The Lusitania Times 30 June 2023

N E W S L E T T E R The Lusitania Times

I hope that you’re all keeping warm as the winter wind chill begins to bite! Weather watchers tell me that a cold winter is needed for summer rains so, assuming that is even half true, let’s bear up with the cooler children have proven their worth and we appreciate your buy in on this project. The annual Conference of Heads of Independent Schools of Zimbabwe (CHISZ) was held recently where member schools meet to exchange views on matters of common interest. This year the focal point was “Transformational Thinking” in key areas such as leadership, technology, parenting, substance abuse, sport and technology in the classroom. I am pleased to say that here at Lusitania, we are very forward thinking from what came out of the various conference addresses. Our core mission and motivation remains to deliver a world class education as well as extensive sporting and cultural opportunities that equip our pupils excellently for their next step, that being senior school. Our Grade 7s are all well respected and sought after by major ATS member senior schools in Harare and the province. Many of our alumni go on to become school leaders and captains year after year so we can be very proud of this. A note of caution was sounded on the growing threat of various forms of substance abuse in our society at large and the need for schools to be at the forefront in educating young people and monitoring this global challenge. As parents, please and ensure that you know what your children are doing and whom they are with when not under your direct gaze. The best practice is to talk to your children openly and keep them informed because this can be a topic that is taboo but this makes if something happens. The school does its best but it does not have reach after school: you, as parents, do. Let’s work together on this and any other form of abuse. Dear Parents and Guardians On Saturday 1st July the annual CHISZ Common Assessment Paper will be written by all pupils graduating to senior schools of their choice in 2024. Unlike in the past this assessment is not an entrance test that your child has to “pass” in order to be offered a place. It is more a form of measuring academic ability so that in Form 1 pupils’ abilities are better managed and class groupings / remedial needs known in advance. Reassure your child that it is not an examination as such though they should, as they always do, aim to do their best. There is no intention of putting young children under enormous pressure to produce outcomes that will be rated or compared with others either positively or negatively. This is a major part of “transformational” thinking – i.e., that the measure of a pupil is much more than academic, it includes their willingness to participate in all that the school offers. As at Lusitania, it is important that our pupils engage in learning, participating, competing and discovering in preparation for life after people are valued highly as modern life is about the ability to connect and communicate above merely producing stunning academic results at the exclusion of everything else. Once again, thank you for your continued support of both the school and your children. Lusitania thrives on this positive community, family-based spirit. Dear Parents / Guardians, health. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the parents who attended our Parent workshop last week. The lively discussions on the role of parents and educators in the age of emerging technologies and the evolving role of parents in supporting their child’s education in the 21st century were truly enlightening. We truly appreciate your commitment to your children’s education. We also acknowledge and appreciate those who attended their child’s consultation. Your involvement in your child’s education journey is invaluable, and we appreciate the time and effort you took to discuss their progress. Your thriving academic environment. Moving ahead, we would like to remind you that the midyear examinations are scheduled to commence next week, the 3rd of July, and will end on the 12th of July. This is a crucial assessment period for our students, and we encourage them to make the most of their preparation time. Please ensure your child is well-rested, wellnourished, and equipped with the necessary materials to perform their best during the exams. We encourage you to support them as they prepare for these crucial assessments. We are thrilled to announce that our students have excelled in the National Institute Allied Arts competitions, earning impressive grades in the solos and duo poetry categories. We commend them for their dedication, hard work and artistic talents. We are also proud to announce the remarkable achievements of our students in various sports activities. Our students have excelled in hockey, soccer, netball, and chess games, displaying exceptional skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Some have been chosen to represent the province in hockey and soccer. We applaud their efforts and encourage them to pursue their passions enthusiastically and determinedly. This is a special mention to our Grade 7 students sitting for their Common Assessment paper this Saturday. they have prepared diligently. Good luck, Grade 7s! We believe in your potential to excel. In other news, some of our students will embark on a cultural exchange program in India to meet other students from different parts of the world. This program will provide them with a unique opportunity to learn about different cultures, broaden their horizons, and foster global citizenship. We appreciate the support of the parents in making this experience possible for our students. We are excited to invite all parents to our ECD sports day this Friday and the infants’ sports day next Friday. Seeing our youngest students demonstrate their athletic skills is always a joy; your support would mean the world to them. Remember to secure your tickets for our annual school play, ‘Tut Tut’, which will be held in three weeks. Our Performing Arts department has worked tirelessly to make this memorable. Our thrift shop will be open next Friday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, at a designated place by the school hall. All unclaimed lost and found items will be on sale, so do not miss this opportunity to reclaim lost items or make a bargain purchase!
