The Geoff Pickles Memorial Festival 1st, 2nd & 3rd July 2022

Welcome to our 33rd Festival ...

It’s now been three years since our last festival and what a time it has
been for us all, full of lockdowns, illnesses and losses to our folk
festival family. In 2019 we scheduled a festival in memory of
Jan Pickles, a stalwart of Cleckheaton Folk Festival and she was greatly
missed. It’s now devastating to have to let you all know that the
Festival this year will be dedicated to the memory of her husband,
Geoff, a founder member of the Festival, Director for its first 21 years,
committee member, Chairman of the Board and an icon of the folk
festival scene. Geoff passed away on 4th April 2022 after a period of
illness. His mark on the festival was made over a period of 35 years
and his presence will be felt for many years to come.

Although it’s been a while getting to this point our artists list was
secured at the end of 2019 in readiness for 2020 and, although the
Festival did not take place, we have been fortunate enough to
maintain the same artist list for 2022, so we are grateful to the artists
and agents for fulfilling the booking even though it has taken a while
to produce.

The plans for 2022 have been affected by the insecurity that
coronavirus created but we have tried to stay true to the traditions of
the Festival. We will, as usual, be holding our Saturday parade through
the town starting at 11am from the Fire Station. Street Entertainment
and Morris activity will again be on display with our usual Sunday
Family Fun Day for all. Due to circumstances beyond our control there
will not be a Street Market, however the Farmers’ Market will be held,
as always, on Saturday morning in Bradford Road Car Park. The
Community Ceilidh has made its way to the programme and if you
have not experienced this free, fun, family event then you are missing
out!

The Geoff Pickles Memorial Festival 1st, 2nd & 3rd July 2022

In order to increase the comfort and safety of our visitors we have
opted not to have artists in “Small Venues” this year. We considered
that the confined space combined with singing might not be for
everyone and, at the time of the decision, seemed like the best way to
make people feel safe.

We feel that our concerts throughout the weekend will be of the
highest standard and we are grateful for the support of Kirklees
Council, Arts Council England, Creative Scene and the many local
businesses without whom none of this would be possible.

As always there is a huge thank you to the organising committee and
for their efforts throughout the pandemic period and to the army of
Stewards that make the whole event possible

Finally to you, our audience, a huge thank you for carrying your ticket
bookings forward, coming back and making the event all worthwhile.
So we hope you enjoy your stay with us and look forward to doing it all
again next year on the 30th June, 1st & 2nd July 2023 as part of Kirklees
Year of Music. It will be a tremendous year.

If the event exceeded your expectations - tell the whole world. If it
didn’t - tell us ……

Dave Minich
Festival Director

ATTENTION PLEASE!
If you see anything over the weekend which you regard as a problem or a
potential hazard please do not hesitate to mention it to one of the
stewards or to the staff on the desk in the Town Hall at the earliest
opportunity. Your vigilance increases everybody’s safety and enjoyment.
A copy of our Grievance Procedure and all other policies will be available
on the Festival Desk.

CLECKHEATON FOLK FESTIVAL JULY 2022

The Folk Festival returns! After two endless years of Covid closures and
Festival plans on hold, it is wonderful to welcome you to Cleckheaton
again.

This is a bitter-sweet moment for the Festival. There is the unalloyed
happiness that the Cleckheaton celebration of folk music and culture is
back. Then there is the deep sadness that the founding member of the
Festival, Geoff Pickles, will not be with us as, sadly, Geoff passed away
in April. His vision for a vibrant Folk Festival in his local town lives on
and is a fitting tribute to his passion and commitment. Rest in peace
Geoff.
This is the 33rd Festival. If you have been to every one of those, then
please do let us know. If this is your first trip to Cleckheaton, then a
very big welcome from the town, its traders and its Councillors, all of
whom support the Festival financially or in kind. Whether you are new
to the Festival or a regular, I hope you will have a memorable
weekend.

The Festival is organised entirely by dedicated volunteers. They are
truly amazing. A very big THANK YOU from all the town to every single
one of those volunteers who ensure that we have a Festival to enjoy
and remember.

One more thing: when you get back home can you share your happy
experiences with friends, family, and folk lovers. Encourage them to
come for the 34th Festival. We like to share the love!

Have a fabulous Festival!

Kath Pinnock
Councillor and Baroness of Cleckheaton

OUR VENUES THIS YEAR

See the map on page 6

CLECKHEATON TOWN HALL (1)

The Town Hall will once again play host to our Festival Desk, the Festival
Tea Room and, of course, the bar. Being accessible to all users it is our
premier venue and access to the lift is from the door just to the left of the
main Town Hall steps. The office will be open during all the scheduled
events and also at the following times for all your information.

