about Anbo

We set up Anbo Commercial to provide our UK's construction, design and development
market with a sustainable and authentic Forest to Floor solution.

Our families have been in the timber business since 1988, and today we own material, saw
mills, manufacturing facilities and retail outlets across the USA, China, Australia, Europe and
in the UK. Every day we use our real life experiences in material procurement, manufacturing,
distribution and property development to continuously improve Anbo Commercial from the
ground level up.

We created Anbo Commercial to provide quality hardwood, engineered and solid flooring for
property developers, main and sub-contractors, commercial developers and house builders
in the UK. In the years to come we hope to see Anbo Commercial open up new markets and
opportunities through our robust global operations. We will never rest on our laurels; we will
always seek out new new ways to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers.

from Forest to Floor

Growth
Our timber comes from expertly cultivated and sustained forests in the
USA, France and Romania. We source from Government and Private land
owners with strict policies in place to allow young and newly planted
trees to reach maturity and annual reforestation is always greater than
harvesting.

In 2016 we we joined Anbo’s FSC® approved group. The Forestry
Stewardship Council certification allows customers to identify and
purchase wood from well managed forests confident that they are
helping ensure our forests are alive for generations to come.

Drying
To ensure our hardwood floors last a lifetime we either air dry our timber
for a minimum of 3 months or use a kiln, which speeds up the drying
process. Drying stabilises the wood and this process is essential to the
durability of the finished product.

Manufacturing
We have manufacturing operations near the historic town of Perugia
in rural Umbria, in key cities across China including Shanghai and a
speciality workshop in East London.

Once the wood reaches our manufacturers it must pass through multiple
stages of evaluation. Each log is meticulously scrutinised and graded
before it is converted into planks. Our quality control standards are so
strict that only half of the logs make the cut.

We are active in every step of the forest to floor journey.
This means there are no middlemen involved so we are
able to pass on lower costs to our customers.

PRIME PRIME As the name suggests this is the highest grade. It is also often described
as AB-high grade. High grade woods are cut from the centre of the log. They have
very few knots and those that are present will be small with a sap content level
of less than 5%, and minimal colour variation between the boards. Prime grade
wood flooring gives a highly uniform yet natural look.

SELECT Also described as ABC grade, Select Grading
grade wood features some knots, although
SELECT they are not larger than 30mm. The sap level
in this wood can up to 15% and variation in
colour between planks is more noticeable.

CHARACTER CHARACTER Wood of this grade, often referred to as ABCD grade or mill-run,
is an extremely popular choice for wood flooring. The scattering of knots and
RUSTIC colour variations between the planks give tangible character. There may be holes
naturally present in wood of this grade and like most manufacturers we fill these
COUNTRY with coloured wood.

RUSTIC By far the most popular grade, CD grade or Rustic grade wood has a
noticeably heavy grain, frequent colour variations and many knots of varying
sizes. As with Natural grade wood we fill any holes with coloured wood to give
a smooth finish. Customers choose this wood grade for both the affordability of
the product as well as the distinctive aged look it adds to interior décor.

COUNTRY Boards of this grade have a wavy grain and many noticeable knots.
Splits and holes are also present but are filled with coloured wood. As we will
only ever use structurally sound wood for our flooring products we find that
wood of this grade goes on to make strong and durable boards and the variation
in colour and length gives real character.

choosing the right Finish

Lacquer
Lacquered finished flooring can be either matt or gloss, but all lacquered flooring is
smooth, hard-wearing and low maintenance.
The wood is sprayed with 5 coats of primer and at least 2 top coats of UV cured aluminum
oxide. The result is a beautiful finish which enhances the natural grain of the wood.
We recommend installing a mat and sweeping or vacuuming regularly to remove excess
dust and grit which can lead to scratching. Furniture legs should be protected with felt
pads. Avoid using too much water during cleaning by purchasing a good quality spray
lacquer cleaner.

Natural Oil
Natural oil finished wood has a deep lustre and a smooth to the touch surface. This
finish is achieved by applying oil on to the surface of the wood and buffing it in to the
top layer so it permeates the grain creating a matt sheen. This process is repeated up
to 4 times.

