Customer Service: The Key to a
Positive Patient Experience

Tracy Bird, FACMPE, CPC, CPMA, CEMC

SPEAKER INFORMATION:
Health care providers who focus on customer service
may experience higher patient satisfaction scores and
reduced medical liability exposure. In addition, satisfied
patients may increase referrals to a health care provider
resulting in improved financial performance. This
program is designed to bring awareness to simple
changes in behavior and communication to enhance the
overall experience of the patient. Health care personnel
at all levels of the organization will benefit from this
presentation.

ANNUAL CHARITY:
Mike Jefferies, Director of Development
for Ronald McDonald House in KC, will
be on hand to offer a short video of how
RMH serves our community. He will
accept our association's donation and
member donations toward their never-
ending wish list. Be prepared to bring
your donation, either items or monetary,
to the January meeting. We also will
install our new board members for 2017.

SHOULD YOU USE OFF THE WALL
QUESTIONS IN AN INTERVIEW?

Google, Inc. tried to answer that question in their
internal study. Their results showed high performing
employees did not score any better on brainteaser
questions than lower performing employees. This
suggests brainteasers are not an effective way to
differentiate between poor and excellent performing
candidates. While this is only one study, it does show the
importance of ensuring the value of any new process
before implementation. Here are some tips to consider
when developing and applying a new interview process
within your company:

• Decide what skills are essential for the job position,
then consider only those skills when crafting
interview questions.

• Develop measurable, behavior-based interview
questions targeted towards those same essential
skills.

• Use systematic scoring criteria and decide what
answers would be deemed unacceptable, acceptable,
and very acceptable behavioral actions.

• Review the questions and scoring criteria with job
content experts to guarantee they are pertinent to
the job.

• Once the interview process has been developed, train
hiring managers on how to successfully implement
this process, collect complete answers, and utilize the
scoring criteria.

• Consistency is key. Make sure all job candidates are
undergoing a consistent interview process, allowing
them to be measured on the same skills and assessed
using the same criteria.

Annual Audit Committee Minutes

November 8, 2016
Held at North Kansas City Hospital, Lewis & Clark Room

The ad hoc Annual Audit Committee met on November 8, 2016 to
review the 2015 financial records of MGMA-Northwest Missouri
association. The committee consisted of Kari Vance, chair,
Barbara Keller, and Scott Sutherland. Treasurer Brad Carney and
Accountant Don Palmer were present to answer any questions or
help find questioned data.

Kari called the meeting to order at 10:58am. The committee was
informed of the items that needed to be reviewed, and followed
the list provided in the Audit Policy procedures set forth by the
Board of Directors.

• A brief review of the audit policies and procedures was made,
noting the appropriate separation of duties and noted that all
the procedures were being followed.

• All 2015 bank statements were reviewed; it was noted that
two board members had initialed and dated each month’s
bank statements.

• Per review of all check registers, it was determined that no
check was written in excess of $8,000 and no checks required
two signatures in 2015. It was noted that checks for larger
amounts were for budgeted contracted services (symposium).
All checks clearly indicate to whom the check was written.

• The committee reviewed all transfers from various accounts
and noted that all was in balance.

• The treasurer had signed only computer-generated checks.
There were no handwritten checks noted. There were no
skipped or voided checks for 2015 to review.

• It was noted the independent contractor arrangements end
on December 31, 2018. Thus, no review was necessary.

After reviewing all documents, the committee found that all
financial records for 2015 were in order. No suggestions or
improvements were noted. The meeting adjourned at 11:14am.

Respectfully submitted,
Kari Vance, President

Changes in
the ACMPE
Certification
Requirements

ACMPE Forum Rep.

New Exam Format in
September 2017

Transition the current essay portion of the exam to
an objectively scored, scenario-based exam.
The revamped exam will present scenarios just as the
current essay exam does. However, instead of
drafting open-ended essay responses to the scenario,
examinees will answer a series of objective questions
about the scenario. ACMPE will convert the current
exam with the help of Castle Worldwide and will
debut the new exam in Sept. 2017. You will not need
to retake the exam to hold your advancement.

Am I Eligible for CMPE?

The College of American College of Medical
Practice Executives have reviewed the current
requirements to become a nominee in the
college and begin the journey toward board
certification and fellowship.
In order to continually elevate the program and
increase its value in the marketplace, nominees
will be required to have a bachelor's degree or
the equivalent of 120 hours of college credit in
addition to two years of healthcare
management experience.
This requirement will take effect January 1,
2019, but will not apply to those who are
already board certified within ACMPE.

The MGMA board approved both changes.
Please see the links forfrequently asked
questions sheet and a flyer that outlines the
crosswalk of changes and how they will impact
nominees and future program enrollees.

2016 Annual Bylaws
Ad Hoc Committee Minutes

November 8, 2016

Past President Barbara Keller and President Kari Vance met on
November 8, 2016 as stipulated in the MGMA-Northwest
Missouri Bylaws. They were tasked to perform a detailed annual
review of the bylaws. Barbara opened the meeting at 9:45am at
the North Kansas City Hospital Lewis & Clark Room.

After an extensive review, the following changes were found.
These changes will be relayed to the Board of Directors at the
December board meeting.

Suggested Changes:

Article II, Section 1 (a): Add the words: “Northwest Missouri”
and “or”. To read: “Individuals engaged in the management of
medical practices in the Northland, Northwest Missouri, or
Kansas City area region…”

Article II, Section 1 (c): Add an “s” to the word relate in the first
sentence. To read: “Individuals who are not qualified as a
Category I or II member, but is employed by a company related
to the medical industry: i.e. insurance company, laboratory
service, PHO employee, etc.”

Article II, Section 1 (d): After the first sentence, add the
sentence to read: “A Life Member must not be able to meet the
criteria of any other category.”

Article IV, Section 7: Delete “as set forth in the Policies and
Procedures of the Association held in the corporate office.” To
read: “The authority and operations of the Association shall be
vested to the Board of Directors and defined from time to time.”

These changes will be presented to and voted on by the
membership at the Annual Business Meeting in December 2016.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:07am.

Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Keller
