recently completed is a Japanese teahouse.

Massaro stays on the island in the summer in the
main house. His family visits and they have gath-

built is not lived in but has become “sort of like a
museum.”
He talked about the challenges of having to
obtain permits and carrying supplies to build the
house during the winter.

“I [researched] how thick ice has to be to carry
heavy material,” he said. “It was January, and the ice
was 30 inches thick. We took out the wood, a lot of
gravel, sand, some concrete, a backhoe and excava-
tor, and two six-wheeled trucks across the ice.”

It is that sort of perseverance that has driven
Massaro’s success and, he noted, that is the main
theme of his book.

“It’s an impossible road, but I don’t care how

said. “ is is a story of a boy who had no future in

Massaro said his mother helped him study for
school. ey didn’t know he had a learning disabil-

prevented him from trying new things.

“I created a successful method of trying and try-

tried enough ‘stupid, crazy, what’s-wrong-with-you’
