FIGHTING SHADOWS
WORD...

That has always been my greatest
weapon,

One I could use to get out of any situation
No matter how physical or emotional any

fight could be,
I had WORD.

So now comes that battle,
Fighting shadows.

They can’t hear WORD,
They don’t use WORD,
They just hit my core.

It’s like I’m tied up in a web
Like...like I’m lost in some maze,

I’m alone, but not alone,
Because I’m with the shadows,

Shadows I can’t feel,
Shadows that are beyond reach

But I’m fighting shadows.

The question is,
ARE THEY MY OWN?
I feel them attacking from all angles,
But I am singlehandedly capable of
creating a world, in which I’m all alone,
A world of just me.
With just the sounds of my frustrated

sighs
And the loud silent screams of shadows,

The shadows I’m fighting.

I’m caught up in their midst,
When it will end, I don’t know.
But all my scars are proof that...

...I’m FIGHTING SHADOWS

Each one of us has something to give. Only Zimbabweans will build Zimbabwe. If this is true for
nations it's true for individuals 'Only YOU will help build YOU' not the government, not your daddy or
your friend but YOU. You're your best hope. Let's stop the blaming game and take ownership of our
lives, cities and nation. Own your life. Education is key to development and it is a personal responsibility.
It does not end the day you graduate rather it is a continuous process. Let’s educate ourselves. "Education
is broadening one’s mind to see beyond the horizon. It is to draw out the potentialities within an individual and further
develop the potential till the potentials are serving humanity and earns you commercial value."

Find out what you can do and be glad to do it. Zimbabwe produces so
many graduates every year and it has the most valuable resources in the
world but shockingly it has the highest rate of unemployment. This is
sad. It's because of the wrong mental attitude, which translate to low
mental output. That's why most lucky graduates are vendors today,
the rest spend the day glued to the television set or on social media,
wasting the greatest resource; time. Some spend their time moving
from one church to the other hoping to receive a miracle job or
money, not realizing that money is not found but it's created;
hoping to get a job not releasing that somebody created that job.
Why not create your own job? God never created money but He
created a tree and men through the deployment of his mind
created his own job and created the chair which earned him
commercial value(money). Create your own money. Put your mind
to work, create things and let them earn you commercial value. Your
mind is a tool therefore use it. Let your education show in the things
you create not only in a certificate. Use your time to develop yourself.

The government is not there to give you a job but to create an environment for anyone and everyone to
do something as long it is good for God and good for people. We have to be grateful for our
opportunities so far as a nation; the freedom we have, the peace we have because of the wonderful
peace loving people of Zimbabwe and the opportunity to go to school and access to knowledge. Let's
all explore the economic policies in place and see how best we can benefit from them. We can build a
thriving economy; we have the resources and the minds. Let’s educate our minds and put them to work
and build ourselves and our nation. Our peace, prosperity and success will come from within us
therefore it's important that each one of us perform his role and let us be ready and willing to be a vital
part of it. Success is in the decision equation, make a decision and act on your decision. Choose to be a
success.

Can you believe this was us? Well done Rhodesia (Zimbabwe)

The United Nations Food Agriculture Year Book of 1975 ranked the then Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) second in the world in
terms of yields of maize, wheat, soya beans and groundnuts and third for cotton. In the combined ranking for all these
crops, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) was ranked first in the world. 'Rhodesia's Virginia tobacco was rated the best in yield and
quality, while maize entries in world championships were consistently placed in the three slots. The world's largest single
citrus producer was developed early in the country's history. 'Rhodesia was the second world's largest exporter of flue-cured
tobacco. This together with exports of maize, soya beans, cotton, sugar, coffee, tea, fruit, vegetables, flowers and beef made
agriculture the major source of foreign currency. Agriculture contributed more to the GDP than any other industry. It was
the largest employer of labor, providing employment for about a third of the total labor force.

We did it back then (we were the laborers), we can do it again or even better. We'll now be the minds
and laborers behind the success of Zimbabwe. To achieve this, we need education, lets educate(train)
ourselves for the opportunity. Invest in your mind, it's a more guaranteed investment. Make a decision
and act on it. Success is in doing, let us be involved; be initiative. Don't wait for the government to give
you the seed, fertilizer or the tractor, rather think (put your mind to work) how you can get these and
produce. We have a world to take. Let’s do this thing. Yes! We can.

