Mary and her mother have a beautiful flowery garden. Her mother plants
many types of flower in their garden. Every evening, Mary and her
mother will go to the garden and plants more and more flowers. When
Mary was on her own, she likes to stroll around the flowers and sing.
One evening, while Mary was strolling around the flowers, she saw
something. Suddenly, she came running inside her house and calls her
mother.
"Mummy, Mummy!" she called. "Someone has been in our garden.
They've hung up a little lamp on the leaves and then forgotten to take it
down again. Come mummy, hurry!"
Mary and her mother went out to the garden to see the little lamp. They
see something hanging on the leaves and it did look like a little green
lantern with specks of gold in it.
"Dear me!" said her mother . "It's a chrysalis."
"Chrysalis" was a new word for Mary. She liked it because it was such a
rich, unusual word. She said it twice, to enjoy the sound of it. “What's a
chrysalis, Mummy?“
"It's a ________ mmm" said mother.
Then she stopped and laughed. "You must wait and see. You may have
to wait for a while but you will find out."
For a few days Mary went to look at the chrysalis every morning, but it
was not very interesting. It just hung there, always in the same place not
changing at all.
Then, one day, at last she did find something different. The chrysalis was
changing colour. It was getting darker.
The chrysalis turned black. Somewhere in it Mary could see a splash of
red. What was the chrysalis up to?
On a warm sunny day, Mary looked into her garden and the chrysalis
was gone. Hmm.. no, not quite gone, but quite changed. It had split open
and was nothing but a little empty shape hanging from the leaves.
Clinging to it with six long black legs was a new butterfly with red and
black wings.
Slowly it opened and shut its wings. Mary was able to see the wonderful
bright pattern inside them. Her mother came to look too.
"You see," she said, It's a butterfly.
All the time the chrysalis hung here, it was inside then turning into a
butterfly. Now it has broken out of the chrysalis and is ready to fly off and
enjoy the summer. Its wings will soon be strong enough.“
As her mother spoke, the butterfly fluttered cheerfully around the flower
bed.
After then, Mary and her mother keep planting more and more flowers.
Their garden became so fresh, beautiful and colourful. Lots of
butterflies came there and flutter around the flowers. Mary and her
mother were so happy because they had a wonderful garden.
