State funding for Texas schools is based on average daily attendance. The classroom teacher is
extremely important in ensuring that our daily student attendance percentage remains high. It is our
number one job to create an atmosphere in which children WANT to come to school. Building and
maintaining positive relationships with students and parents/guardians is critical.

A. Attendance Procedures
a. School begins at 8:00 am. Students who arrive after school begins will be recorded as
tardy.
b. Attendance must be reported by 9:45 am each day.
c. If students ride a Keller bus or a daycare bus that is late, they will not be counted tardy.
An announcement will be made when a bus is late. Please hold attendance until the
students arrive.
d. After the third tardy or absence, the teacher must contact the parent/guardian to
demonstrate concern for the student and proactively avert a potential attendance issue.
The contact may be done by phone call or in-person and must be documented in
AWARE on the Parent/Teacher Conference form.
e. Every six weeks, teachers will be required to verify and sign attendance summaries.

B. Absence Excuse Notes
a. Make sure the child's name is on the note.
b. Please make sure the absence dates are on the note.
c. Put the homeroom teacher's name on the note.
d. Send (email) absence excuse notes from parents to the office daily. This includes any
emails from parents, etc.

C. Office Staff Responsibility
a. Code the attendance calendars with the correct entry and withdrawal codes after the
first day of school.
b. Receive calls from parents/guardians of students who are not present to verify student
absences and document information.
c. Process tardy students in a timely manner utilizing eSchool.
d. Send home the district attendance letter concerning excessive absences following
district guidelines.
e. Collaborate with the Assistant Principal regarding potential truancy concerns.

First Report of Injury

In case of an accident in which a student or staff member requires medical attention, the staff
member who witnessed the incident should remember the following:

A. See that the person is resting as comfortably as possible in the clinic or elsewhere (if the
injury is such that the person cannot be moved.)

B. Report the accident to the Principal and/or campus nurse.

a. Student Injury: The staff member reporting the injury will provide information for the
Incident Report Form available in the nurse’s clinic. Be certain to fill in all blanks on the
form. It is not necessary to fill out a form for minor injuries such as scratches and bruises.
Please be sure to include all witness names.

b. Staff Injury: All employee related injuries, regardless of severity, must be reported
immediately. An Incident Report Form must be completed as soon as possible.

Appraisals for Non-exempt staff will be conducted annually with feedback from supervising
staff members.

A. All staff members will be required to participate in professional goal setting at
the beginning of each year. Goals must be aligned to the campus vision,
mission, beliefs, and Campus Improvement Plan (CIP).

B. All evaluations will be done on-line in Eduphoria.

C. Job Description requirements will be reviewed and evaluated.

D. You will be asked to provide feedback in Eduphoria on your evaluation
document.

E. Summative conferences will be scheduled approximately in mid to late May.
You will receive a completed Evaluation form via e-mail no less than 5 working
days prior to your evaluation. This will give you time to look over your evaluation
and prepare for the summative.

F. A Letter of Reasonable Assurance will be provided for the following school year
when the appraisal is completed with a satisfactory or better rating, as
appropriate.

Teacher appraisals will be conducted using the state adopted Professional Development Appraisal
System (PDAS) system. The Principal and Assistant Principal will conduct formal evaluations
throughout the school year.

The state of Texas requires annual PDAS training before your administrator conducts a formal
evaluation of your classroom performance. You are required to complete your annual PDAS update
training during the week of August 18-22 under the direction of your campus principal. This year we
will be using online training. You will receive an email from RESPONSIVE LEARNING with your individual
link and password to enroll. The training is approximately one hour and can be completed from any
internet computer.

Please note the following important information concerning your PDAS:

A. All staff members will be required to participate in professional goal setting at the
beginning of each year. Goals must be aligned to the campus vision, mission, beliefs,
and Campus Improvement Plan (CIP).

B. All Teacher Self-Reports and Evaluations will be done in Eduphoria.

C. You will be asked to fill out a Teacher Self-Report, Parts I, II, and III through Eduphoria.
There are two different due dates for these reports. The items you include in these
reports are very important because they will be used to complete the Summative
Evaluation, so please take your time and include everything you would want the
administrators to know. The teacher self-report must be done on-line.

D. Most formal evaluations will take place in the fall semester. An administrator will
schedule a 45-minute observation time to visit your class and observe. Please do not
stress over the formal evaluation process. Do not conduct a performance, just do what
you do every day! We are a team and want you to feel comfortable with us in your
classroom. This process should be viewed as a professional development tool.