Festival Desk Festival Tea Room

Friday 12noon - 9.15pm 5pm - 9.15pm

Saturday 9am - 9.45pm 10am - 9.45pm

Sunday 10am - 3.15pm 10am - 4pm

Directions to all the other locations are given as viewed from the bottom
of the Town Hall steps and facing the main road.

MASONIC HALL – Temple and Dining Room (2)

Once again the Masonic Hall is hosting numerous events over the
weekend. It can be reached on foot (approx. ½ mile) by crossing at the
pelican crossing and walking in front of Savoy Square (7) before turning
left up Horncastle Street, past Home Bargains and across onto Serpentine
Road, turning left at the Junction. It is then 100yds up the road on the left.
There will be a mini bus service from the Town Hall to the Masonic Hall on
Saturday and Sunday. Light snacks will be available in the bar.

THE WICKHAM ARMS (3)

Supportive as ever, the Wickham will be hosting organised singarounds
(and spontaneous sessions too, no doubt) throughout the weekend.
Having a fine range of drinks, an internet and liquid café and a fine

restaurant, the Wickham is always a popular meeting place for our
visitors. It is also used as a dance venue and, as sponsors of the Wickham
Dance Competition for many years, the venue is also a must for Morris
enthusiasts. To get there turn left outside the Town Hall and left again just
before the traffic lights

THE COMMERCIAL (4)

Used throughout the weekend, the recently refurbished Commercial can
be found approximately 100yds to the right of the Town Hall on the
opposite side of the road going out of town. Disabled access is available
for the downstairs music sessions from the rear of the building which
houses a large beer garden and seating area.

THE METHODIST CHURCH AND HALL (5)

In addition to the Festival Church Service on Sunday morning, led by Geoff
and Mary Twentyman and a favourite amongst our visitors, the Methodist
Church will be hosting a couple of special features in the Hall. They will
also be serving hot and cold food on Saturday. To reach the Church cross
the road by the pelican crossing outside the Town Hall and turn left to
reach the traffic lights. Cross over and turn right up the side of the Park to
the Post Office, turn left and it is a few yards further down on the right.

ST PAUL’S CHURCH HALL (6)

St Paul’s will be hosting our workshops on Saturday. To get there turn left
outside the Town Hall and walk down through the traffic lights with the
Wickham on your left, pass the Wok Ever Restaurant and into St Paul’s Car
Park. The hall is on your left.

SAVOY SQUARE (7)

Our main outdoor venue, Savoy Square, is the grassy area on Bradford
Road almost opposite the Town Hall. This is the venue for much of the
Family Fun events over the weekend. To get there, cross the road at the
pelican and turn right. You can’t miss it.

Appearing this year …..

Bella Hardy

BBC Folk Singer of the Year, Bella Hardy has sung
unaccompanied ballads at a sold-out Royal Albert
Hall, learnt the songs of Chinese farmers during her
time as British Council Musician in Residence in
Yunnan Province and spent a year in Tennessee as a
ranch hand, looking after horses, fiddle-singing in
the diners, and immersing herself in the music
culture of Nashville. With unflinching courage, Bella
has explored and blurred musical boundaries from a
mastery of traditional music to pop production and
electronics, releasing ten solo records including her
'Best Of' in 2019. With her acclaimed, mesmerising
voice and earthy fiddle accompaniments, Bella now
writes and composes in her beloved Peak District,
conjuring and twisting stories that call straight to
the heart.

Bob & Gill Berry

Bob and Gill first met in 1983 at the
Lamb Ale Festival in Bob's home village
of Kirtlington, Oxfordshire, which
heralded the start of a partnership that
has gone from strength to strength
both musically and as folk organisers.
Right from the start there was a musical
bond that ties together two main
qualities, namely Gill’s truly stunning
voice, and Bob’s harmonies and
sensitive accompaniments. Drawing
influences from traditional singers and
some contemporary writers they are
happiest singing unaccompanied pieces
in close harmony.

Bob Fox

For more than 40 years Bob Fox has been regarded as one of “the iconic voices”
of British folk song. Deeply influenced by the working class culture and
industrial folk song prevalent in his native County Durham he has become a first
rate exponent of storytelling through song. A career that began during the

vibrant “folk revival” of the 60s and
70s in England led Bob into regular
and extensive touring throughout the
UK, Europe, USA, Australia and New
Zealand, firstly with fellow North
Easterner Stu Luckley in their ground-
breaking acoustic duo and, later,
alongside such musical heavyweights
as Ralph McTell, Richard Thompson,
Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention.