Instinct Africa

is a nature conservation oriented club whose main aim is to expose students to the practical
operations of conservation - bridging the gap between academic learning and field practice under
the motto “Learn, Educate, and Conserve”. As much as the club seeks to learn from conservation
industry players by participating in their activities, gaining practical exposure, it also engages in
outreach programmes, reaching out to mainstream schools to harness tomorrow’s conservationists at
a tender age. The club is currently negotiating partnerships with major players in the conservation
industry and to date they have the support of Birdlife Zimbabwe on board and their activities are

also in cooperation with Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimbabwe’s mother
conservation body). The Patrons of the club are Professor N. Muboko (Chairperson), Professor

Gandiwa (Dean of School) and Mr T. Tarakini. Membership is open to all CUT community
members with a passion for nature.

Instinct Africa and Birdlife BUSE club members going through the bird counting exercise.
On the 22nd of April 2017, Instinct Africa met Birdlife club members from Bindura University
(BUSE) under the leadership of Julia Dupree of Birdlife Zimbabwe to celebrate Earth Day at
Biri dam through a water bird counting event. 11 bird species were sighted with the Western
Cattle Egret being the dominant species with a total of 85 individuals. These were found in
large numbers since they feed on the ticks found on cattle grazing around the dam. Other
species included little egret, Breeding whiskered tern, Dabbling duck (Little Greebe), Pied web
tail, Woodsand Piper, Wattled Lapwing, Greenbacked Heron, Reed Cormorant and Malachite
Kingfisher. Of interest was the endangered African fish eagle which recorded a count of 2
birds. Apart from the core event of bird counting, club members also got an appreciation of
the sustainable fishing practices being exercised by the community through the use of the rod-
and-bait method. Nets are prohibited as they tend to induce overharvesting.
To round off the day, all club members left Biri dam for Chinhoyi caves, a popular tourist
attraction which is listed among Zimbabwe’s seven Ramras sites (Protected wetlands). It was
an opportunity to interact, with the Instinct Africa members (CUT students) showing their
Birdlife Bindura counterparts around. The day was sealed off at sunset

ENTREPRENUERSHIP WITH
PATSON

ENTREPRENURIALJOURNEYBEGINSWITHIDEAGENERATION

“Launching your own business is one of the fulfilling things that one can do”, contemporary Entrepreneur, Sir
Richard Branson, Virgin Airways Boss once remarked. The starting point of creating a successful business is the
idea generation stage. Maybe before I expound more about the topic let me remind you that, in the following
issues, if given space I will be unearthing topical aspects about the subject of entrepreneurship. Most successful
entrepreneurs follow comparable patterns and share basic characteristics. One of them being able to generate a
good idea and translate it into commercial value. The secret behind every successful business all boils down to
idea conception stage. Anyone who is about to lunch a business must consider this stage critical, as this is the
foundation of the business success.
To begin with, let us look at my own definition of “Entrepreneurship”. My definition of entrepreneurship is a mind-
set that seeks out for opportunities through a business idea or expanding an existing one and managing the risk
associated with it to gain a commercial value. Let us consider what other successful Entrepreneurs look at the
subject matter. I once asked, Samuelle Dimairho, Zimbabwe Young Award Winning Entrepreneur, Chengetedzai
Depository Company Co-Founder what he understands about entrepreneurship and he said, “My definition of
entrepreneurship is being able to innovate and breaking new grounds”. Strive Masiyiwa, Econet Holdings Founder
once remarked that, “There is another path of entrepreneurship that is “Fast follower”. There are many companies
who are successful through the ability to see what others have done and then moving quickly to do the same
thing”. Another philosopher once defined entrepreneurship as taking advantage of other people’s ignorance. A
closer look at the above definitions, these all points to idea generation process. In the following paragraphs, I
would like to explain various ways of generating a business ideas taking a closer look at the above definitions.
Identifying a need or solving a problem
This is one of the best way of generating an idea, by
identifying a need in your environment, your community, your
country, your continent or around the word. Most celebrated
prominent entrepreneurs reached their entrepreneurial
puzzle by their ability to identify a problem in their
environment and render solutions. In this world, which is
facing complex needs of various goods and services, it is
calling out for problem solvers. Problem solvers are in short
supply. In my previous article, I pointed out that Zimbabwe
electricity energy demand was at 2200 megawatt against total
current grid of 1100 megawatt. This will give us a deference of 1100
megawatt. This discrepancy is a need that is crying out for entrepreneurs to solve.