We recommend installing a matt and sweeping or
vacuuming regularly to remove excess dust and
grit which can lead to scratching. Furniture legs
should be protected with felt pads. To prolong the
life of the floor between re-oiling we recommend
cleaning and conditioning the wood with a natural
oil soap.

UV Oil
UV oil finished wood has a deep lustre and a
smooth to the touch surface. This finish is achieved
by applying oil on to the surface of the wood and
buffing it into the top layer so it permeates the grain
then curing under an ultra-voilet light, creating a
satin sheen finish. This process is repeated up to
4 times.

or vacuuming regularly to remove excess dust
and grit which can lead to scratching. Furniture
legs should be protected with felt pads. To
prolong the life of the floor between re-oiling
we recommend cleaning and conditioning the
wood with a natural oil soap.

Brushed
Using a steel brush we remove the soft grain
from the surface layer creating a textured
finish that enhances the natural beauty of the
grain.

Hand Scraped
Using traditional tools the grain is hand scraped along the natural contour of the
wood resulting in a beautiful smooth surface.

Distressed
Wood that has been distressed has an aged and worn appearance. We use a variety
of methods to create a natural looking finish.

Stained
Stain is applied using rollers and then buffed into the wood to penetrate the surface,
it is then sealed with either oil of lacquer.

Smoked
The timber is stored in drying rooms that are filled with ammonia vapour
or “smoke” to darken the appearance.

Carbonised
Baking the timber in a kiln produces a dramatic effect, blackening the
wood and exposing the texture of the grain.

Acclimatisation Explained

The following conditions should always be established before any wood flooring is delivered:

• The building should be completely enclosed with all doors and windows installed
• Final grading should be complete and all drainage should run away from the building
• All wet construction elements should be complete and dry including concrete, plastering and drywall
• Any basement and crawl space areas should be totally dry
• AC and/or heating should be fully functional and have been running for a minimum of 5 days prior to
installation
• Appropriate humidity and temperature inside the building should be achieved

Engineered wood floor boards must be brought into the room where they will be laid at least 5 days prior to
installation. If laying the boards in a new build the climatic condition in the room should have been stabilised at least
3 weeks beforehand and moisture levels should be checked by a certified floor fitter before installation.

Solid wood, or hardwood, floor boards should be properly acclimatised by following the below steps:

• Take delivery of and store the boards in the premises 14 days prior to installation, preferably in the room
where they will be laid
• The boards should be unpacked and stacked on bearers to allow the air to circulate
• The boards should be laid flat at least 300mm from the nearest wall
• Do not place boards near a direct heat source
• All wet trades must have finished and screeds should have dried with moisture levels below 4% and
humidity below 55%. Plaster must be totally dry and painting completed.
• The room should be an average temperature minimum 15 and maximum 25 degrees centigrade and a
relative humidity of 45-65%.
• Floor and wall tiles should have been installed for at least 2 weeks
• All windows and doors should be fitted
• The boards should never be stored in a garage or out building or in a damp room

AftercareExplained

Hardwood (also referred to as real wood or solid wood) floors are a natural, organic material and can last a lifetime
if cared for properly. Physical damage such as scratches and dents are preventable but can also add character over
time.

Deterioration with a lacquered floor finish is quicker; scratches and dents cannot be spot repaired and so the whole
floor must be sanded back to the wood once the lacquered surface is damaged.

A wax or oiled finished floor is far more durable and can be spot repaired if it becomes scratched or damaged.
However over time the scratches, scuffs and dents will add character and beauty to the floor. A waxed floor will
never require sanding or sealing.