Bob’s masterful interpretation of traditional and contemporary song combined
with an outstanding guitar technique has also earned him countless
nominations in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards over the years.

Don’t miss a chance to experience his warm, rich voice, accompanied by a
wonderful guitar style that can both drive or embellish his supreme singing.
Expect to hear songs of love, joy, work and humour as he performs material
from War Horse, newly written songs from the New Radio Ballad series and old
favourites from his many recordings.

Sunday: Town Hall 2.40pm

Copper Kettle

Michael Forsyth is a singer/guitarist and songwriter
from Mirfield, West Yorkshire. Although he is more
generally known as a founder member of the well-
known duo Copper Kettle, this year he will be
performing solo. It has been said that his songs
appeal to audiences of all generations. A gentle
ballad about an Irish castle might be followed by a
raucous sea song, or a song about war evacuation.
A prolific songwriter, his sets will consist mainly of
songs taken from his songbook “Along Life’s Road”.

Den Miller

Den Miller is a Keighley-based singer-
songwriter, multi-instrumental musician and
entertaining solo performer whose sixth studio
album was released in June 2020. Den's songs
mix the silly and the serious, often in the same
song, but always with his trademark mission
statement of a strong melody plus intelligent
lyrics, delivered with energy, honesty and
emotion.

Den is both an accomplished guitarist and
pianist, often using a loop pedal to play both at
once, and also plays harmonica and drums. He
has an impressive vocal range and a love of
singing harmony, something which the loop pedal also allows a soloist to do
live. Den is currently one quarter of The Lost Larks and one third of the Strid
and Den Miller Trio.

Gigspanner Big Band

The Gigspanner Big Band are a unique force
in British folk music. Their high-energy,
virtuosic performances appeal equally to
traditionalists and to those looking for
something more experimental, and they
have garnered praise from publications as
varied as fRoots, The Telegraph and The
Wire, where they were described as
‘melodically folk-rooted yet open and
innovative beyond the constraints of genre’

Beginning life as a trio - with fiddle player
Peter Knight being joined by percussionist
Sacha Trochet and guitarist Roger Flack - the
line-up has been expanded to form the Gigspanner Big Band, with acclaimed

multi-instrumental duo Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin - BBC Folk
Awards 'Best Duo') and Bellowhead co-founder and melodeon player
extraordinaire, John Spiers, joining the fray. As collaborations go, it doesn't get
much more mouth-watering than this.

Sunday: Town Hall 4pm

Hissyfit

Linda Kelly and Hazel Richings formed Hissyfit in
Beverley, East Yorkshire many, many years ago. A
love of traditional music and the inspiration of the
fishing community in nearby Hull drew Linda into
writing songs and the natural harmonies provided by
Hazel meant that it was not long before they were
encouraged to hit the road, singing at clubs and
festivals throughout the U.K. and The Netherlands.
They are delighted to return to Cleckheaton Folk
Festival bringing with them their own style of
traditional folk, wrapped up in their unique brand of harmonies.

Idiot & Friend

Keith Donnelly and Les Barker...
or should that be Les Barker
and Keith Donnelly? Which one
is the idiot, and which one is
the friend? You decide!
Between them they've had
audiences rolling in the aisles,
in stitches, at virtually every
folk festival there is. But if
you've never seen them on
stage together then, you've
never... seen them on stage together! (And if you have – give them another

chance, they might get better!)

The idea for 'Idiot and Friend' came about when they decided to share the
stage rather than do their normal individual sets. The audience was treated to a
very special fusion of two very (very!) great comedy talents, and simply refused
to let the dynamic duo get off the stage! They both decided that the hilarity and
mayhem down under was too good to be a one-off, and so agreed to repeat the
experience.

Jess and Richard Arrowsmith

Jess and Richard are singers and

musicians (fiddle & melodeon) and

well established in the traditional

English music scene. They bring you

powerful vocals, subtle

accompaniments, lively tunes and a

broad range of material that will

have you laughing, weeping, tapping

your feet and joining in the choruses.

Jess’s self-penned songs have been

performed and recorded by a range

of other artists and are entering the

tradition in their own right. Jess & Richard’s latest project in conjunction with

James Fagan & Nancy Kerr as the Melrose Quartet earned them a nomination

for “Best Group” at the 2014 BBC Folk Awards. Other projects past & present

include Hekety, Glorystrokes, Crucible and Pecsaetan.

