ENGAGE.
CULTIVATE.
INSPIRE.

You aren't here by mistake. At any given
moment, in any given day, home
education can feel like a mistake.
Sometimes the tone of voice is a
mistake. Sometimes the book choice is a
mistake. Sometimes your child's
struggles can feel like some type of epic
mistake.
I assure you, they are not. Not one
challenge- not one moment, not
even the constant encounters with
sin- are a mistake.
Education is an atmosphere because the
Holy Spirit is always present to
correct, encourage, comfort, and
direct. Education is a discipline because
it's absolutely not easy and requires
recommitment after recommitment.
Education is life because it builds and
grows, redeems and restores.
You may be very sure that you weren't
made for this. But, friend, let me assure
you that the One who made you isn't
done with you yet.

In Christ,
Erin Cox

Get to Know
your Team

You've probably already seen my face a time or two,
but I'm Erin! I'm the founder of The Gentle + Classical
Press, working alongside my husband, Danny, and our
4 children- Isabella, Kali, Daxton, and Kolton.

This little press was born out of grief, God-given
purpose, and a passionate pursuit of "the best" for our
own children.

We've homeschooled for just over a decade, always
creating our unique blend of Charlotte Mason,
classical education, unit studies, and a pinch and dash
of whatever else seemed to work.

In our home, we face sin daily, don't let being
"unqualified" stop us, work hard, play hard, laugh
hard, shout loud, and follow what God has called us to
do... even when it makes no sense to our flesh. We take
risks while always looking to the ancient paths to
guide our next steps.

We have about 0.1% of things "figured out," but we are
willing to do the hard work of obeying anyway... which
is how The Gentle + Classical press was born.

Thank you for joining us, trusting us, and jumping in
with both feet alongside us.

Useful Tools

You don't have to figure this out all by yourself.
Home education materials are a big deal-
spiritually, emotionally, and financially.

Let us give you a few easy tools for processing

the desires you have for your child's education. We

will also provide you with some basic useful
checklists for shopping and planning your days.

6 Steps to Success

Sometimes, we're thrown into home education without much warning. That may be due to a
variety of circumstances, but it's not unfair to say, sometimes homeschooling chooses US rather
than the other way around. The following 6 steps are simple, but each is significant in your
journey. Use the following pages to journal through these steps so you have a reference to go back
to on the hard days.

Questions & Answers
Express Yo'Self

01 PRAY
As you spend time in God's Word, seeking His will, direction,
and peace, jot down any scipture, words, or ideas He
impresses upon your heart.

02 ENVISION
We have hopes and dreams for our children. Laying ALL
comparison and fears aside, if you weren't scared, what would
you hope and dream for your child's education? Write a few
key words here.

03 UNPACK
We all have fear, preconceived notions, and baggage to
unpack. Home education is no place for anxiety or
comparison. What are your deepest fears? Write them here,
give them to the Lord, and don't come back and get them.

04 START
05 Starting is the hardest part. It's so "official" and intimidating.
So, just do it. Get it over with. Write down a book to read, a
craft to do, and a walk to visit in this space. Just pick
anything. It doesn't matter. All that matters is "doing"... not
"doing it perfectly."

LEARN
There are over a dozen educational philosophies and twenty times
that many books on the subject. It's daunting! You don't have to be a
pro, but it's wise to always seek more knowledge for yourself about
how children learn. Write down the names of two philosophies
you've heard of here, then pick ONE book about each. Don't look
any further until you've read these selections.

06 ENJOY The Gentle + Classical Press
This part is easy when you've done the prep work. Once you
have a general idea of your philosophy (knowing that your pg. 09 ShopGentleClassical.com
home education views will ALWAYS evolve over time), you
can jot down a few favorite programs for your family. We
made the first note for you ;)

YUCK zones and need a reboot. Sometimes, it gets so bad we want to go running for the hills. Often, that's not a
real option (though, if you CAN take a spiritual retreat alone, I highly recommend it!). Instead, try this tried-and-

One Week Morning Challenge

With enough fortitude, and the right mindset, we can create our own helpful habits in just a few days. Atomic Habits is
a favorite book, and one key to new habit formation is to think of yourself in terms of already BEING the person who
you're wanting to become. If you're wanting to conquer your mornings, be sure to think of yourself as an "early,
productive riser!"

01 Set your alarm for the time that you need to be awake for your BEST day. Be reasonable, and if you still
aren't sleeping through the night due to waking children, skip this step. Your only task for the first day is
to GET UP at this time. Absolutely nothing more.

02 Set your alarm and rise like Day 1.
Grab your Bible. Spend 5 minutes asking for God's hand upon your day, praising Him, and reading just 1-2
lines of scripture. Meditate on these throughout your day.

