Analyse Learners

Age: Year 3 (9 Years Old)

Classroom Size: 25 students

Cognitive Level: The class is a mixed-ability classroom consisting of a heterogenous group of pupils
with various levels of English language comprehension. There is a broad range of proficiency levels in
the classroom ranging from high proficiency pupils, to moderate and low proficiency pupils.

Socioeconomic Background: The pupils mainly consist of children living in the urban area with most of
the children belonging from higher socioeconomic communities and middle class families. Therefore,
most of the pupils are already exposed to and are accustomed to the various use of technologies and
electronic media such as social media, smartphones, laptops and television from their parents and
teachers.

Learning Preferences: Visual and auditory

Specific Competencies: Occupation is a general term that refers to someone’s job or profession. The
pupils are generally aware of common types of occupations that exist. However, some pupils might be
unaware of the specific terms for these occupations and the terms used to describe them in the English
language.

State Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. Answer at least 4 out of 6 comprehension questions based on occupations after reading the
text explicitly.

2. Answer at least 6 out of 10 true or false questions about occupations after reading the text
accurately.

3. Write the answers to 4 out of 6 comprehension questions based on occupations with the
correct usage of capital letters, full stops, and question marks accurately.

4. Write 3 simple sentences on occupations using the words given with the correct usage of

the pupils.

understanding of the lesson can be assessed.

SET INDUCTION

Materials: The material used in the set induction are flashcards. The flashcards contain pictures of
different types of occupations that will be introduced in the text. It works to arouse their interest as well
as providing the pupils with a preview of the topic.
Preview the technology, media, and materials : The teacher confirms that the pictures on the
flashcards correlate to the topic and the text that will be provided to the pupils. The teacher uploads the
flashcards on a Google Slide to ensure that pupils can view the flashcards easily.
Prepare the environment : The teacher ensures that the pupils are seated and ready to receive
instruction with minimal external and internal interference such as noise and distractions.
Provide the learning experience : The teacher writes down instructions for the pupils to take a look at

STEP 2

Materials : The material used in step 2 is an animated picture book in the form of a video. The video
contains the text that will be used in the lesson accompanied by moving illustrations to aid in
visualisation and further understanding of the main ideas and details of the text.
Preview the technology, media, and materials : The teacher needs to ensure that the animated
illustrations are well matched to the text of the story. The teacher also has to make sure that the audio
and visual of the video is in top quality conditions. The video also needs to be previewed to ensure
that the video can be played smoothly and to avoid disruption during the activity.

Prepare the environment : The teacher ensures that the pupils are seated and ready to receive
instruction with minimal external and internal interference such as noise and distractions.
Provide the learning experience : The video will work to encourage reading aloud amongst the
pupils. As they read through the text shown in the video, the audio will aid them in their reading as they
will read simultaneously while the video is playing. The audio in the video provides an accurate model
for reading with the proper pronunciation. The pupils will then upload a recording of them reading the
text as the video is playing on the Google Form provided.

STEP 3

Material: The material used in step 3 is a worksheet presented in a Google Form. The Google Form
will include 6 comprehension questions as well as 3 writing exercises for the students to answer.
Preview the technology, media, and materials : The teacher has to confirm that the Google Form
link is distributed to the students before the step is carried out.
Prepare the environment : The teacher ensures that the pupils are seated and ready to receive

Provide the learning experience : The learning experience provided in this step is centred around
answering comprehension questions and writing exercises. The students will answer the questions in

Provide the learning experience : The learning process in the closure is learner-centred. Pupils are
required to answer the questions in the quiz to assess their understanding of the lesson as well as
recap what they have learned. The use of Kahoot! also encourages motivation amongst the pupils.

SET INDUCTION
1. The pupils are shown 4 flashcards, each containing pictures of people dressed for different

occupations:
- Firefighter
- Chef
- Dentist
- Teacher
2. Pupils take some time to fully take in the details of the pictures.
3. Pupils think of how the pictures are linked to one another (What do these pictures have in
common? What are the similarities between the pictures?).
4. Pupils write down their answers and replies to the flashcards in the Padlet provided.

STEP 1
1. The pupils will play a short game on TinyTap which will work to arouse their interest and keep

them motivated.
2. Pupils are given pictures that are related to the text they will be reading. There will be several

pictures that can be connected to the other pictures:
- Firefighter - Firetruck
- Chef - Knife and cutting board
- Teacher - Chalkboard
- Dentist - Teeth
3. Pupils match the pictures that can be associated with the other pictures.
4. The pupils' ability to match images that can be associated with one another will be tested using
the game.
5. Pupils will take a screenshot of their results and upload it to the Padlet provided.

STEP 2
1. Pupils watch an animated picture book in the form of a video. The video will contain the text they

are to read accompanied by audio.
2. Pupils read the text aloud while the video is playing. The audio provides a model of fluent,

accurate and expressive reading.
3. Pupils will upload the recording of them reading the text while the audio is playing into the Google

Form provided.

STEP 3

1. Pupils answer the comprehension questions given in the Google Form provided to them based on
the text that has been read.

2. Pupils write 6 simple sentences based on the words provided in the Google Form provided to
them. The words provided include the vocabulary encountered in the reading activity.

3. Pupils' understanding of the text they have read will be assessed by their answers written in the
Google Form.

4. Pupils’ answers will be recorded in the Google Form.

CLOSURE
1. Pupils answer true and false questions about the lesson in a Kahoot! quiz.
2. The Kahoot! Quiz results are used to assess the pupils' understanding of the lesson.
3. Pupils’ answers will be recorded in Kahoot!

Evaluate and Revise

STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT :
● Pupils can answer at least 4 out of 6 comprehension questions on occupations based on the text

correctly after reading the text in the video.