Kimber’s Men

Audiences everywhere rave over the harmonies of Kimber’s Men. They have
appeared at Festivals in Europe, Australia and all over the UK. Featured twice
on Sunday Brunch for Channel 4, they also starred in the BBC2 and BBC4
production of Sea Songs, with Gareth Malone.

John Bromley has been singing folk songs since he was sixteen and sings in his
family band The Bromleys and Hebric. John plays guitar, whistle and bodhran.
Neil Kimber has been performing and singing since the late sixties, he plays

guitar. Neil and Ros Kimber
composed the wonderful song
‘Don’t Take The Heroes’, which is
now being sung by many shanty
bands all over the world, and
describes the aftermath of the
Penlee lifeboat disaster.

Kimber’s Men are lucky to have
long standing member Gareth
Scott. He has a powerful and
bluesy voice and is an
accomplished guitarist, bringing another dimension to the sound they produce.
Steve Smith who, as sound engineer, recorded and produced their latest album
and as multi-instrumentalist, completes the group with his high harmonies.
Expect to laugh, sing and be generally entertained.

Monkey’s Fist

Monkey’s Fist comprises: Colin Devey, a
Yorkshireman living in Normanton; Steve Flude,
another Yorkshireman, from Sheffield, and John
Horsey, also based in Sheffield (although
originally from London).

Colin is one of the founder members of the
group, being there at its beginning in 2000. His
rich and powerful voice is the foundation of
Monkey’s Fists’ unique sound. As the only
member of the group who has actually worked at
sea, as a navigating officer, Colin also brings a wealth of knowledge and
experience which comes through in his interpretation of maritime songs from
an extensive repertoire.

Steve’s strong and distinctive vocals also provide the power which means the
group can be heard in a wide range of settings without PA. Steve is also the
group’s main ‘front man’ and his knowledgeable and humorous introductions
help to provide the band’s legendary performance atmosphere.

John, along with Steve, was a member of the Sheffield-based shanty group
‘Sheafknot’ and both joined Monkey’s Fist after Sheafknot’s demise. John
provides the group’s musical accompaniment on guitar, concertina (baritone
McCann duet), occasional harmonica and bodhran, together with both bass
and high vocal harmonies.

lived and worked.

Nick Dow is trained in the dying art of Gypsy Wagon Painting and has worked as

humour, and nobody goes home disappointed.

Si Barron

Si has been singing and playing English Traditional
Song nationally for 15 years, first with the duo Barron
Brady and now as a solo performer. A self-taught
guitarist, he tries to keep the accompaniment out of
the way of the words and melody, believing it’s the
songs that matter. With his relaxed and humorous
stage manner and strong singing voice, Si is a folk
fanatic who celebrates this powerful music every time
he sings. ‘I think he’s a really, really fine guitarist and
an even finer interpreter of traditional and
contemporary folk songs.’ Mike Harding

sorts - during lockdown when he penned a song a
day for 100 days and went viral with topical ditties
about Dominic Cummings and Matt Hancock. He
plays a mixture of his own material and his dad’s -
Mike Canavan - who was a popular figure around
the Manchester folk scene in the 60s and 70s and
wrote Knocker Upper Man, a song still performed
at clubs throughout the country.

The Bromleys

The Bromleys are John,
Jenny & James (father,
daughter & son). Each gifted
with a powerful voice, they
sing a mixture of traditional
and contemporary folk
songs in three part
harmony, both acapella and
with instrumental
accompaniment. Together,
The Bromleys create a rich blend of voices that is unique to their kin. They
have each performed solo and as part of a variety of bands, including
Kimber's Men, Hebric and A Rookery and it was only ever a matter of time
until they began singing together. It runs through their blood. They have
been well received at a number of folk festivals and folk clubs and have
recently released their debut EP “Oak and Ash and Thorn”.

Sunday: Town Hall 1.50pm

The Wilson Family

The formidable five Wilson
Brothers, Tom, Chris, Steve, Ken
and Mike are the accepted
benchmark for powerhouse
unaccompanied singing. Tom,
Chris and Steve celebrated 40
continuous years of singing
together during 2015, Ken and
Mike joining them in the late
1970s. From performing at Folk
Clubs and Festivals, to running
their legendary weekly folk club,
to appearances at The Royal Albert Hall’s BBC Proms or recording and
performing with world renowned musician Sting, they have championed our
music continuously for approaching five decades. In October 2017 The Wilson
Family were recipients of The Gold Badge Award of the English Folk Dance and

songs and contemporary pieces
written in the traditional vein.
Most of their songs have choruses

join in.

Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer

Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer effortlessly blend
traditional material with contemporary sounds.
Their performances showcase new
interpretations of old songs alongside original self
-penned tunes and new contemporary songs that
are entirely at home in the tradition. They have
developed a sound that is both familiar and fresh.
Strong believers in letting the music tradition live
and breathe through sensitive interpretation,
Vicki and Jonny allow the melody to sing without
any constraints. Winter 2016 saw Vicki & Jonny as
the front cover of the Living Tradition Magazine
with a centre spread interview.

Be entranced by the haunting nyckelharpa, amazed at the cow horn (one of the
world's earliest communication devices) and meet some of the bagpipes that
didn't come from Scotland. Suitable for all ages, their performances are packed
with toe tapping tunes and songs of love, death, trains and dressing up (not
always at the same time) all presented with sparkling gentle humour, lots of
smiles and skilful musicianship.

Saturday: Town Hall 1.30pm.

Masonic Dining Room 8.45pm.

Venue Entrance Policy

Priority to paid events will always be given to purchasers of day/weekend/
rover tickets. Town Hall concert tickets are available throughout the
weekend. For other venues, individual entrance tickets will be available on
the door, subject to capacity, but space in any particular venue cannot be
guaranteed. Normally doors will open 30 minutes before the start time for
pre-paid ticket holders; tickets will be on sale on the door from 20 minutes
before and Complimentary/Artist/Volunteer passes will be allowed in no
sooner than 10 minutes before the published start time, providing there is
sufficient capacity.

All free events will be on a “first come, first served” basis (with the
exception of the Sunday Night concerts which will be covered by a separate
ticket available from the Town Hall desk) When events follow on from each
other in the same venue, the venue must be vacated between events and,
for paid events, re-entry will follow the entrance policy.

All venues have a maximum number of people allowed in. Please do not
remonstrate with the Stewards if they will not let you in - they are only
following their instructions.

‘ A Secret Stream’ with Nick & Mally Dow

Songs collected from English Gypsies.

Saturday 1pm – 3pm in the Methodist Church Hall

Nick and Mally Dow introduce the latest book of traditional songs. Find out how
Cecil Sharp nearly lost his life in a Gypsy camp, and how Ella Leather was put
under a Gypsy curse. Hear how the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams collected
some of his most famous songs while sat round a fire upon an upturned bucket,
and how Edwardian collector Alice Gillington nearly froze to death in a Gypsy
wagon. A surprising and entertaining presentation.

Introduction to DADGAG Tunings with Si Barron

Saturday: 12.00noon - 1.00pm

Everything you wanted to know about DADGAD tuning but haven’t asked
(for one reason or another…)

I look to inspire those who have not tried it before
- Why I use DADGAD for much of my repertoire - it’s versatility

- Chords and Keys - getting to know what you can play
- Understanding its limitations (why you may need two guitars!)
- Why people don’t use DADGAD (even though it’s easier than standard)

- Strumming and picking in DADGAD
- We’ll look at playing and singing a fairly easy song in DADGAD

================================

“Sing Me A Shanty” with Monkey’s Fist

Saturday: 1.30pm - 2.30pm

The first half of the session will involve a discussion about the
origins, history and purpose of sea shanties. During the second half we
will be singing examples of the different types of shanty i.e. hauling/
capstan etc with as much audience participation as possible. So come
along and join in!!

FESTIVAL WALK with NIGEL BURTON

Sunday 3rd July — Town Hall Steps 10.00am
A walk to remind the 'Folkies' what Cleckheaton has to offer after two
years of lockdown/restrictions. Old festival goers will remember the
places they used to go see their favourites but new festival folkies might
not know just where to go to see their bands.
This walk will give the walkers a chance to see where they need to visit
during the festival to see the acts and see some places they may not have
seen before.
Starting at 10.00 at the Town Hall steps we will stroll along towards the
Post Office and under the Greenway to see where the old baths used to
be. A big contrast to the brand-new baths near the camping grounds. See
the Free Masons Hall and down to the Bradford Road passing the
Commercial pub and further on the largest Asian restaurant. Then past
the old carpet works, now a furniture factory, and on down to the Spen
River for a walk to 'Bottoms' the first camping site 20 odd years ago. If
the weather is wet, then a walk along the un-muddy greenway back to
town.
A quick look at the million pound church and along to St Peg Lane to see
a foundry that has moved from one side of town to the other. Past the
Wickham Arms and a glimpse of the Catholic Church Hall before crossing
the road to see the Victoria Quarter, which used to be the “rubber
tunnel” and, passing The Obediah Brooke, back to the Town Hall.
Finally, a reminder to the Folkies that the Town Hall will be open for cups
of tea etc. and has a desk to find out which groups are where on Sunday
afternoon/evening.