E. The administrator will return a copy of the first four domains (the domains concerning
the teaching and learning processes) via e-mail within 10 working days. Please save a
copy to your computer. You will need to sign your evaluation and return it to your
appraiser. You, or the administrator, may schedule an appointment to meet to discuss
the observation. You will receive a copy of your evaluation and may access it at any
time in Eduphoria.

F. You may invite an administrator to your classroom at any time to witness domain
objectives pertinent to your evaluation.

G. Domains 5 – 8 will be completed by the administrator with information given by you and
information noted throughout the year. Information in these domains will be discussed
during the Summative conferences.

H. Summative conferences will be scheduled approximately in mid to late May. You will
receive a completed PDAS Evaluation form via e-mail no less than 5 working days prior
to your evaluation. This will give you time to look over your evaluation and prepare for
the summative.

Special Education Operational Guidelines

Remember, all information concerning a student with disabilities is confidential and may not be
discussed with anyone except those with a legitimate educational interest in the student. Other
students with disabilities may not be identified or discussed during the ARD.

A. Be Prompt.

B. Be Positive. ---We know that the most important thing in each of our lives is our family. Be
aware of the parent’s needs and concerns. Consider what it must be like to be on "the other
side of the table" facing four or five educators. Always keep in mind that our purpose is to do
what is best for the child.

C. Be Prepared. ---Bring vital information and data about the student, such as strengths and
weaknesses, modifications being used, test performance, or other techniques, etc., about the
student.

a. Remember that this is not a parent/teacher conference. This is a business meeting. A
conference could be held before or after the ARD meeting during a pre-determined
time.

b. Placement recommendations are a group/ARD committee decision. We must follow
state guidelines considering the least restrictive environment.

c. Practice good meeting etiquette by not having “side conversations.” Your full attention
must be on the ARD meeting.

D. NO Surprises! ---Any previously known concerns or requests must be discussed with the ARD
administrator and diagnostician PRIOR to the ARD meeting.

E. Teachers are required by Federal Law to participate as a general education representative of
the ARD committee. It is important that teachers attend to conversation and offer input when
questions about curriculum, inclusion, and/or the dynamics of a general classroom setting
arise.

Teachers are on contract from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm and are expected to open classroom doors and
greet each child with a positive tone at 7:50 am each day.

A. Permission must be secured from the Principal or Assistant Principal if you must arrive late,
leave early, or leave anytime during the school day.

B. All appointments should be scheduled after 3:30 p.m.

C. Teachers leaving early, arriving late, or leaving during the instructional day is a privilege
that must be preapproved by an administrator. Please remember the following:

a. Coverage must be prearranged with another staff member;

b. Time missed may not exceed 30 minutes;

c. Requests may not be made on a regular basis (no more than 3 times a semester);

d. Remember to always sign out before leaving the building.

D. Permission is not required to leave during duty-free lunch, however staff must report back
to duty on-time. Staff are not permitted to eat lunch in the classroom during instructional
time.

E. Teachers are required to attend all after-school meetings.

a. Meetings will be scheduled on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 pm

b. Please do not schedule appointments or parent conferences during designated
staff or team meeting times unless an emergency arises. Routine doctor/dental
appointments are not an emergency.

F. Teacher Assistants and other paraprofessional staff must follow KISD policies regarding
earning/requesting Comp Time. Disciplinary action may result from the accrual of
unapproved comp time.

All staff will work collaboratively in assigned duty areas to make certain that students arrive and
dismiss safely. See Duty Roster for specific details. Please note that teachers may not have an
impromptu conference with parents during arrival/dismissal or during instruction times. This can be
avoided by asking parent to schedule a conference during designated conference times.

Arrival Procedures:
A. School will open at 7:30 am for morning students who arrive early. Students eating
breakfast will go directly to the cafeteria.

B. Students not eating breakfast will need to go directly to the appropriate holding location.

C. A “Bag-to-Go” is available for students who arrive by bus or who arrive late for breakfast.
Students will take their bag to the classroom and will be provided time to eat.

D. School staff will supervise each area. Students may enter classrooms at 7:50 am

Dismissal Procedures:
A. Students should not be released to anyone except their parents/guardians, or persons
authorized by their parents.

