INTRODUCTION

Then there was this headline recently: “CDC Blatantly Lied In Congressional Hearings About
Vaccine Safety” and I asked myself why it was that people still generally either didn’t get what
was really going on ... or they got it but didn’t want to take it to its logical conclusion.

Then I did an interview with a radio station personality here in Auckland in which I encountered
(I spent an hour recording the session) a fairly bright man as men go these days – but he was a typical
careerist who had surrendered his mind to the corporation.

He was still (!!) stuck in the bin Laden did 9/11 meme and nothing that I said (or sent him later) could
budge him from his “position”.

Facts? We don’t need no stinkin’ facts.

And then it dawned on me once again (being a slow learner, mostly thanks to my desire to see the best
in people, which means I am still surprised when I encounter how absolutely closed most careerists, aca-
demics and many others have become): People close down because to wake up and smell the stench of
our collective acquiescence is simply too much to handle.

Some of my relatives and former friends have likewise gone to the great Consensus in the Sky, preferring
not to think, and if challenged, to close down even more, rather than engage in what used to be known
as “rational discourse”.

So this is how it ends, wrote TS Eliot, the great poet no one reads any more, because no one reads any-
thing anymore… So this is how it ends, he wrote, “not with a bang but a whimper.”

This may not be the end of history, but it certainly the end of a turbulent but nevertheless interesting
few millennia, in which there were many who loved learning because it often brought philosophy and
perspective and perhaps, eventually, wisdom, and they loved the path to wisdom because it nurtured a
reverance for truth.

“For beauty is truth, truth beauty,” wrote John Keats, another poet nobody reads any more, but the ab-
sence of both as a central tenet of civilisation means that that particular civilisation is coming to a close.

It is up to the remnant to keep Keats and Eliot and other perceptive wisdom seekers alive. In the mean-
time, there are great artists like Steve Cutts (below)