03 Set your alarm and rise like Day 1. Bible time like Day 2.
After your Bible time, gently stretch. This isn't about "exercise" but about waking your body fully. Simply
do 3-5 gentle stretches.

04 Set your alarm and rise, Bible time, and simple stretches.
After your stretches, eat a wholesome breakfast. Take the time to fuel your body for the day *unless you
do intermittent fasting. Sip a warm drink of your preference with intentionality and appreciation.

05 Set your alarm and rise, Bible time, simple stretches, breakfast and a warm drink.
Place one single load of laundry into the washer. This single load is the only one you'll touch all day. Your
only laundry goal is to get this ONE load washed, dried, and put away during the course of your day.

06 Set your alarm and rise, Bible time, simple stretches, breakfast and a warm drink, and load the laundry.
Walk outside. If you have chickens or other livestock, this might be a great time to do chores. If not, simply
stand outside or walk around for 10 minutes enjoying the fresh morning air.

07 Set your alarm and rise, Bible time, simple stretches, breakfast and a warm drink, load the laundry, and
walk outside.
Hug each of your children. Look them in the eyes, tell them something you uniquely appreciate about
them, and give them a long, warm, gentle hug.

Artist/Music Study:

Which subjects of curriculum you need will vary greatly by age! Your
kindergarten student does not need a spelling or history curriculum. You may
also choose not to study a foreign language until later (or not at all).

PRESCHOOL: We recommend reading/phonics EXPOSURE, math games, exposure to foreign language, with
much literature, Bible, and nature exploration. Furthermore, we begin exposure to art and music masters along
with ample, free, open-ended art explorations. In preschool, we follow the child's lead and developmental
readiness, never making "school" feel formal, rigid, or restrictive.

KINDERGARTEN: We recommend beginning formal math and reading instruction, once you feel your child is
willing AND physically/developmentally ready. We also introduce geography and cultural studies in
kindergarten as well.

FIRST GRADE+: We recommend beginning grammar instruction alongside spelling instruction and history.
This is also the point in which we introduce a more formal, consistent foreign language program. We continue
with those subjects through the years, introducing subjects like logic and worldview in middle and high school.

In preschool through first grade, we learn basic anatomy as well as spend a great deal of time studying nature for our
science component.

SWOT Curriculum Analysis

A SWOT Analysis is another great evaluation or decision making tool. Threats may be a little harsh, but think of it
more as challenges. What strengths does this particular program have? What areas might it be weak? Does it present
opportunities that others may not? And what challenges (i.e. "threats") could I see myself facing if I choose it?

You may be all-together confused or overwhelmed by what a memory statement even IS and how to use them. I'm glad you asked!
Memory statements fill the pages of all Gentle + Classical programs, so I want to make sure you understand WHAT they are and how to
implement them in your homeschool!

Memory statements are an idea that seems to have sprung from the more modern ideas of classical education and have been made popular
by a popular community-based curriculum program. However, if we dig more deeply, we find that the notion of a “memory statement” is
rooted in Charlotte Mason and true (historical) classical education.

In the Charlotte Mason philosophy, we simply refer to them as recitations:

“Recitation and committing to memory are not necessarily the same thing, and it is well to store a
child’s memory with a good deal of poetry, learnt without labour…. attempt only a little, and let the
poems the child learns be simple and within the range of his own thought and imaginations.” -
Charlotte Mason

While we call them “memory statements,” our aim is not actual memorization. We could easily call them “memory recitations” or simply
“recitations.” These statements represent an opportunity to dwell on a beautiful thought and store them up inside of our hearts. Memory
statements are an opportunity to “see and say beauty” (as outlined in The Gentle + Classical Preschool 2nd edition- coming June 2021).
We recite poetry, nursery rhymes, scripture, catechism, virtue definitions, and math facts which are beautiful, meaningful reflections of
God, and thusly plant true, good, and beautiful notions into hearts and minds.

So the question is- should we “memorize” these recitations? The answer lies in your own personal philosophy. You will find that scripture
and catechisms (basic questions and answers about our Christian faith or an early apologetics foundation, if you will) are the most
beautiful of all of our recitations and thusly are recited for several weeks to ensure that over time, they are truly written on our hearts.

Other recitations like counting to 10 are recited for weeks on end, as they reflect God’s order and are fundamental to early math literacy.
Recitations like the “About Me” or “Manners, Hygiene, and Safety” (found in The Gentle + Classical Preschool and Gentle + Classical
Primer) are statements that give words to concepts your child is already experiencing in their life. Giving words to concepts our children
are experiencing is an important part of our job, as this equips them with the proper language to express their own ideas, needs, or
experiences.

Furthermore, the memory statements included in our Gentle + Classical Nature program give our children proper names for items in
nature and for the systems they observe in the world around them, granting them a greater understanding of self, and thusly the world at
large.

How do I implement memory statements?