Fast follower
Let me borrow this way from, renowned,
Businessman Strive Masiyiwa from his Facebook
Posts. There are actually many businesses that
are doing very well by this method. It is possible
to borrow a business idea from somewhere and
launch is in another place. Great businesses we
see every day, some are just borrowed ideas. He
gave examples of his business initiative Ecocash,
Zimbabwe mobile money transfer as a borrowed
idea. He also gave examples of Microsoft, Apple
and others that they could have followed this
path.

Ability to innovate or breaking
new grounds
Innovation implies being able to
introduce a non-existing product,
service, idea or a method of doing
something. This another great way
of generating a business Idea, that
is to generate concepts, products
or services that were non-
existence. In this ever-changing
world, it requires people who are
able to innovate. There are also
great organisations that have
succeeded by bringing innovative
services and products to the
market. The prominent Wright
Brothers, who generated an idea
of creating an Aeroplane are some
of great examples of innovators. If
we haven’t had people with that
level of thinking, we wouldn’t have
airlines today. The world today
requires innovators. Innovation is
the ability to do things differently,
being able to break new grounds
and chatting new paths.

Expanding an existing one
This is another best way to generate a business idea. This way you look at an existing product or service then
think of new ways of improving it. Virgin Airways was founded when Sir Richard Branson received bad service in
a certain Airline. There are many businesses that are doing very well by expanding existing ideas. Expanding an

existing idea might imply buying an existing business and increase the market, finances, workforce or
operations. There are various ways of doing it such as Merging, Acquisition, Takeovers or buying shares of any

already operating business.

BEAUTY

PAGEANTS

After the much-hyped Miss CUT 2017 I couldn’t turn a blind eye to something that has
always bothered me. Are beauty pageants overrated? Every time we think of a beauty

pageant the first thing that comes to mind is red carpet, glitz
and glamour, but do we ever step back and think about all the

work that goes into it. All the rehearsals, photo shoots, dress
fittings, diets, anxiety and emotional preparation are
done to prepare for just one special day. Models go
through countless sleepless nights wondering about the
outcome and if all this is worth it. I just got a chance to
break down some of the effects these
pageants have on models whether
before, during or after the event.

THE GOOD ‘Never lose an
opportunity
1. Without any doubt, beauty pageants help boost one’s of seeing
confidence off and on stage. anything
beautiful, for
2. It also offers a platform for meeting new people and getting to beauty is
know them. God’s
handwriting.’
3. Models become able to present themselves in front of a large
audience. ~RALPH WALDO EMERSON~

4. Interview skills also become more refined after this #claimyourplace
experience. #beboldforchange
By Chitingwiza delight
5. Modelling is not only about winning the title but it also opens
many doors for greater things and opportunities. Word of
advice though: don’t be too thirsty for opportunity to drink
from every cup for that’s how you get poisoned.

6. The winning models or reigning Queen can also engage in
female empowerment programs, peer to peer counselling and
public speaking. The duty of the reigning queen should not
end on that stage but should extend as far as helping other
girls and establishing yourself.

THE UGLY

1. Truth be told, these pageants focus more on appearance
rather than inner beauty. Though in some instances they can
include speeches and talent reviews at the end of the day ‘the
most beautiful girl’ wins.

2. Some models may find it difficult to decipher the stage from
the real world and that dear reader is a catastrophe.

3. The models who don’t make it can also suffer from post-
pageant depression. Questions like, am l a loser, am i not
beautiful enough or am i too fat become to dominate the mind.
It’s not easy losing a battle you gave your all and had picked
out your best weapon for.

4. After losing one can also suffer from low self-esteem. It can
also stem from thinking that you only look good with make up
on and you stop admiring your natural beauty.

5. Since nearly all beauty pageants focus on tall and slender
girls, models might end up taking up risky diets just to keep
the weight off. Some end up suffering from eating disorders
such as anorexia nervosa.

Be the change you want to see and enter beauty pageants to gain
experience, meet new people, boost your confidence and voila
you won’t regret doing it in the first place. Beauty pageants are
not all rosy but we can change the face of that and turn them into
something extraordinary and life changing. It should never be
about competition girls but exposure. Until next time my
beautiful readers, Je t’aime.

Mazhindu crowned Miss CUT 2017

by CUT Fate Club

Chinhoyi University of Technology International Marketing student, 21-year-old beauty Tino Mazhinhu was
crowned Miss CUT 2017 taking over from Rumbi 'catness' Chigama at a ceremony that was held at the CUT

hotel last Friday. The event was hosted by Miss Tourism Cut Cassandra Naidoo and male model Sean
Nyemba.

