Justification to how the tool assesses the focused literacy skill:
McLachlan (2021) stated that assessment helps educators learn about children and
identifies ways to support their learning and development. Checklist is one of the
assessments that is effective to assess children’s literacy skills and the checklist is chosen to
assess print awareness using the Jotform platform. There are some justifications to how
checklist assesses the chosen literacy skill which is print awareness.
1.0 Identify what has to be checked
First of all, a checklist helps teachers identify what has to be checked and avoid missing
important things that need to be assessed. Referring to the activity organized, children will
read a book before they make cards related to the content of the book. Since the teacher
already plans the activity related to print awareness, the teacher is able to list specific
actions that will be assessed while children are doing the activity. For example, based on the
checklist created using Jotform, teachers will observe and analyze children’s actions after
they are given the book and while they are writing on the cards.
2.0 Collect data for future plans/goals.
Secondly, the use of a checklist is also effective to collect data for future plans and
goals. It is because, after the teacher fills in the checklist questions, the teacher is able to
plan the next step of teaching based on the results from the checklist. Referring to the print
awareness checklist, after the teacher finishes answering the yes or no questions, the
teacher should be able to find out children’s level of proficiency from the result and then
recommend the important actions that need to be taken. For example, if the children
misspelled some words while creating the card, the teacher will take note that the children
have difficulties in writing and plan future activities that emphasize writing skills for that
specific child.
3.0 Organize and manage the checklist through editing and formatting
Thirdly, teachers can organize and manage the checklist through editing and
formatting from the tools provided in the Jotform. Meaning that, teachers can modify the
checklist anytime needed to suit activities and children. For example, using the Jotform
platform, there are some elements provided that can help teachers to modify the checklist
such as time picker, QR code, checkboxes, add link and many more. With these elements,
teachers can modify the questions for the checklist, modify the checklist to assess individual
or in group and add additional boxes for comments or suggestions for children. Other than
that, teachers can also add collaborators such as parents or other teachers that can view the
child progression online using this platform.
4.0 Easy to assess
Lastly, this checklist is easy to assess since it can be used online and offline. Rucker,
TJ (2022) stated that modern educators should establish different practices that help
improve academic performance and further enhance student skills, confidence, and
creativity. The teacher can use devices such as smart phone, tablet or laptop while
assessing the children and if the teacher prefers to use hardcopy and write it on paper, the
teacher can save the checklist in pdf and print it out. Furthermore, the data collected online
can be compiled in a spreadsheet so the teacher can analyze the overall results of
assessments in the spreadsheet.
In conclusion, checklists are one of the best assessment tools that help teachers to
foster innovative and advanced literacy teaching.
