Title: Why Eat Fast Food and Its Impact to Health
General Purpose: To inform my audience
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience the reason why eats fast food and its
impact to health.
The kind of attention-getting device I plan to use is: Rhetorical questions,
statistics, quotation
INTRODUCTION
1. Attention-getter: Anywhere you go, there is a good chance there will be a fast-
food restaurant nearby. Certainly, the menu offered is cheap and delicious which
attracts our attention as customers. The mass media often broadcast news on the
issue of fast food which has become a craze among the Malaysian community. This
is very worrying because Malaysians make fast food a trend in life thinking about
the effects of consuming such food. Statistics show that in 2019, 87% of Malaysians
dined out at least once a week in venues ranging from street food stalls and fast-
food restaurants or cafes.
76% of Malaysian survey respondents ordered fast food through food delivery apps
in June 2020 since COVID-19 struck the country. It’s the easy way out of cooking
dinner or grabbing something fast because you did not have time to make anything.
Fast food may taste good, but have you ever thought of the effects it has on your
body? James Blacker once said, they call it fast food because you will reach your
death a lot quicker if you go too fast with it. According to a United Nations
International Children's Emergency Fund or (UNICEF) survey, 12.7 percent of
Malaysian children aged five to 19 years old are obese. 73 percent of deaths in
Malaysia’s government hospitals are due to obesity-related health issues
2. Write specific purpose: So, my name is Nurin Amanda Amani and today, I want
to discuss with my audience the reason why people like to eat fast food and its
impact to the health.
3. Transition: Let’s move now to my first point, which is the first factor why people eat
fast food.
BODY
4. First Point: The bustle of society especially in the city has now prompted them to
choose fast food as it is easily available and prepared. They just have to buy and
heat it. The availability of fast-food restaurants such as KFC, McDonald's, Subway,
and Pizza Hut, has made it easier for them to choose a variety of food dishes
according to their tastes. In addition, canned and packaged food is also a daily
meal option because it only needs to be heated. This causes people not to practice
a healthy lifestyle in daily life. Not only that, the existence of fastfood products
greatly attracts consumers to choose a variety of favourite foods.
This is because various advertisements have been displayed in newspapers and
on television screens. It is said to be very creative which can attract the attention of
children and adults. Fast food products can be found everywhere. For example,
supermarkets, school canteens, and petrol stations also sell food to meet the needs
and wants of customers. Every food product that has been released by the fast-
food chain has received widespread publicity and promotion. This makes people
not want to miss the opportunity to try it for themselves.
The charts show the percentages of the food budget the average family spent on
restaurant meals in different years or between the 1970-2000 periods. We can see
2 indicators where the blue colour is the percentage of food budget spent on
restaurant meals and the red is for home cooking. There is an increase in the
percentage of the blue chart from year to year and this means there is an increase
in terms of spending to buy food at the restaurant's meal or fast-food meals
compared to cooking at home.
5. Transition: Next, I will talk about the second point which is the effect of fast food
intake.
6. Second Point- The effects of fast-food consumption in the community can affect
our health. According to a study by the University of Toronto, Canada, fast food
intake can impair an individual's concentration and memory level. This is because
the brain needs enough glucose to function properly in the body. As we all know, a
lack of nutritious food intake can cause problems to our body for example
constipation problems. Meanwhile, fast food intake can also cause stunted growth
problems, especially in children.
7. This is because the growth of children at the age of 7 to 12 years is fast if they
practice a healthy diet. Imbalanced food intake causes stunted development of
children which causes their height is not the same as their age. This problem can
be overcome if parents focus on their children's eating styles. In addition, the effects
of fast food can lead to obesity. It occurs when a person eats foods that are high in
sugar. An example is ice cream, a bicarbonate drink that has a high percentage of
sugar. Elevated cholesterol in the blood can increase the risk of a heart attack. It
happens to anyone no matter young or old.
8. Write your conclusion: Today I have shared with you the factors of fast food intake
by society as well as its impact. Fast food intake should be reduced and replaced
with healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables so that the body can function
properly. It is emphasized that fast food harms our health if we consume it regularly.
We can adapt the approach set by the Ministry of Health Malaysia by encouraging
the people to practice a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet. Therefore, we as
consumers should be wise in choosing the best food for ourselves to stay healthy
for now and the future.