FESTIVAL CHURCH SERVICE

Sunday 3rd July in the Methodist Church 10.30am

After a break of three years, 2022's Folk Festival Service is a little
different. The overall theme is "Moody and Sankey Hymns" so, if you
enjoy a good sing of classic Victorian evangelical hymns, come along and
join us to raise the roof. The service will be interspersed with individual
and joint Moody and Sankey items from guests and regulars.

Geoff and Mary Twentyman will lead the service with guests Kath
Charnock, Ken & Sandie Hudson and Pete & Deanna Norman.

SMALL VENUES INITIATIVE

When the planning for the festival began in earnest back in January it
was decided by the festival committee that the possibility of social
distancing in the small venues, where an artist might be performing, was
restricted to say the least. Considering the uncertainty revolving around
the Covid19 issue at the time we opted to put the Small Venues on hold
for 2022. We would like to think that we will be able to resume this
initiative in 2023. Thank you for your understanding.

FRINGE ACTIVITIES

The sessions and singarounds are the heart of a good festival. Once
again Cleckheaton Folk Festival is providing the platform and we hope
that you, our visitors, will do the rest. There’s lots of opportunity to sing
your favourite song or play your favourite tune and perhaps hear the
occasional festival performer. Enjoy a pleasant drink in convivial
surroundings whilst listening to the best Cleckheaton has to offer. Here
are the ones we have arranged but as always others may spring up
spontaneously.

40

The Geoff Pickles Memorial Festival 1st, 2nd & 3rd July 2022

We would ask that participants be considerate of the needs of others and allow
people to perform their version of songs and tunes which you may sing or play
differently. By all means join in but allow the leader to lead in his or her own
fashion.
Fringe events such as these are a free activity organised by the Festival
Committee for the enjoyment of local residents and festival goers alike.
However, if you enjoy the experience, festival donation boxes will be available
and any contributions you care to make will be put towards the costs of next
year’s festival.

THE WICKHAM DANCE TROPHY

Well it’s good to be back and morrising again!! It has been 3 years since the
wonderful Wickham Trophy was presented to Thieving Magpies (for the fifth
time!). We hope there is a side out there that can stop their domination in this
light hearted competition. The event is judged by the opinion of the audience
present and, hopefully, sober enough to choose based on presentation and
entertainment value.

The “competition” provides a light hearted opportunity for all the sides to get
together in one location to cheer each other and enjoy each others
performances.

As ever we are grateful to the landlord and staff of the Wickham Arms Hotel for
hosting this little debacle and for providing the much-coveted Wickham Trophy.
The winners keep this trophy for the year (or 3) and return it with their name
engraved alongside the other winners, but they do get to keep a memento for
themselves and, time allowing, have a dance at the Festival Ceilidh.

Today’s sides keep alive the tradition of various styles of dance, with multi-
coloured costumes and with the jingling of bells, swishing of swords, and the
odd dancer leaping about in and out of the audience. They will be providing
entertainment throughout the town over the weekend.

Dance Sides Appearing this year …….

Persephone

Persephone Women’s Morris was
formed in 1978 and practices in the
village of Hunsworth near Cleckheaton.
They dance in the Northwest tradition
in a lively style using sticks, garlands,
slings and bobbins and have a varied
repertoire including a mixture of
traditional dances from the northwest
of England and their own self-composed
dances.

Kit is a black top with a striking green and yellow diagonal sash and a flared
black skirt trimmed with green and yellow, together with black tights and black
clogs with bells. Their band also wears black.

During their over forty year history they have danced at weekends and festivals
in many parts of the country and abroad and are delighted to be dancing again
on homeground in Cleckheaton

Red Cuthbert Morris

Red Cuthbert Morris, based in
Bedford, was founded in 2012 by
a group of friends who love
Morris dancing. They perform a
mixture of traditional Border and
Cotswold dances as well as some
dances of thier own and other
modern compositions and are
keen to keep traditions alive
while adding something new.
Affiliated to the Morris
Federation, they are open to
people of all genders.