Super simple! Say a short portion of the statement to your child and have them “say it back” or “repeat after me”- whichever they seem to
understand. If your child is very young, you might model this behavior with another child or adult to help them understand what “say it
back” means, though most children are natural little parrots.

If your child is 2-3 years old, you might keep the “portions” that you expect them to say back to 2-word sections, slowly working through
the full statement. You might also shorten any statements as needed. Example in catechism: Rather than, “What else did God make? God
made all things,” feel free to say, “What else did God make? Everything (or all things).”

As your child gets older and you work on more recitations, you’ll find their ability to attend and repeat back lengthens. Expect them to be
able to “repeat back” one word for every year of age. My 5-year-old can repeat back a 5-7 word statement after hearing it once. My 3-year-
old can generally repeat back 3-5 words at a time.

All in all, don’t let this concept fool you. It’s more simple than it sounds but the simplicity does NOT mean that it isn’t exceedingly
valuable. We are writing TRUTH upon hearts, stretching imaginations, exercising their working memories, helping them develop more
advanced language skills, facilitating proper speech and cadence, and SO much more.

Terms & Conditions

Below you'll find our shipping, refund, and other policies. You can also find these linked at ShopGentleClassical.com

SHIPPING POLICIES

Shipping options are shown at checkout and include insurance.
Please be aware that if you choose USPS Media Mail that these shipments are currently taking upwards of 3 weeks to
arrive with little to no accurate tracking information.
Due to COVID-related delays, the USPS is NOT scanning items as they are received and tracking is unreliable and
extremely limited. Furthermore, all USPS modes are taking up to 2x-3x their normal time to be delivered. If you choose
USPS Media Mail, I cannot be held liable for delays. I will not act on a delay (with refund or replacement) until your
item has been in the carrier’s hands for 40 days.
If your product is received DAMAGED, I will immediately ship you a new product via UPS Ground. I will then ask you
to help me in fulfilling the requirements for an insurance claim, including taking pictures and sending me any
undamaged items back. (I will supply the box and shipping fees.)
If your product is NOT delivered (and it says it was), I will immediately ship out a replacement order so long as it’s in
stock. You also have the option to request a refund at this time. I will also ask you to verify with the USPS or UPS to
complete the claim and participate in whatever way they ask to ensure the claim is paid.
If your product has been in the USPS system for 40 days and has NOT been scanned or received, you may request a
refund or a replacement which I will send to you via UPS Ground (typically 3-5 days).
I will not offer a refund until your item has been in the carrier’s hands for at least 40 days for USPS.

REFUND POLICY

1.Digital products are NON-REFUNDABLE. However, we are happy to chat with you if you have concerns, have made a duplicate
purchase, want to upgrade your order to print or a bundle, or generally have other concerns.

2.Opened, printed/physical delivery materials cannot be returned.
3.Printed/Physical Teacher's Guides and Nature Collection Notebooks cannot be returned, unopened or otherwise. Those items are

available for free in their entirety in digital format. Please read and make sure you're happy with the program before making any
purchases.
4.For physical/print products, change of heart returns are discouraged, however completely unopened material may be returned with
a 30% re-stocking fee within 30 days of shipping. The customer will be required to package the item thoroughly and pay return
shipping, including insurance. Once the item is inspected and deemed in “like-new condition”, you will receive a refund at 70% of
the full price less any the value of any DIGITAL related content. If you purchase a Digital + Print product, your refund will be less
the cost of that digital product alone as digital products are non-refundable.
5.When returning a like-new/unopened product for a 70% refund, you MUST use a NEW box. The original box will be too weakened
by the original shipment to be used again. If a new box is not used, the box will be “returned to sender” unopened and no refund
will be processed.
6.If a return is received that is NOT like-new and has been opened (shrink-wrap removed), the purchaser can pay return shipping
BACK to themselves or receive a refund amount at the discretion of The Gentle + Classical Press. Items without shrink-wrapping or
with ANY DAMAGE that cannot be sold as new will receive no more than a 50% refund. These items cannot be re-sold. If you have
opened your items, please resale them as used rather than returning them.
7.If you are concerned about technical issues before purchase, please make sure that you have access to a desktop or laptop computer
upfront that can run Adobe Reader. Please make sure you can unzip or extract a zipped file as well. If those terms are new to you,
we encourage you to find a friend or family member to help with this aspect. YouTube is a great resource for “how to” technical
videos.
8.Please make sure that you have a way to print the products from my website. Many of our products are DIGITAL ONLY. Each
Bundle has a listing of the number of pages for that product in the product description.
9.We do NOT issue refunds for missed sales or unused coupon codes. Please be diligent upfront in placing your order. I personally
have missed out on a ton of sales and lost coupons. We DO understand the feeling but we have to have a firm boundary in place.