Precautionary measures to help preserve a hardwood floor

• Maintain a consistent humidity in the areas where the hardwood floor is laid
• Use waterproof containers and felt pads under potted plants
• Use protective felt pads under furniture that comes into contact with the hardwood floor
• Use pads or straps to avoid rolling heavy furniture, boxes, or appliances over the hardwood floor
• Trim pet’s nails
• Where you have mats and rugs use a good quality pad underneath

Maintenance & Cleaning

• Clean with a soft brush, mop or soft brushed vacuum cleaner
• Remove spillages as soon as possible to prevent stains forming
• Use only speciality hardwood flooring cleaning products such as a non-abrasive rinse-free formulation
floor soap
• Use a spray bottle to apply your floor maintenance products rather than pouring directly on to the surface
• Use the maintenance kit we can provide after we install your floor
• Avoid using steam cleaning machines, this can break down the floor’s protective layer and created
whitened bubbles or blisters

Traditional hardwood floors can be sanded down between 3 to 5 times during their lifetime and should be re-
coated with wax every 3 to 5 years.

• Re-coating will help prolong the life of a floor, and prevent it from showing traffic wear patterns and
surface scratches
• Re-coating is more economical than a complete sanding and refinishing job
• Re-coating takes only one day
• Re-coating involves a thorough cleaning and reapplication of finish

We always recommend consulting a professional before applying hard wax oils.

Under Floor Heating

WHAT WOODS WORK BEST

When installing under floor heating we recommend using an expert fitter. Careful consideration should be given to
ensure a compatible combination of wood flooring boards and under floor heating system.

Engineered wood
As a rule engineered wood and bamboo boards are the best option when using under floor heating systems as the
structure of the wood allows it to handle fluctuating temperatures. Another benefit of using engineered timber is
that, providing the board is of a thickness of over 20mm, it can be laid directly over the heating system as a floating
floor. Boards that are less than 20mm in thickness should be fixed to additional decking material or laid over a
screeded slab to provide extra support.

Solid wood
These woods can work well with under floor heating if they are gently heated and the surface temperature does not
exceed 27°C. If used properly under floor heating can help prevent timber floors from cupping. If using under floor
heating with solid wood it is essential that the moisture content of the timber is around 10% at the time of fitting
and the boards do not exceed 25mm in thickness. Boards should be fixed with screws or glued to battens or joists,
or could be fixed directly on to screed using wood adhesive.

Parquet
Blocks must be bonded directly to the screed or timber deck to ensure good heat transfer. We are happy to offer
personalised advice to customers considering using under floor heating with parquet flooring.

TYPES OF UNDER-FLOOR HEATING

There are two main under floor heating systems, each with their own benefits.

Electrical matting
This system is very easy to fit and is wired via a thermostat. A floating floor will sit above the matting. Electrical
matting tends to give a more even distribution of heat, which prevents hot spots which would cause issues with
de-lamination of engineered wood floors.

Hot water pipe

This works in a similar way to a central heating system in a house. Screed is used to contain the pipes, and all screeds
must be properly checked before fitting the floor to make sure that the humidity of the concrete is below the 75%
level.

INSTALLING UNDER-FLOOR HEATING WITH WOODEN FLOORS

• Air humidity should be stabilised at 40-60%
• Air temperature should be no less than 13°C and the general environment temperature should be
between 18-24°C
• Moisture content of the walls should not exceed 8%
• All windows and doors should be fitted before wood flooring is installed
• All wet materials such as plaster, tile grouting and terrazzo should be dry before wood floors are installed
• New buildings or extensions should be properly ventilated and heated for 10 days before wood floors are
installed
• Radiators and water pipes should be tested before installing wood floors
• Sub flooring should be secure, smooth and flat to within a +/- 3mm over 3 meter radius
• Wooden sub floors must have a moisture content of between 8-10% and within 4% of the hardwood floor
to avoid over expansion of contraction
• Concrete screeds must have a moisture content that is no greater than 75% relative humidity
• A damp-proof layer must be placed underneath any screeded surface
• The underfloor heating should be fully tested and confirmed to be in working order for 2 weeks prior to
installation
• Hot Water Pipe under floor heating systems must be fully commissioned and pressure tested before
fitting the wooden floor
• All under floor heating systems must be calibrated to restrict the surface floor temperature to no more
than 27°C and have a floor probe to prevent temperature exceeding this level
• Under floor heating systems must be turned off during installation and only turned back on 48 hours after
installation
