, installation, and renovations. The wide range of pool covers and liners provides customers with options for their pools, not only to make them look beautiful but also to create a safe and inviting space for family and friends to enjoy. Additionally, the team of skilled professionals can also assist with simple repairs or complete renovations. We asked Frank to share some insights regarding aspects of pool maintenance. Here’s what he said. What are some of the important things pool owners overlook when it comes to pool maintenance? Water balancing is key to your pool, whether you have a vinyl liner or a gunite pool. Rain here lowers your pool’s PH due to the acid in the rain. Liner pools need to have a PH between 7.2 and 7.8, while gunite pools like to sit around the 7.2 range. What are some of the extra benefits Liner Specialists offers? We offer a full office and warehouse staff, as well as stock chemicals and cleaning equipment. We can also provide lower-maintenance equipment such as Zeo filters, salt generators, solar heating and high-quality safety covers. A good quality safety cover will help your pool open cleaner in the spring. List of services offered by Liner Specialists • Custom pool liner replacements • Pool sales & installation • Installation of custom safety covers • Pool repair and renovations • Installing new pool steps, sun ledges, and spas • Pool light installation • Repairs to broken plumbing, equipment, and new equipment installation • New vinyl pool installation from start to finish • Openings and closings • Pool inspections POOL PERFECTION Getting you ready to swim this summer with Liner Specialists PHOTO COURTESY OF LINER SPECIALISTS The Liner Specialists 1214 Route 52, Suite 200 Carmel 845-225-4124 thelinerspecialistsny.com Ultimate Pools & Custom Pool Liners Free On-Site Estimates FREE ROBOT or YEAR SUPPLY OF CHEMICALS Sales & Installation thelinerspecialistsny.com • 1214 RT 52 • Carmel, NY 10512 (845) 225-4124 • [email protected] TM Openings • Closings • Vinyl Pool Renovations • Safety Covers (With the purchase of an in-stock Ultimate Pool. PAGE 34 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – MARCH 14, 2024 Many adults fondly recall their days at summer camp. The increase in households with two working parents has made it more important than ever to find a camp to accommodate youngsters who need to remain engaged and entertained throughout over summer vacation. That reality has led to more summer camp options, but it’s not always so easy finding one that’s the right fit for a child. No two children are the same and kids change quite a bit as they grow up. So a camp that worked for an older child or even one that accommodated a younger camper may not make the perfect fit this summer. With that in mind, parents can consider these tips to find the right summer camp for their children. • Ask around. Even if no two campers are the same, it can benefit parents to ask around when shopping for a summer camp. Summer camp spots are limited and it’s not uncommon for competition for available spaces to develop, which can make it more difficult to gather information. However, ask neighbors whose children have outgrown summer camp if there’s one they might recommend (or would not recommend). • Pursue a package deal. Though package deals might not result in lower rates, approaching a camp with the parents of your child’s friend or friends may work in your favor. Kids  undoubtedly will be more excited about camp if their friends will be there as well. Camp officials may see these quasi-package deals as beneficial and a quick and easy way to fill spots. • Ask kids how they want to spend summer. Specialized camps run the gamut from sports camps focusing on a particular sport to general outdoor recreation camps to camps that cater to young musicians. More general camps offer a wide range of activities throughout the summer, and that might appeal to children less interested in specialized camps. Ask youngsters for their input before making a final decision. Involve kids in the search by showing them websites of prospective camps and asking them what they think of each one. If attending an in-person consultation, bring kids along so they can form their own impression. • Make sure the camp suits your schedule. Kids’ preferences are not the only opinions to consider. In households with two working parents, moms and dads must find a camp that aligns with their work schedule. Many camps offer halfday sessions and/or full-day sessions, but some offer just one or the other. If parents need full-day sessions, they might need to begin their search early to ensure they can secure a spot before they fill up. • Identify what you can afford. Camp costs vary significantly, so parents should identify how much they can afford before they begin their search. Doing so may eliminate various camps right off the bat, saving parents precious time as they try to find a camp for their children before spots fill up. Many towns offer local camps at schools, and these may be an affordable option. Parents also should know that many camps allow them to pick certain weeks or days of the week a child will attend rather than insisting kids attend camp for the duration of the summer. Summer camp season is right around the corner. Parents and children can work together to identify a camp that will ensure this summer is filled with fun. This article was submitted by Metro Creative Connection. HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT FIT FOR SUMMER CAMP