B. When a student must leave during the day, the parent/guardian must first come to the office
to sign him/her out.

C. Office personnel will call for the student by phone when appropriate.

D. Students must go home their usual way unless the teacher has received a signed note from
the parent/guardian, or if notified by office personnel. DO NOT take a child’s word!

E. Staff must escort students to all dismissal drop-off locations. Students should be supervised at
all times.

F. Staff may not leave duty until all students have been safely dismissed.

G. Students not picked up by 3:15 will be brought in the office by teacher and the teacher will
contact parent and see what estimated time of arrival is.

H. Students remaining after 3:30 pm will be supervised by office personnel.

a. Teachers may be contacted as needed to assist with supervision.
b. Late pick-up times will be documented.

I. Students remaining after 3:45 pm, will be supervised by an administrator. Administrator will

conference with parent/guardian regarding late pick-up, which will be documented in
AWARE. Administrator reserves the right to contact authorities (ex. police, CPS) when
necessary.

Assemblies and special programs are an integral part of instruction. Therefore, all students are
expected to be in attendance. Students should not be excluded due to behavior or other concerns.

A. All teachers must accompany their students to assemblies and remain with them
throughout the program. Teachers need to sit by their students to ensure proper
behavior.

B. Teachers should set high behavioral expectations for students and should remind
students of these expectations just prior to participating in an assembly.

C. Restroom breaks should be taken before or after the assembly.

D. Teachers should model good listening and audience manners during all assemblies,
therefore restraining from side talking and texting.

Access Control ID Cards are issued to full-time KISD employees by the KISD Security Department.
Individuals accepting custody of an Access Control ID Card will sign a statement acknowledging
responsibility for care, use and return upon retirement, change of title, resignation or separation from
the District.

 Staff must wear the district issued/approved Access Control ID Badge so that it is visible on
your person at all times while on KISD property. In addition, staff must wear their WRES specific
name tag to clearly identify them as employees.

 Staff must report loss, damage or theft of KISD Access Control ID Cards to an administrator
immediately.

 There will be a $25.00 replacement fee for all lost, stolen, or damaged Access Control ID
Cards. Failure to use your Access Control ID Card during a consecutive 10-day period during
the regular school calendar year (not including summer) will be construed as a lost, stolen, or
damaged badge.

Staff must use their district assigned identification cards to “badge-in” each time they enter a
campus. The building may be accessed after regular school hours and on weekends following the
Building Access Hours procedures below:

A. If you choose to be in the building by yourself, personal safety and building security need to
be taken into consideration.

B. Do not prop any doors or allow others to enter without using a badge at one of the entry
points.

C. After school hours and on weekends, all staff members are required to enter through the front
of the building and sign in/out – sheet located by alarm.

D. Please remember to take time for yourselves and your family!

Our custodians will be cleaning the building each night, but we need to do our part to help. Before
leaving for the day, your floors should be cleaned to the best of your ability and all desks and tables
cleared off. The custodians’ job is a big one! Compliments to them are greatly appreciated.

If any area of the building or your classroom is not being cleaned on a regular basis, please note the
concern in writing to an administrator. Please do not address your concerns directly to a custodian.

A. The highest standard of housekeeping should be maintained in order to have a clean,
wholesome, attractive place in which to learn and work.

B. Students should be encouraged to take pride in their school and to assume responsibility for
keeping it in the best condition possible.

C. Teachers are responsible for keeping the classroom free of clutter by maintaining a clean, well-
organized, and safe learning space.

D. Furniture should remain in the classrooms and cannot be removed or stored in a different
location without administrative approval, this includes science tables and classroom resources.

E. Store pest-friendly items in a plastic container with a lid. Spills and crumbs should be cleaned-
up immediately.

F. Food items may not be used in instructional displays as they attract pests. Send these work
products home to parents.

G. Soiled diapers should be properly disposed of in the classroom. Do not placed soiled diapers in
hallways or in trash cans outside of the classroom. Please call the front office to request custodial
assistance to remove tied trash bags, if needed.

H. Nails, Velcro, and other items that could damage walls should not be used unless administrative
approval is given.

I. Staff members should do their part to help keep the lounge area clean. Please check the
refrigerators for old/expired food items, clean tables, wash out your dishes, and keep the sink
free of food debris.

J. Bulletin boards should be seasonal, student-centered, and rotated on a regular basis. Student
created work should always be displayed and kept current.
a. Holiday decorations must be limited to seasonal decor or customary practices while
maintaining an appreciation for cultural differences. Holiday décor should remain neutral
in nature without direct evidence of religious preferences.
b. Lights or other decorations requiring electricity are not permissible as outlined in the
regulation for safety-fire/electrical.

