than 50 years in the original Greek-re- -Susan Henry

vival farmhouse that once belonged to her

great-aunt.

“ e rst Mead arrived in 1776—that was Enoch Mead and his wife Jemima, who settled

in Waccabuc,” said Maureen Koehl, Lewisboro Town Historian. “ e Meads basically just

bought up all that property; for the other Meads, it started basically as [a destination] for

their summer houses, coming up from Brooklyn and the city—and as time went by, the

farms developed and one of them decided to build a hotel on the lake, which burned down

in the 1890s. Also, there was the Lake Waccabuc Inn, which is now Waccabuc Country Club

and golf course,” she added.

For Susan Henry, who was born in Mount Kisco and grew up in Waccabuc (her grandfa-

ther was married to a member of the Mead family), her hometown is a place of simple and

rural beauty. During her childhood, the majority of people in Waccabuc were those on vaca-

tion or summer retreats—hunting, shing, swimming, boating or just escaping the city—

with few year-round residents, according to Henry. at changed with the development of

Interstate 684 and an expanded Metro North train route. But back then, young Susan felt

like she had Waccabuc all to herself.

“My father, Earl Smith, had a dairy farm and there were very few children here when we

were growing up; the farm was a big attraction for us. I had a pony—and we had to gure

out ways to amuse ourselves,” she said. She recalls attending the one-room schoolhouse on

Schoolhouse Road and happily transferring to the then newly-built Lewisboro Elementary

School and later spending two years at Katonah High School (presently Katonah Elemen-

tary School).

After living in New York City for some time, she and her husband Jim, a lawyer, decided

to make a permanent move to raise their three children back in Waccabuc. It was quite an

undertaking, Susan explained, as the home was vacant and in need of repair. Built in 1820,

the family home is known as “ e Homestead,” and is listed on the National Register of

Historic Places. With original architectural details and period furniture, walking into the

house feels like a step back in time and the couple has deliberately kept it that way.

“We had rooms repainted, but nothing was really changed,” she said. Over the years, the

couple created lush gardens and a special grape vineyard for Jim’s winemaking.

e historic district of Waccabuc, also on the National Register of Historic places, in-

cludes the Old Field Preserve, Mead Memorial Chapel and the quaint Post O ce building.

In 1981, Susan Henry helped start the Waccabuc Landowners Council, a group of residents

who endeavor to maintain the character of the hamlet and to foster community involvement;

their e orts continue today. She is also a founding director of Westchester Land Trust, an

organization that preserves land and protects and enhances natural resources in the com-

munity.

Plenty of prominent people have been attracted to the hamlet’s secluded elegance and

bucolic setting. Famously, in 1956, days after their civil ceremony in White Plains, Marilyn

Monroe and playwright Arthur Miller held a ceremony at the home of Miller’s literary agent

in Waccabuc. Other personalities who have called Waccabuc home include actress Gwyneth

Paltrow, chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, musician Keith Richards and rapper Sean Combs.

e last of the Mead family still living in Waccabuc, Susan Henry believes that her resi-

dence in the beloved 10597 area code has been an ideal location.

“If you come o Route 35 and onto Mead Street, the rst thing you see is a eld on the

right and on the left is a cemetery; the houses are fairly close to the road and not many long

driveways—keep going up to the chapel. It is just a good place to be; not too remote, close

enough to everything,” she said.
