Sea lions haul out in large colonies on rocks and sandy shores on the islands. They move
into the water to feed and cool off as need.

WHY THEY MATTER ?

The sea lion is the most common mammal in the Galapagos.

Threats

Introduced species , such as dogs , carry diseases that can spread to sea lions. They
are vulnerable to the effects of climate change on ocean currents , which impacts their
fish prey abundance. They are also victims of bycatch in fisheries.

Sea lions often rest aboard fishing boats , sometimes causing the boats to sink. Fishermen try to
prevent them from coming aboard by putting up barbwire as a barrier , but this causes severe
injuries to the sea lions.

So , what WWF is doing ?
- Support a project on San Cristobal Island that built and installed two floating bases for sea lions to
rest on and a “primary care nursery” for sea lions and other species.

Good morning to my teacher and fellow friends. I’m here today to talk to you about the Sea Lion.

The sea lion is the most common mammal in the Galapagos. Its scientific name is Zalophus
wollebaeki. Its weight is around 400 pounds and has 6 feet long. Sea lion is pinnipeds characterized by
external ear flaps , long foreflippers and the ability to walk on all fours , short , thick hair.

Sea lion is strong swimmer that can reach speeds of nearly 20 miles per hour in the water. They swim
using their long foreflippers to generate power and their hind flippers to steer. Sea lion hunts underwater
and can dives to depths of 300 meters.

Actually , ordinary people like us can also make a difference. We can take action such as organizing
seminar to speak up for species and place through WWF’s Action centre. Besides , we also can make a
symbolic sea lion adoption to help save some of the world’s most endangered animals from extinction
and support WWF’s conversation efforts.