Kid’s Way Café responds to the tastes, preferences and expectations of elementary school
student. The menu selections are designed to meet the USDA nutritional. The customized
nutrient-based menu development system ensures that meals contain wholesome content
and provides menu-planning flexibility for the on-site management team.

Breakfast:
Students may eat breakfast at school from 7:30 – 8:00 am daily. Families are encouraged to
join their students at one of the Visitor Tables.

*Note: A “Grab n’ Go” Breakfast is available for students arriving after 7:50 AM. Teachers
must allow students an opportunity to eat their breakfast in the classroom.

Lunch:
Students may eat lunch at school daily. Families are encouraged to join their students at
one of the Visitor Tables.

Staff members are allowed to set-up payment accounts and must keep a balance in their
account. Charging will be limited.

We employ a highly qualified and diverse staff with varied strengths, talents, and abilities. We believe
that each staff member contributes to the collaborative creation of an exceptional learning
community for our young students. There are many staff leadership opportunities available as we
work together towards continuous improvement in our instructional practices and campus processes
for the betterment of our students and families.

A. Action Team Captains: Will serve a 2 year term as the key person responsible for ensuring
Campus Improvement Plan goals and campus initiatives are implemented and achieved.
They will assign team member responsibilities and provide campus administration with periodic
updates on progress.
a. Events & PR – Facilitate & advertise events that promote our campus vision to students,
parents, and the community.
b. Family Involvement – Offer support, guidance, and ideas to encourage family
involvement.
c. Tech Team – Ensure technology is integrated into every aspect of our curriculum by
providing resources, training, and collaboration necessary for implementation in the
classroom.
d. Social/Teambuilding – Create a sense of community amongst all staff members by
providing activities, recognition, and support.

B. Action Team Members: Will serve on an Action Team of choice and work with team members
to ensure Campus Improvement Plan goals and campus initiatives are implemented and
achieved. They will provide grade level teams with updates and serve as the “expert” for their

C. CEIC Member: Will support campus administration in writing and implementing the Campus
Improvement Plan. Elected by peers, they will be charged with presenting staff with quarterly
updates and collecting and sharing data collected.

D. CIT Member: Campus Improvement Team – Will serve on the team that meets with campuses
across the district implementing continuous improvement opportunities in the classroom and
within the campus.

E. Code Red Team: Will serve as an emergency response team ready to administer CPR/AED
measures as needed. Annual certified training required.

F. Core Team (CPI): Will serve in a support capacity in the event a student’s behavior poses a
threat to himself or others. Core Team members are specially trained in non-violent crisis
prevention and intervention (CPI) techniques, including appropriate restraints (“safe-holds”)
following the Texas Behavior Support Imitative (TBSI) requirements. Annual certified training
required.

G. NEAC Representative: (NEAC). Will serve 1 year term. Elected by peers within each feeder
pattern. The purpose of the NEAC shall be to improve communication throughout the district
regarding district initiatives as well as a place for non-exempt employees to communicate
and help resolve work related issues.

H. SPED Campus Leads: Will serve a 2 year term as the key contact person responsible for
collaborating with district-level SPED coordinators and campus teachers.

I. TAC Representative: Teacher Advisory Council - Will serve a 1 year term. Elected by their
peers at each instructional level to foster district-wide communication, understanding and
problem-solving. Teachers are encouraged to submit questions, comments, or concerns to
your TAC representatives and administration.

J. Team Leads: Will serve a 2 year term as the liaison between campus administration and
horizontal team. Team Leads are expected to model effective instructional strategies,
collegiality and leadership qualities. They will be charged with ensuring team member
compliance with campus procedures and guidelines and meet regularly to share and discuss
team needs and concerns.

A. You are required by law to report the suspected abuse or neglect to the proper state
reporting agencies within 48 hours of the reported event that led to the suspicion.
a. Abuse: Abuse is mental, emotional, physical, or sexual injury to a child or failure to
prevent such injury to a child
b. Neglect: Neglect includes (1) failure to provide a child with food, clothing, shelter
and/or medical care; and/or (2) leaving a child in a situation where the child is at
risk of harm.
c. How do I make a report?
 Call the abuse and neglect hotline at 1-800-252-5400.