The event running under the theme 'Big Hearts Believe', started off with glitz and glamour on the red
carpet that was hosted by model and actor Conilious Toga at 6 pm. The hall was filled with scores of people

by 7pm. Upcoming songstress Tinaye was the opening act supported by CUT 15, then the introduction of
the panel which comprised of designer Phil Amikani, Z TA's Lindiwe Makoni, former models Lucina Papaya
and Tariro Zinyemba followed and the appearance of escorts on the stage led by Lincoln Shokobishi sent the

expectant crowd into a frenzy.

This year's pageant had 12 contestants including Maritza Dube, Hazel Dzama, Theresa Chibodo, Lisa Mutasa,
Maryln Chitiyo, Sally Gombedza and CUT volleyball starTanya Chakanetsa. Models walked in casual,

traditional, night and swim wear courtesy of designers Nompumelelo Sambangwa, Tapfumaneyi Munenge
and Nandi Fashions. In what has become the norm of modelling contests, most models failed to answer
questions forwarded to them by judges. Hannan Mleya and Tessa Tigere were crowned 1st and 2nd
princess with Alima Mukwasani and Amanda Ncube taking the crowns of Miss People's Choice and Miss
Personality CUT 2017 respectively.

A team of escorts which included 'Mr. CUT King Marcial Samanga, models Ausie Natala, Jabulani Matemba,

the opportunity to showcase their designer suits on the stage.

Young Games Entertainment CEO Brian James, 1st princess Miss Carnival Zimbabwe, Supermodel
actressFormer Miss personality CUT Marylin Zingwe who groomed the giSupermodel-actress and outgoing

a success."

Musicians H20, Bris Mbada, Scrip Mulah, Schingy and main act DobaDon took turns to entertain the crowd.

Young Games Entertainment's Kellenah Haurobi made a speech on behalf of the sponsors and said her

WEAR A CONDOM AND JUST HAVE FUN

It is bad enough that people are dying of
AIDS but no one should die of ignorance.
In remembrance of the relatives and
friends we lost in AIDS, may their souls rest

in eternal peace, and may this be light to the
world that AIDS can destroy families if we let it.
To those fighting AIDS, keep going, it’s not the years in your life that
count, it’s the life in your years, LIVE LIFE, enjoy being the messenger,
letting people know about HIV&AIDS.

AIDS is a tragic disease. Try different positions with the same

COUCH POTATO VS FITNESS FREAK

‘Can i have a beef burger, French fries and a diet coke please?’ says Mandy as she orders from a local
fast food outlet. Mandy is an averagely tall girl weighing 96kgs and she is trying to shed off weight, but
what kind of diet is that? For crying out loud, you don’t lose weight by eating fast food and hiding behind
a diet coke. Just to clear the air, please note that going on a diet doesn’t mean starving yourself but you

can cut down your portions and substitute saturated fats with healthy fats. I don’t condone body
shaming because it’s not right to judge people by how they look. Sometimes it’s not by choice to be fat

or skinny but genetics.

What is a couch potato?

This is someone
who would rather eat, sit and sleep.
This kind of person hates any kind of physical activity and
thinks that exercise is work in play clothes. The name is derived from the fact that these people
normally spent most of their day sitting in front of the TV, with a bowl of popcorn and juice. To them
even a few sit ups can break a person and don’t even mention a weight loss diet to them else you will
disappear faster than you appeared. Though in this group you can find a small number of those with
healthy weight, it is rarely the case.

What is a fitness freak?

I bet very few students fall into this category for different reasons. A
fitness freak is someone who watches his/her weight and exercises
more often than not. They take part in Zumba, dance classes, do
squats, eat more fruit and vegetables and are physically active. Being
a fitness freak is not as hard as people want to make it seem to be.
Exercise will only rid you of fat, lethargy and illness though we see
TORTURE anywhere we see the words Pilates or gym.

