The Vitruvian Man (also known as Le proporzioni del corpo umano secondo
Vitruvio, lit. 'the proportions of the human form according to Vitruvius') is a
design created in 1490 by the Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci. It comes with
comments based on the work of Roman architect Vitruvius. The ink on paper
picture represents a guy in two superimposed poses, arms and legs apart, and
written in a circle and square.
Leonardo's ideal human body proportions are depicted in the picture. Its
inscription in a square and a circle is based on a description in Book III of the
ancient Roman architect Vitruvius' work De architectura.

on the evolution of Western art,
particularly in regard to Renaissance
concepts of humanism and naturalism.

Along with his adversary and elder
contemporary, Leonardo da Vinci, he is

sometimes regarded as the ideal
Renaissance man. Michelangelo is one of
the best-documented painters of the 16th
century, thanks to the sheer number of

surviving letters, drawings, and
reminiscences, and some experts have
hailed him as the most talented artist of

his day.

Before the age of thirty, he sculpted two
of his most famous masterpieces, the

Pietà and David. Despite his disdain for
painting, he painted two of the most
famous murals in Western art history:
images from Genesis on the ceiling of
Rome's Sistine Chapel and The Last
Judgment on its altar wall. His
Laurentian Library design was a

forerunner of Mannerism architecture.

The Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508 - 1512)
by Michelangelo

The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone
work of High Renaissance art. The ceiling is that of the Sistine Chapel, the large papal chapel
built within the Vatican between 1477 and 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV, for whom the chapel is
named.
Nine episodes from the Book of Genesis, including the famed Creation of Adam, are central to
the ceiling artwork. The intricate design comprises numerous sets of individual individuals,
both dressed and naked, allowing Michelangelo to completely display his expertise in
producing a great range of positions for the human form and serving as an incredibly
important pattern book of models for other painters ever since. The ceiling has been repaired
several times, the most recent being in the late twentieth century.