B. If you have reason to suspect child abuse, but are not positive, make the report. If you
have any doubts about whether or not it is abuse, call the hotline. They can advise you on
whether the signs you have observed are abuse.

C. Employees are not required to report their concern to the Principal before making the

Addresses current law that creates an offense if any person has cause to believe
a child is being abused or neglected and knowingly fails to make a report. This
bill clarifies that failure to make such a report is a Class A misdemeanor.
However, if the person failing to make a report is a “professional” (i.e. someone
licensed or certified by the state or working at a facility licensed by the state,
including teachers, day-care employees, attorneys, and clergy members), and
intends to conceal the abuse or neglect, the offense is a state jail felony.

A positive classroom climate supported by a caring and nurturing teacher is critical for every
child’s success. Effective classroom management and engaging assignments are the keys
to being proactive, rather than reactive. A teacher who is consistent, fair, and assigns work
that is constructive, meaningful and appropriately challenging is less likely to have discipline
problems.

A. All staff members are required to follow the “Discipline Management Techniques”
found in the KISD Student Code of Conduct.

B. Every child should be treated with respect and dignity. Remember, discipline issues
and concerns must remain confidential and may only be shared with those who have
an educational need to know. Refrain from discussing students in the lounge,
hallways, and other public areas.

C. We should always remember that students need to be taught how to behave in
certain situations. Every child comes to us with a broad range of experiences and
may not know what is and is not acceptable at school. Behavior management should
always be proactive and lead to a positive change and/or solution.

D. When issuing logical consequences to correct the behavior, follow the steps listed
below:
a. Warning – Recognition of what expectation is not being met.
b. Visual reminders of what the behavior should look or sound like.
c. Consequences that are logical and correlated to the expectation not being
met (Examples: time out, apology notes or verbal apologies, call home,
cleaning up mess, think sheets, etc.)

E. It is extremely important that you collect data regarding student behavior to identify
trends, triggers, what works and what doesn’t work. Collaborate with colleagues for
ideas on behavior interventions and data collection strategies.

F. Regular, timely, and positive communication with parents is a MUST with regards to
behavior. A daily behavior communication should tool will be used by all teachers.
Note: The only person that should communicate with parents about a behavior

concern is the classroom teacher. If another teacher has a concern about a student’s

G. Only members of the Core Team (CPI) may restrain a student in an emergency
situation.
H. A student should never:

a. Be sent to an unsupervised area to serve a time out.
b. Miss break/recess, assemblies, or special classes for disciplinary reasons.
c. Be held after school if parents have not been notified in advance, so that

transportation may be arranged for pick-up.
d. Be told that a confiscated item will not be returned. Teachers will contact the

parent for item retrieval. Illegal or dangerous items should not be returned to
the student or parent, but should be given to the Principal or Assistant Principal
immediately.
e. Be searched by a teacher. If a child refuses to voluntarily empty his/her pockets,
bring the student to the office. This does not apply to a desk or locker.
f. Have corporal punishment administered by a teacher – this is for your own
personal protection.
g. Be humiliated, roughly handled, or ignored by a staff member. Do not raise your
voice or lose your cool! If you do, they have found your “buttons” and will use
them all year!

Employees who choose to exercise their privilege of having their children in the building any time
before or after the regular school day must go over the following expectations with their children. For
the safety and security of the children and employees, children who continually violate the
expectations will not be allowed to stay before or after the regular school day.

A. Children are not allowed to enter ANY room(s) except the employee’s classroom, or the
classroom of another employee (with that employee’s consent and supervision).

B. Employee’s children are allowed in the staff lounge after school hours with an adult escort to
use the vending machines. Remember, this is a place for employees to relax, unwind, and talk
with their peers. It is best for children to stay out of “earshot” of these conversations.

C. Food and treats in the lounge are provided for the staff only unless otherwise specified by an
administrator.

D. Children are not allowed to “hang out” in the office area. It is very busy and the business
conducted in the office can be sensitive.

E. Children are not allowed in the workroom at any time and may not operate office equipment
(ex. copy machine, die-cut machine, etc.). Children may not print any materials they acquire
from the computer.

F. The outdoor playground equipment is available for any children who want to play outside with
adult supervision only.

G. Children cannot “play” with any classroom equipment for any reason. This includes: therapy
“toys” and student supplies/materials (unless supervised in the employee’s classroom or the
classroom of another employee who assumes responsibility).

