8400 TopLine inverter drives integrate seamlessly with
servo technology
Lenze has designed a bus for easy communication between
axes
Hameln/Nuremberg, 22 November 2011
For communication between the axes of the 8400 TopLine inverter
drives, Lenze has added an axis bus to their functions, as well as
special function blocks for speed and angle synchronisation. It
works independently of, and in parallel with, the CAN system bus
which is part of the standard equipment. This further development is
primarily intended for the creation of electrical shafts for synchroni-
sation. The 8400 TopLine thus fits seamlessly into the typical appli-
cations of servo technology. Other functions of the 8400 TopLine
typical of servo technology are the support of SinCos absolute en-
coders (Hiperface®) and SinCos encoders.
The advantages of the axis bus result, to a large extent, from the simplic-
ity of configuration, the easier construction of lines and cascades, and the
optimum exploitation of the bus bandwidth through synchronisation at the

hardware level. Two fundamental topologies can be constructed using the
automatic axis bus system. In the first case, all drives in the network are
connected to the higher-level master controller. For their part, the axes
exchange data between themselves. An architecture in which only one
axis bus master acts as the link to the controller, on the other hand, is
appropriate when the controller only needs to supply a small amount of
information to the group of axes.
