Yorktown Boy Scout Troop 174 completes Philmont Trek

Boy Scout Troop 174, whose charter
organization is Grace Lutheran Church,
successfully completed a 12-day back-
packing trek through the Sangre de
Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Moun-
tains in New Mexico.

Troop 174 had previously attempted
to make this trip to the Philmont Scout
Ranch in 2018 and in 2020, but due to
both wildfires and Covid-19, both at-
tempts were unsuccessful.

The highlights of the trek — which
spanned the first two weeks in July for
the Scouts — were climbing to the sum-
mit of Black Mountain (elevation 10,890
feet) and the iconic Tooth of Time at
sunrise. The troop also climbed Urraca
Mesa – which, according to local lore, is
haunted. During their descent, they en-
countered a section of forest completely
blackened by a recent wildfire and they
were forced to “bushwhack” through
some fire breaks littered with bleached
animal bones and berms during a thun-
derstorm to find their way to that eve-
ning’s staff camp at Abreu — hence the
“haunted” reputation of the mesa, which
certainly left its mark on Troop 174.

The troop hiked over 60 miles with
an elevation range of 6,500 to just under
11,000 feet. The troop also participated
in a conservation project that consisted
of clearing brush and building slash piles
to prevent future forest fires. Philmont
Scout Ranch is the premier high adven-
ture camp for the Boy Scouts of America
and consists of 140,177 acres of wilder-
ness.

Olivia and Bentley from the SPCA in
2015 and 2016. Olivia recently passed
due to cancer, so they named their new
business’truck after her in her honor.

“It was heart breaking to have a pet
and member of the family for such a
short time, but we were so thankful that
we had that time with her,”said Ed.

After adopting Olivia in 2015, the
Lachtermans were interested in adopt-

SPCA volunteers, Olivia picked Bentley
out, they played together, and then went
home as a family.

“We wanted to give a little thank you
and payback to the SPCA for the love
they give to the animals because it doesn’t
end at the door,it goes home with the an-

Ed also added that the animals would
likely not be cared for the way they are

To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can
appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using
the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