H. The hallways are not a playground. It is expected that children walk quietly walk from one
room to another.

I. Children must follow the directive of ANY staff member who needs to correct behavior, relay a
message, or reminds students of safety and/or noise.

J. Finally, remember that this is place of business with conferences and meetings taking place
around the building. Having your children here is a privilege; therefore, please help us by
being preventative.

Please remember the following guidelines:

A. Remember “Last out, Lights out”. Turn off the lights when you leave your classroom (it
is also important to lock the door for safety reasons).

B. All outside doors should be kept closed and locked at all times.

C. All computers, monitors, printers, and other electronic devices should be turned off at
the end of the day. The network printers must stay on.

D. If you’re planning an event that requires air-conditioning after 3:30 p.m., you must
submit a request to at least 72 hours in advance.

E. No microwaves or refrigerators are allowed in classrooms. These appliances are only
permissible in the staff lounge.

F. Any appliances being requested in a classroom must be approved by the ARD
committee in extenuating circumstances and be specifically designated to meet a
student’s IEP.

G. Candle warmers, plug-ins, or any scented items/air fresheners are not allowed in any
classroom due to the negative impact upon overall air quality and potential fire
hazard. If there is an odor concern in the room, please notify office personnel.

H. Extension cords may only be used with a circuit breaker power strip plugged directly
into an outlet.

The Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a federal law that requires employers to
accurately pay non-exempt (hourly) employees for all hours worked.

A. KISD employs talented, hardworking, dedicated paraprofessionals and operational
support personnel who are committed to the district’s motto, mission, vision and
values.

B. KISD ensures its practices and policies are in compliance with law and policy.

C. If you perform work prior to the beginning of your shift or after your shift ends, you MUST
record the actual hours worked in the TimeClock Plus system so that the district has an
accurate record of your hours worked.

D. By policy, your supervisor must approve any overtime/comp time before you actually
work.

E. Your supervisor can not require you to work without compensation – you must record
your actual time worked in the TimeClock Plus system. Please notify Mark Youngs,

F. Your supervisor may require you take time off equal to the hours worked in excess of
your regular schedule within the same work week.

G. Compliance with the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act is a very serious matter. You

H. The district is required by the Department of Labor to maintain accurate payroll

A. Virtual field trips are permitted. However, occasionally there may be an
opportunity for an off-campus field trip. It is important to note that all campus
events must be aligned to the curriculum. A student should not be kept from
participating in this activity as a disciplinary consequence. Please see an
administrator if you have behavioral concerns.

B. All trips must be approved by the campus Principal and by central administration.
A request form must be completed BEFORE advertising the trip.

C. It is important to have all requests in as early in the year as possible.

D. The Team Lead will make arrangements and an agenda will be sent to the parents.

E. All permission slips must be returned and on file with the teachers before going on
the trip.

F. If a parent does not wish their child to participate, a phone/in-person conference
should take place and be documented on a Parent Conference form. Parents
need to be made aware that field trips are part of the curriculum.

G. Parent attendees should check in at the school at the designated time, if they wish
to participate.

H. Since Field trips are required as part of the basic educational program, students
may not be charged fees of any kind. The method of raising money for field trips
shall be limited to the following:
1. Voluntary contributions by parents.
2. Fund-raising projects.
3. Contributions by booster clubs or community groups.

A. An elementary school campus may not serve or provide access for students to FMNV at any
time anywhere on school premises during the school day.

B. Schools must prevent students from accessing FMNV’s on school premises.

C. Such food and beverages may not be sold or given away on school premises by the school,
school or non-school organizations, teachers, or any other person or group during the school
day.

D. This policy does NOT restrict what parents provide for their own child's lunch or snacks.

E. Parents may provide FMNV items for their own child's consumption, but may not provide
restricted items to other children at school.

Exemptions:

A. School Nurses: This policy does not apply to school nurses dispensing FMNVs to students on a
case-by-case basis for medical purposes.

B. Accommodating Students with Special Needs: Special Needs Students whose Individualized
Education Program (IEP) plan indicates the use of an FMNV for behavior modification or other
suitable need may be given FMNV items.

C. School Events: Students may be given FMNV items during the school day for up to three
different holiday celebrations each school year to be determined by campus administrators.
These items may not be given during meal times in the areas where school meals are being
served or consumed. Dates will be determined by campus administration at the beginning of
the school year. All classrooms must follow the predetermined schedule for exemption days.

D. Instructional Use of Food in Classroom: For instructional purposes teachers may use food as
long as the food items are not considered FMNV or candy. Students may consume food
prepared in the class for instructional purposes.