Maintaining a healthy weight does not have to be boring and draining but it can be so much
fun and endurable.
 Have thirty minute walks at least twice a week
 Have a 5-minute jog even once a week
 Drink lemon water in the morning (1/2 lemon + 1 glass of water). It fills you with energy and

speeds up metabolism.
 1-2 cups of green tea everyday help get rid of dangerous abdominal fat.
 Cut down or get rid of pre-cooked food or harmful additives like burgers and French fries.
 Sleep for about 7-8 hours a day as it helps stabilize body functioning and burns fat.
 Brush your teeth after eating. It helps you avoid too many snacks.
 You can also look up dance tutorials on YouTube. It doesn’t matter if you have two let feet,

you can actually burn more fat by just dancing. Isn’t that amazing!
 Squats also do wonders in burning fat and giving you a beautiful body shape.
 Eating healthily and exercising is not just about losing weight but is also advantageous in

these ways:
 It works as an antidepressant and reduces stress and anxiety
 It reduces PMS and helps your fertility
 It helps you sleep better, boosts creativity and improves self esteem
 It conquers cramps and protects your bones
 It reduces cravings for bad food and thus fattening your wallet

There are a whole lot of advantages of healthy living so get up dear reader and get your
groove on. What would you rather be, couch potato or fitness freak? The ball is now in
your court.

Habit is what keeps you going.’

How to style 4

In this edition, we are looking at different body shapes and how to dress
according to the body shape focusing on ladies. They are four different types the
apple, pear, rectangular and the hourglass body type. Knowing your body type is

about dressing to look your best. There is no best or worst body type.

Rectangular shape

Waist is smaller than your burst, having curves around the waist and a wide
chest with a bit extra weight around the mid-section.

 Rectangular body type benefits from shaping undergarment, a bra
cup size will balance out your angular features without much effort at all.
 You can pinch in your waist to exaggerate curves by adding a belt to

your dress.
 Wearing miniskirts and bright tights to make the most of your great legs.

This will add more shape to a straight body.

Apple shape

Having wide shoulders or weight is concentrated around mid- section, waistline
having a little definition, thus giving rise to the top and the legs are slimmer.

 Wear tops that drape over any curves and cover with….
 Avoid dresses and belts

 Choose flared pants over skinny pants to help balance out wide
shoulders or heavy upper body.

 Wear bottoms just below your hipbone to draw the attention away
from your waist and try rectangular dresses.

Pear shape

Shoulders are narrow, sloping, ‘curvaceous’ body.
 Avoid tights that narrow your legs

 Balance your top with your bottom. Try wear with tops that accentuate
your shoulders a bit more.

Hourglass shape

Has a defined waist, fat is evenly stored throughout and a slight fuller
bottom.

 Admire your curves and embrace them.
 Direct attention on your curves.

 Embrace a V neck top or dresses, just make sure you do not show
more cleavage than appropriate to the situation

Networking

Networking has long been recognized as a powerful tool for business Ngoni
people and professionals. Knowing more people gives you greater
access, facilitates the sharing of information, and makes it easier to [email protected]
influence others for the simple reason that influencing people you know
is easier than influencing strangers. The creators of LinkedIn, Facebook, 077 272 4422
and Twitter have built their empires on the presumption that their social
networking tools help people build their networks and remain better
connected than ever. Does it follow, then, that social networks, by
making connectivity easier, make leaders more powerful?

Network power depends on how strong your relationships are, on how
much attention you command when you engage people in your network,
and on how attractive you are as a member of other peoples’
networks. If you are known as a source of deep expertise, for instance,
and people can rely on you for expert solutions or creative ideas, you
will be a more attractive network partner than someone who lacks that
expertise. If you know other powerful people and can access them
whenever you need to, you will be a more attractive network
partner. Similarly, if you are in a position of authority in your
organization and can make things happen, you will be a more valued
network partner. Finally, you will have more power in your network
with the people you know best—with long-time colleagues, close friends,
and others with whom you have developed mutual trust and respect.

It may be possible to
build those kinds of
relationships with
people you meet on
social networks, but
it’s unlikely unless
you sustain contact
with them over an
extended period,
have meaningful
exchanges with them,
disclose a lot about yourself and learn much about them, and build the
kind of trusting relationships that normally occur when you have
worked with someone successfully over a period of time.

Social networks like LinkedIn are useful, but they are no substitute for
direct personal connections and the kind of history you develop with
people when they have known you for a long time, when they have
learned to trust you, and when they have come to value the relationship.

The four essential facts to embrace on self......

Mindset - Positive. To learn. To
grow. To share. To contribute.

Body language - Firm. Confident. Strong
and Communicative.

Knowledge - Exhibit what you
know .... Not what you don't
know. Reading n sharing. In

your field.

Voice - Audibly loud, clear n
