describe competencies—knowledge and
skills—that most children can be expected to
exhibit in a high-quality program before entering
kindergarten. As companion volumes to the
foundations, the California Preschool Curriculum
Framework present strategies for early childhood
educators that enrich learning and development
opportunities for all children.
The foundations and framework are designed to
work together. While the foundations provide the
background information to understand children’s
developing knowledge and skills (the what), the
curriculum framework offers guidance on how
teachers and programs can support the learning
and development that are described in the
foundations (the how).