E. Field Trips: School-approved field trips are exempt from the nutrition policy.

learning environment for all of our students, teachers and assistants should strive to ensure
consistency in hallway procedures while modeling desired behaviors.

From time to time, a student may exhibit behaviors that could be considered disruptive and
may cause concern for other young children. It is critical that our staff work together in the
best interest of each child and defer to the teacher of record for the appropriate
reinforcement while promoting a learning environment that fosters respect, understanding,
and empathy.

Please keep these guidelines in mind when moving students throughout the building:

A. Hallways are considered a quiet zone. It is each staff member’s responsibility to move
students in an orderly fashion from location to location.

B. There should be no talking, running, or loitering in the hallways.

C. Students should be monitored in the hallways at all times. Students should never be
sent to other building areas without adult supervision.

D. Teachers and assistants should model positive talk and appropriate tone when
redirecting negative behaviors.

A. The school nurse is in our building each day of the week.

B. Students should be carefully screened before being escorted to the clinic. A "nurse’s
pass" is needed that specifically states his/her medical concern. The nurse will log their
visit on a computerized system.

C. Teachers should reserve the supplies in their First Aid Kit given to them at the beginning
of the year as part of the KISD Emergency Operations Plan – Campus Guide (Red
Binder). If the problem is one that can be cared for in the classroom, please do so. Use
your good judgment in evaluating the seriousness of the problem.

D. The nurse, or office personnel, must administer all student medications. NO
EXCEPTIONS! This is for your own protection. It will be charted at the time the
medication is given. If the children are on a field trip the teacher, or designee, is the
only person allowed dispensing medications unless the child's parent/guardian is in
attendance.

E. A student with asthma or anaphylaxis may possess and self-administer prescription
asthma or anaphylaxis medicine while on school property or at a school-related event
or activity. Students may not possess any other type of medication. See the nurse for
more information.

F. Students will be sent home when exhibiting the following symptoms:
a. Temperature of 100° or higher
b. Vomiting
c. Other medical conditions recommended by the nurse or listed in Policy FFAC
d. Students must be fever-free for 24 hours before allowed to return to school.

G. The nurse provides each teacher with a list of students who have unusual medical
conditions. It is important to note that these conditions are strictly confidential.

H. Be sure substitute teachers are made aware of any health concerns, by noting them in

KISD Grading Guidelines

Homework is a useful tool for learning when assigned properly and effectively. When given
without discretion, it can be detrimental to learning.

Please adhere to the following guidelines:

A. Reading a book will be a necessary portion of the daily homework assignments.

B. Consider the following criteria when making a homework assignment:

1. Will the student learn something beneficial from this homework assignment or
is it just busy work?

2. Does the student know how to do the assignment or will the parents have to
do it for him/her?

3. Does the student have access to the necessary resources and supplies
needed to complete the assignment?

4. Can the assignment be completed in a reasonable amount of time?

5. How will the homework assignment be evaluated? Remember, if homework
is given, it must be checked and immediate feedback given to the students.

6. A good rule of thumb is approximately 5 - 10 minutes of homework.

Balanced Literacy

Instructional time is to be utilized fully. Students and teachers should be actively involved in the
instructional process throughout the day. An effort should be made to utilize every moment of time in
the day to achieve academic success for all.

Teachers are required to follow the district curriculum when planning instruction and should utilize
powerful instructional strategies daily.

Learning Stations (aka “Centers”) should reinforce and extend learning from the current curriculum
unit and require intentional planning and preparation. Learning Stations should include opportunities
for working with the teacher. In addition, each student should receive direct feedback regarding
their progress.

In order to remain focused on instruction as our primary goal, please adhere to the following
expectations:

INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

A. Establish a routine by which students are engaged in meaningful instructional activities
from the time that they arrive, and at all times during the instructionally allocated times.

B. It is expected that teachers remain “actively involved” in teaching. This means that
teachers are moving about, working with individual or groups of students at least 80-90% of
the time.

C. All instructional activities should be developmentally appropriate, engaging, and relevant
for each and every student.

D. Do not use time allocated for instruction for lesson preparation or other administrative tasks,
such as e-mailing or making phone calls.

E. Do not allow parents to hold conferences with you during instructional time.

F. Students with social and/or behavioral problems usually experience low achievement. It is
extremely beneficial for these students to remain in the classroom as much as possible,
without compromising the achievement of other students in the classroom. Teachers should
work diligently to build relationships, model and teach appropriate behaviors, and
collaborate with others when needed to help a child with social/behavioral concerns.