MARCH 14, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 35 Many adults have fond memories of attending summer camp when they were children. The American Camp Association reports that each year more than 14 million children and adults take advantage of the camp experience. Summer camp is a place for kids to learn new skills, make new friends, experience being away from home for extended periods of time, and explore new locales. Summer camp program lengths vary. Some children attend local camps that may last a week or two, while others attend sleep-away camps that last a little longer. Since summer vacation typically lasts between eight to 10 weeks, parents may discover there still is plenty of downtime after summer camp ends. Here are some ways to fill the gap between the end of camp and the start of a new school year. SCHEDULE A VACATION What better way to keep the magic of summer going than by rolling summer camp right into a family vacation? Give kids time to enjoy a few days to relax at home, but then buckle up for the next adventure. This can be a trip away from home, or a series of day trips or activities guided by all members of the family. ORGANIZE A SLEEPOVER EXCHANGE Parents of school-aged children can coordinate with one another to fill up a week or more with sleepovers. Each family can take a night or two, and the kids can jump from house to house extending the fun with one another. Sleepovers can occur inside the home or under tents in the yard. RECREATE FAVORITE CAMP ACTIVITIES AT HOME Why not take what makes camp entertaining and try it at home? Copy the camp’s itinerary and engage in similar activities, such as canoeing or nature hikes. On nights when the weather cooperates, everyone can gather around a fire pit to roast marshmallows. ENROLL IN A RECREATIONAL PROGRAM Some towns offer free or low-fee activities to residents through their parks and recreation departments. If budgeting does not allow for a camp experience, there are likely town-wide activities that can fill the gaps until it’s time for children to go back to school. Some even may offer after-hours childcare options for parents who have scheduling conflicts with work. When summer camp ends, parents have different options they can explore to keep children engaged and supervised until a new school year begins. This article was provided by Metro Creative Connection. Keep summer days fun and busy when camp ends

MARCH 14, 2024 – HUDSON VALLEY LIVING – SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO HALSTON MEDIA – PAGE 37 WE SPECIALIZE IN 8, 10, 12 & 15 YARD DUMPSTERS ON WHEELS & TRADITIONAL DUMPSTERS 10-40 YARD RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL CLEAN-OUTS It can be bittersweet when adult children decide the time has come to move out of the family home. Parents perhaps get their first trial run of this scenario when their children go off to college or enlist in the military. Rooms are left empty, if only for a certain period of time. Eventually, those rooms will remain empty as adult children move out of the house for good. Converting a child’s bedroom into an area for adults may take some planning. It can be exciting to regain space, but at the same time, it can be disheartening to convert a child’s bedroom once and for all. When the time comes and homeowners are emotionally ready to tackle bedroom conversions, these tips can help the process go smoothly. • Repurpose the space for them. Give a childhood bedroom an adult spin without changing too much. If furniture is in good shape, replace the bedding, change the flooring, swap out artwork, and remove “youthful” items like toys, trophies and other collectibles. When the child comes home to visit, he or she will still feel comfortable in the space. • Create extra storage. The bedroom can be transformed into a walk-in closet or dressing space. According to the design experts at Houzz, many clients request this type of dressing room situation. There’s a bonus if the layout allows the space to connect to the owner’s suite or bathroom. This is a major overhaul, so homeowners should enlist a professional contractor. • Make a fitness center. A bedroom can be turned into a home gym to make working out more convenient. Homeowners should take inventory of equipment they may have and then figure out where existing and new equipment will go. They may need to consult a structural engineer to ensure that the flooring can bear the weight of additional equipment. • Create a work space. One of the best ways to transform adult children’s bedrooms is to convert the spaces into home offices. Those who have been setting up “desks” at dining room tables or elsewhere may be excited about the prospects of finally having a private, dedicated space to work from home. • Turn it into a craft room. The bedroom can be converted into a space to explore hobbies and various other interests. A dedicated craft space, a reading nook, a place to store photography equipment, or another function can serve as a useful way to repurpose an empty bedroom. Lamb is most tender in spring and mild in flavor, and it pairs well with the earthiness of asparagus. ROASTED LAMB WITH ROASTED ASPARAGUS Serves 8 to 10 Lamb: 1   leg of lamb or loin of lamb, about 4 to 5 pounds 5   garlic cloves, sliced 2   tablespoons olive oil 4   cups dry white wine 1   fresh bay leaf 4   sprigs fresh rosemary 4   to 5 sprigs fresh thyme Cut small slits in the meat of the lamb with a sharp paring knife. Insert a slice of the garlic into each slit. Place the lamb in a large sealable plastic bag and add the olive oil, 2 cups white wine, bay leaf, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper. Seal the bag tightly and place in the refrigerator to marinate for 12 hours. Remove the lamb from the fridge the next day, at least 4 hours before roasting. Keep the lamb sealed in the marinade bag and allow it to come to room temperature. Heat the oven to 400 F. Remove the lamb from the bag with marinade. Place it on a rack in a roasting pan. Add 2 cups of wine. Roast for 11⁄2 hours or until the thermometer reads 150 to 160 F. Baste with drippings while roasting. Serve warm. Asparagus: 4   pounds of asparagus, remove woody ends 2   cups coarse bread crumbs 1   cup grated Romano cheese 2   tablespoons garlic powder     Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4   large eggs     Sea salt, to taste Preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread crumbs, cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper in a dish or bowl wide enough to hold the asparagus. Mix well to combine thoroughly. Put the eggs in another dish or bowl of similar size and beat well. Working in batches, dip the spears into the egg, making sure they are coated well. Immediately place them in the bread crumb mixture and toss until each spear is fully coated. Transfer the breaded asparagus to a large baking sheet. Place the asparagus in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the breading is browned and crispy. Serve with wedges of fresh lemon.
