2015-16

Dear Friends,

In June 2016, USC Hybrid High College Prep held its first graduation
ceremony for all 84 seniors, each of whom had earned at least one
acceptance to a selective four-year college or university.

Together, these students received a total of 437 college acceptances
and $4.8 million in scholarships and grants, a critical achievement
for students who are predominantly from low-income households
and are now the first in their families to attend college.

Just as 2015–16 was a milestone in the lives of these students, so
too was it a turning point in the brief history of Ednovate.

In addition to celebrating our first graduating class, we also opened
our second school, USC East College Prep, in Lincoln Heights, and
by spring 2016, we were making final plans to open a third school,
USC College Prep Santa Ana Campus, in the fall. We also received
charter approval from the Los Angeles Unified School District Board
of Education for two more Ednovate schools, now slated to open in
East Los Angeles and in the Pico-Union/Westlake area in 2017–18.

In this report, we share three components that we believe ensure
success for Ednovate students: a purpose born from a mission
that students will use their college degrees and careers to make
a Positive Multigenerational Change; personalization informed
by gifted teachers that use cutting-edge technology to meet the
individualized needs of their students; and a sense of community
and belonging instilled in students through an advisory program that
fosters deep and lasting relationships.

Our success as an organization depends on a fourth component—
the critical support we have received in these first four years
from partners like you. Together, we are helping to ensure that all
students, regardless of personal circumstance, are able to learn and
succeed.

With best regards,

Ednovate, Inc.

Ednovate, Inc. is a charter management organization (CMO) that was designed and developed by the USC Rossier
School of Education in 2012. By the end of the 2015–16 school year, we were serving more than 560 high school
students in two Los Angeles schools and were well on our way to fulfilling our promise to serve more than 2,300
students at five high schools by 2020.

We aim to close the college graduation gap for the primarily first-generation college-bound students that we serve
with a model that prepares them for success at a four-year university.

Our Challenge

Students from high-income families are eight times more likely to complete
college than their peers from low-income families.

Our Mission

Our students will use their college degrees and careers to make a Positive
Multigenerational Change.

Our Big Goal

100 percent of our students will be accepted into a selective four-year
university where they will thrive, with at least 90 percent persisting beyond
their freshman year.

Purpose

Ednovate’s mission is for its students to use their college degrees and careers to make a Positive Multigenerational
Change.
We believe that if students are driven by a deep sense of purpose, they will be more likely to persist through college
graduation and pursue meaningful careers. As part of the effort to create Positive Multigenerational Change, our
schools complete annual projects for each grade level with the themes of “know yourself,” “know your community,”
“know your nation” and “know your world.” By the time they graduate, students will view themselves as positive
change agents with a deeper purpose for college and career.
We strive to ensure that 100 percent of our students will be accepted into a selective four-year university, and this
commitment to students extends beyond graduation. Through a curriculum built to foster the qualities that students
will need to succeed in college—and with the additional support of an alumni coordinator—we also strive to ensure
that at least 90 percent of our graduates persist in college beyond their freshman year.

Personalization

Ednovate’s focus on personalized learning is informed by the belief that students can excel when they receive
one-on-one instruction. Ednovate schools strive to provide exactly what students need—how and when they need
it—through a combination of high-quality instruction and technology that prepares them to attend and succeed in
college.

“What I enjoy the most about the Ednovate

learning system is learning at your own pace.

Community

A hallmark of Ednovate schools is the importance of deep relationships and a community that fosters academic and
emotional support. The backbone of this community is the Advisory structure. From the first day of school, all
students are assigned to an advisor who remains with them all four years and meets with them twice a day. This
structure helps students develop a relationship with an adult mentor who knows their goals and dreams.

10 Ednovate, Inc.

“We try to help students learn to advocate for

themselves. It’s a skill set that not a lot of college
students have. We really try to set up our students
for success; to teach them to be self-aware and
recognize their strengths as well as their areas for
growth.”

—David Hernandez, teacher and advisor,
USC Hybrid High