The laminator machine is an expensive piece of equipment that needs to be handled with
care.

A. Staff members must be trained before utilizing the laminator for the first time.

B. The laminator key is required for use.

C. The laminator will be shut off at the end of each day.

D. If the roll is getting low, please notify the office secretary.

E. Due to the high cost of laminating and the time involved in laminating, please exercise
good judgment in choosing what and how many items you laminate.

Leaving the Classroom Board Policy FFF(LOCAL)

Student safety and security is our number one priority. Students may not be left unattended
at any time.

Teachers will need to have a plan in place to ensure adequate classroom supervision, in the
event an emergency arises and the teacher must leave the classroom. This plan is
extremely important, as you are liable for negligence in the event a child under your
supervision is injured while the teacher has left the classroom.

The most important part of the instructional process is planning. Teachers are responsible for
keeping lesson plans updated utilizing Forethought or google docs, as organizing and
planning are essential to effective teaching.

A. Horizontal (Grade Level) Teams are expected to collaboratively develop engaging,
challenging plans for their students as well as provide for consistency between classes.

B. All plans must be aligned to the Scope and Sequence (content/performance standards
and time frame) and include a plan for intervention if a student(s) fail to master the skill.

C. Each teacher is responsible for keeping plans up-to-date.

D. Administrators will regularly review lesson plans to look for student engagement, best
practice instruction, and plans for re-teaching.

Note: Teachers should be prepared with at least 3 days of emergency lesson plans and
materials that are easily accessible to administrators, team members, and substitute
teachers.

Erb’s EXPECTATIONS:

 Entered in Forethought, or Google Drive, by 7:00 AM each Monday
 Provide enough detail that someone can pick up the lesson and teach it as planned
 Indicate guided reading time and groups, (guided reading planning templates are

available in the Richardson book)

Library Board Policy

The library is an extension of the classroom. Teachers will remain with students during library
time to assist with learning and provide support for discipline. The librarian will outline specific
procedures and routines for library use. Your cooperation is expected.

A. Students are not allowed to check out books if they have not returned their books
from the previous week.

B. A fee may be assessed by the librarian for overdue, damaged, or lost books.

C. Teachers are welcome to check out items from the library. Please see the librarian
to obtain a list of items housed in the library, or to request new items.

D. All library books must be returned, or fees collected, prior to student’s withdrawal.

E. All library books must be returned at the end of the school year, unless special
arrangements have been made with the librarian for summer check-out (teachers
only).

Lounge Board Policy

Our school is a "home away from home" for each of us. It is the responsibility, therefore, of all
staff members to keep our lounge neat and clean. It should be a place for relaxing and
enjoying our co-workers.

*Note: Refrain from discussing student problems, negative behavior, families of students, etc.
in an open forum.

Please remember the following regarding the lounge:

A. Help keep the microwave and refrigerators clean.

B. Always clean-up after yourself (dishwashing is not a custodial duty.) It is all of our
responsibility to keep the lounge clean.

C. Employee’s children are allowed in the staff lounge after 4:00 pm with an adult
escort to use the vending machines. Remember, this is a place for employees to
relax, unwind, and talk with their peers. It is best for children to stay out of “earshot”
of these conversations.

D. Label items that are placed in the refrigerator and keep track of the items you
place in the refrigerator.

E. Open containers will be discarded every Friday.

F. Respect each other by not taking items that do not belong to you.

G. For health reasons and before any extended holiday break, the refrigerator will be
cleaned out. Notices will be posted and all items remaining after the deadline will
be thrown in the trash, regardless what condition it is in, or how expensive the dishes
may be.

A. Picture name badges are provided to all new staff members and are also the
building access cards.
a. Lost/damaged badges cost $25.00 to replace.
b. YOU MUST report a lost/damaged badge immediately to the campus
secretary.
c. You will have 48 hours to find your badge and then it will be turned off.
d. An administrative report regarding badges that are not used over a period of
time, and that are NOT reported as lost, will be given to the Principal for
follow-up. Therefore, it is important to use your badge daily.

B. Staff members are expected to wear their picture name badge at all times. Please
keep your badge in good condition in order to promote a professional image.

C. Staff will also receive a gold or silver name plate badge which must be worn in
addition to the picture name badge.
