TO OUR GRADUATING STUDENTS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS WELCOME We warmly welcome all our graduating students, as well as their guests, families and friends to the March 2023 Congregation ceremonies. During the Congregation week, the University will confer degrees on graduate students from the School of Graduate Studies and undergraduate students from all the four Colleges (Basic and Applied Sciences, Education, Health Sciences and Humanities), who completed their programmes of study during the 2021/2022 academic year. After a number of years where Congregation ceremonies were held virtually, we are very happy to, once again, host graduating students and their guests in face-to-face Congregation ceremonies, to give them the opportunity to celebrate this milestone inperson with their colleagues, and in the presence of friends and family. You are a very special cohort as your graduation takes place during the 75th Anniversary of the University. The theme for the anniversary celebration is, “Nurturing Resilience: Adopting Technology, Embracing Humanism”. Indeed, we salute all graduating students because you have, no doubt, exhibited resilience, fortitude and perseverance by working so hard through the uncertainties of the global pandemic and its associated problems, to complete your studies successfully. May this be only the beginning of your success stories.
MARCH 2023 CONGREGATION CEREMONY - SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES 9 Efforts have been made to ensure that all the activities that take place during the ceremonies are streamed live via YouTube (UniversityGhana), to afford graduands’ friends and families who cannot be here in person, to join us virtually. 16 MARCH 2023 CONGREGATION CEREMONY - SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES Dear Graduands, family and friends of graduands, and all others here present for this great occasion. On behalf of the Board of the School of Graduate Studies, and the Provosts of all four colleges of the University of Ghana, namely: the Colleges of Basic and Applied Sciences, Education, Health Sciences, and Humanities, I welcome you all to the Congregation Ceremony of March 2023. While this ceremony has delayed relative to the planned schedule, it in no way diminishes the importance that we attach to it. The School of Graduate Studies’ mandate is to work with all academic units and the University of Ghana Computing Systems to admit students, give them the best training in the respective academic programmes and graduate them once all requirements are met. We take this responsibility very seriously, as graduate students constitute a key success factor for the achievement of the University’s vision of becoming a research- intensive University. The graduation of students is an important milestone of this University, so we share in the joy of all our graduating students, together with their families. The significant adjustments that students have had to make even as the University works to bring back some normalcy to the academic calendar, following the COVID-19 engendered disruptions have not gone unnoticed. Additionally, the economic challenges in the last year in particular, have required major sacrifices by our students, who have shown resilience by pushing on with their research and studies. The opportunity to hold this ceremony once again therefore gives us every reason to rejoice and give thanks to the Almighty God. For this congregation ceremony, the School of Graduate Studies, together with the four Colleges, would be presenting about 2940 graduands, including 106 PhDs. MESSAGE FROM DEAN Prof. R. D. Osei In these very difficult times, this achievement of our graduands is a source of pride and a cause to celebrate and to give thanks to the Almighty God. We are proud of our graduands for this success and for giving us a reason to congregate and celebrate once again. We are truly proud of you and will urge you to proceed with your lives and careers in truth and integrity and make the University of Ghana proud of you. May God abundantly bless us all.

MARCH 2023 CONGREGATION CEREMONY - SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES 19 PROFILE OF VALEDICTORIAN Ammishaddai completed his Junior Secondary School at Datus Complex School and is a proud ‘Odade3’ from the prestigious Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon. He then proceeded to obtain a Diploma in Education from the Mount Mary College of Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Education, Winneba in 2014. He began his teaching career at Pupuni L/A J.H.S.; a small public school in a budding community at Akosombo. He was, after a year, posted to Nnudu-Aboasa L/A J.H.S., another small community in the Akwamu area between 2008 and 2010. He went for further studies to enhance his knowledge and skills to better serve the nation and contribute his quota to the attainment of the SDG 4 which aims at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Ammishaddai is very passionate about impacting society in education, especially nourishing the rich young minds of our future leaders. His quest is to maximize the potential of our youth and instill confidence in the minds and spirits of the younger generation to realize their full potential and be able to participate effectively in the global community as proud Africans. It is with this desire that he embarked on the journey to obtain a Master of Arts degree in Leadership and Educational Management to update his knowledge and skills to be in a better position to provide quality education to our youth. The first challenge he encountered in his early days as a teacher was the low levels of proficiency in the English Language, lack of interest in reading and general low self-esteem amongst the students. These, he realized, Ammishaddai Agyemang Osei Friday, March 24, 2023 (Second Session) could be due to their background and location and he set out to find a workable solution to these challenges which was adversely affecting their academic performance. In a bid to provide solutions to these major challenges, he initiated a Readers and Debaters Club in the public schools he served and led them to win several competitions with neighbouring schools. Most public schools lacked library facilities, so he encouraged his students to use the nearest community libraries. Debates, quiz competitions, speech and prize giving days, field trips, excursions, and sporting activities were the interventions provided to increase their level of confidence and participation in curricular and co-curricular activities. He really enjoys working with students from underprivileged communities. All they needed to shine was compassion and leadership to reach their ultimate dreams and aspirations. Mr. Osei’s journey does not end here. He grew up with a philosophy passed on to him by his father which says, “reach for the skies, so that when you fall, you will have the clouds to support you”. Our generation is of the view that the sky is only the beginning. The burning desire to live up to the deep rooted ‘Odade3’ legacy cannot be overemphasized and that is to reach the highest echelon of one’s career and spread one’s branches far and wide like the big baobab tree. To build a strong solid foundation to take our places in the future of our country. The next step up for him is to pursue a PhD to solidify his chosen path in academia. The ultimate is to develop a curriculum that will shift from the paradigm of Eurocentrism to a more tailored formal education to suit our African culture and heritage. To instill pride and confidence in our race to be able to participate fully in global development.
