寓言故事 一鳴驚人

戰國時齊國有位淳
一 于髡，個子矮小，十

人 分滑稽並且善於辯
論。所以，每次出
使到其他諸侯的
領土上，從來沒有受過屈辱。
當時齊威王每天沉溺在飲酒作樂、荒
廢朝政的日子，可是卻沒有人敢進諫。淳
于髡知道齊王喜歡猜謎，便說：「我們國

In the Warring States period, there was a small and funny looking man named Chunyu Kun. He
was an eloquent and persuasive speaker. He skillfully advised the king on many occasions and
successfully went to many states as an envoy.
At that time, King Qi Wei didn’t pay any attention to governing his country. He filled his days with
worldly pleasures. No one dared to protest to King Qi Wei about what he has been doing.
Chunyu Kun knew that King Qi Wei enjoyed riddles, so he said to the king, “There is a big bird
living inside our kingdom and it’s been three years since it has flown or sung. Do you know what
kind of bird is it?”

飛也不叫，大王知道這是什麼鳥嗎？」 一
齊威王便回答：「這隻鳥啊！不飛則 鳴
驚
人

已，一飛沖天；不鳴則已，一鳴驚人」。

後來齊王改變作風，開始整頓國政，

不僅對各地官員賞罰分明，甚至將一些諸

侯以前搶奪的領土都給拿回來了。

After hearing this statement, King Qi Wei understood Chunyu Kun’s meaning, and replied, “It is a
bird that it either doesn’t fly at all or flies like a rocket; it either doesn’t make a sound or sings so
loud that it will startle everyone.”

After that, King Qi Wei changed the way he lived.
He started to manage the government, and he
did a very good job at it Not only did he give
out proper rewards and punishments to the
officials and ministers, but he also took
back unregistered land that were stolen by
the dukes before.

為，便有驚人的表現。

The meaning of this story is that one should stay silent and prepare oneself for the when he is ready
to stand center stage and show the world what he can do.

本句成語出自樂府詩集中的詩句

「桃生露井上，李樹生桃旁；蟲來嚙桃 李
代
桃
根，李樹代桃僵。樹木身相代，兄弟還相 僵

忘！」。

詩的大意是說：

井邊有一棵桃樹，桃樹的旁邊有一棵

李樹。

This proverb comes from a poem. There is a peach tree by a well, and a plum tree next to it. One
day, bugs come to gnaw at the root of the peach tree. Although plum tree was unharmed; it worried
so much about the peach tree that it eventually died. If even trees care about and love other trees,
why can’t people care about and love each other?

彼此頂替或代人受過的意思。

The story was used to describe the love between siblings. But the meaning was later changed to
describe how one helps another by taking on all the punishment and suffering onto himself/herself.
