MODERATOR INTRODUCTION
Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention. Good evening to all of you. Welcome to the forum. My name is Nurul
Fatihah, your moderator for today’s forum. Our discussion for today is about “Fully Open School, Not Window Dressing”. I am
sure that every one of us has our own opinion on this topic. But before we proceed to our forum, I would like to introduce our
panelists today. Our first panelist is Miss Afifah, a representative from Ministry of Education, Miss Dayana, the principal of
SMK Tengku Cempaka, Miss Sarah who is representative from Parent-Teacher Association (PTA/PIBG), Miss Fatanah, a
representative teacher from SMK Tengku Cempaka, and our last panel is Miss Amni, a student of SMK Tengku Cempaka.
Before we start our forum in detail, let me explain about our topic today. As we face this COVID-19 pandemic, up to 94
percent of students around the world have been out of school due to school closures. As a temporary solution, several
countries and schools have shifted to online learning during school closures. However, in many countries, this is not practical
because less than half of households in low- and middle-income nations have access to the internet. There is some
disagreement over online learning, to the point where some argue that going to school seems to be much better than online
learning. Therefore, in today’s forum, we will discuss the importance of opening schools and how it may affect students,
either positively or negatively. So, my question is,what do you think about the school opening?
Why don’t you tell us, Miss Afifah?
DISCUSSION BY PANELIST
MODERATOR'S CONCLUSION
I won't dispute that opening schools can improve the performance of the students in terms of social interaction and
academic achievement. This is due to the fact that it enables all students to be lifelong learners and fully develop their skills
and competences. Therefore, able to produce excellent graduates as desired by the country, who perform not only
academically but holistically and in every aspect. Ladies and gentlemen, we have discussed the negative and positive
effects of opening school fully from several perspectives. To sum it up, everyone has their own point of view regarding this
topic. I will end our forum discussion with thanks to all the panelists for their participation in today's discussion, as well as
the audience for joining. Thank you so much for your time. Take care until the next time.

SUMMARY OF ELC 501
This subject of English for Critical Academic Reading (ELC 501) has taught me so many lessons throughout the period of 14
weeks. Firstly, on how to determine contextual cues , interpreting the meaning of words, acknowledging topic, main ideas,
implied main idea, stated main idea, types of supporting detail, fact and opinion, understanding inductive and deductive
reasoning, highlighting and applying critical reading skills in reasoning through inference, drawing conclusions, and
examining language when evaluating an argument.
In terms of our task, students need to do a pair work assignment on article review analysis in which we agree or disagree
with the author of the chosen article. This assists students in determining the author's goal, tone, point of view, intended
audience, and issue in an argument. Aside from that, students have a group task, which is a forum debate among group
members. The forum was conducted in two methods that can help us: pre-recorded and live. Furthermore, each group
member will complete a group portfolio as well as an individual portfolio.
