Unit 3
1.3 Thai Manners
Thai etiquette refers to verbal behavior that is considered polite by time for
people in Thai society. This is because people in Thai society live together as
a group and have been around for a long time. The ancestors of Thai people
tried to modify manners based on the characteristics of traditional Thai people,
Buddhism, climate, the culture of Thais and foreigners and then set up a
practice until it became a model and a guideline for the next generation of
Thai people to practice continuously.
✓ Showing respect
✓ Greetings
In both a formal and informal situation, Thai people greet each other with
the word “sawadee” followed by “kah” for females and “kraap” (soft r) for
males.
It is normal to refer to someone of a perceived higher status by the title
“Khun” (Mr/Ms) followed by their first name. People of the same age or who
are close friends will omit the use of the title Khun.
Generally, nicknames are only used when invited to do so. In an
international context, a handshake is an acceptable greeting. However, a male
may only shake a female’s hand if she extends it to him.
The wai greetings are accompanied by the gesture known as a “wai”,
which is the placing of two palms together, with fingertips touching the nose.
44
SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNERS MATERIALS GRADE 6
Unit 3
A wai indicates the level of respect for another person and is an
acknowledgement of seniority. A person should bow their head with their
palms pressed together to indicate respect. The depth of the bow and the
level of the hands represents the level of respect.
Three Types of Wai
A senior person may politely wai in return to
a person who is younger or subordinate to them.
This is usually done with their hands at chest level
(fingertips not touching the face) and only the
slight bowing of the head, resembling a nod. This
wai is known as a “rap wai”, it is an acknowledgment of the other person. To
indicate respect for parents, teachers, and the elderly, the pressed palms of
the wai should be higher so the thumbs come into contact with the nose and
the fingertips sit between the eyebrows.
There is a fourth type of wai reserved for Buddha images, monks, and the royal
family that involves prostration. This wai is only for religious or royal contexts.

Thailand has many ethnic minority groups often known as ‘hill tribes’ which
has become a general term used for any of the various ethnic groups who
mostly inhabit the high mountainous northern and western regions of Thailand
which is covered by thick forests in some areas. Recently some people have
started instead using the term ‘Highland Thais’. Some of them came here as
a course of natural migration and some of them came as refugees following
unrest in neighboring countries. There are many groups and subgroups but
there are 7 main recognized groups: Karen, Hmong/Meo, Akha, Lama, Lisu,
Lahu/Mesur and Palaung. Hmong/Meo are renowned today for their colorful
hemp and batik textiles which has made them quite wealthy.

Producers and Consumers
Who are people who transform resources into goods and services?
1.1 The Role of a Good Producer
A producer is an economic unit that takes the inputs of production into
goods and processes to meet the needs of consumers with profit as the goal
of operation. Quality manufacturers play an important role as follows:
1. A good producer should have responsibility e.g. treating
wastewater before releasing it into rivers and canals and
participating in activities to conserve natural resources and
preserve the environment as appropriate.
2. A good producer should plan its operations before doing any
activities such as set clear directions, study problem conditions
and constantly reevaluate to minimize errors and losses in
response to any potential incidents.
57
SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNERS MATERIALS GRADE 6
Unit 4
3. A good producer is environmentally conscious. Nowadays there is
the current global warming problem which is caused by increasing
greenhouse gases from human activities e.g. burning of various
fuels, transportation and the emission of toxic gases from industrial
plants. Quality producers should pay attention to the environment.
4. A good producer should have moral principles. A good producer
produces quality goods, sells legal goods and must be sincere to
the consumers.
1.2 The Producer’s Attitude to Resource Use
Attitude is a way of feeling, thinking or behaving towards other persons
or things. Good producers should have a positive attitude to produce efficient
products while using resources effectively.

SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNERS MATERIALS GRADE 6
Unit 4
1.3 Consumer’s Behavior
In order to achieve maximum satisfaction for consumption, consumers
should consider the principles of consuming goods and services as follows:
1. Necessity: A good consumer must consider the necessity first e.g.
between the four factors of living and products for luxury and
comfort.
2. Usefulness: When buying food, for example, a good consumer should
take into account the health benefits and cleanliness.
3. Savings: Before buying products and services, consumers should
check whether the quantity and price are reasonable and fair or not.
Compare prices before buying.
4. Safety: At present, the technology in production has progressed a lot.
Sometimes manufacturers may use objects that are harmful to health
for some purpose such as to make the product colorful and beautiful
or to make the product durable. Therefore, before deciding to
purchase goods and services, the buyer should first consider the
product label for its components and the expiry date.

Sustainable Use of Resources
Why is using solar energy a good thing?
2.1 Meaning and Necessity of Resources
The goal of sustainable development is to provide resources for the use
of present populations without compromising the availability of those
resources for future generations, and without causing environmental damage
that challenges the survival of other species and natural ecosystems.
Resources are anything that is used in the production of products or
providing of services. It includes the supply of money, materials, staff,
and other assets that can be drawn on by a person or organization in
order to function effectively. This includes all kinds of natural resources
Labor means manpower including human wisdom
Capital is the result of savings and investment including tools,
machinery and raw materials.
Entrepreneur refers to the person responsible for managing and
operating the resources used to produce goods and services.
62
SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNERS MATERIALS GRADE 6
Unit 4
Resources are essential to human life as they are the source of raw
materials that must be used in the production process.
Many of the resources we use are ‘unsustainable’, there is a limited
amount and once it is used up, there will be no more for example ‘fossil fuels’
which were created by dead animals over a long period of time. These include
coal, oil and natural gas.
Obtaining and using them causes a
lot of pollution which is bad for the
environment. Natural resources are central
to human wellbeing. We cannot live without
the clean air we breathe, the plants we eat,
the water we drink, the gas in our cars and
the electricity that makes modern appliances operate. However, over
exploitation of natural resources leads to dwindling supplies for the future.
These days people are trying to find ways to produce energy in a
‘sustainable’ and environmentally conscious way including solar, wind and
water energy. Big companies are keen to appear ‘green’ for their public image
and talk about replanting trees and trying to become ‘carbon neutral’.
2.2 Principles and How to Make the Most of Resources
Rethink – think about what you are buying. Do you really need it? Can it be
reused? Is it repairable and recyclable? Try to make environmentally
friendly choices.

Reduce the amount of rubbish you put into landfills by buying items that

Repair or upgrade items instead of throwing them away and getting new
ones. Put some better parts into your old computer and keep the parts that

one.
Reuse old items by ‘upcycling’
them into something new for
example turning an old tennis
racket into a mirror or making an
old skateboard into a table.
Regift- If you buy something which is not what you expected or someone
gives you something that you don’t want, instead of throwing it away, give
it to someone else who would like to have it and can use it.
Recycle everything you can. Look for recycle marks on everything you
throw away and make sure that especially all paper products, glass and
aluminum are sent to the recycling center. Leftover food scraps can be
composted and put on the garden.

Relationship between Economic Units
Humans will live together as a society for life
because no one can produce everything they

activities.
1.1 Relationships between the producers, the consumers, the
banks, and the government
Economic units are the unit or group of people that carry out economic
activities. These activities include production, consumption and distribution of
goods and services. The economic unit consists of households, businesses,
banks, and the government.
• Household units refer to a person or group of people living in the same

1.3 Consumer’s Rights
Consumer Protection Act, B.E. 2522 (1979)
Consumer Rights are consumer protections that encourage businesses
to produce products and services that will be beneficial and safe for
consumers.
The consumer has the following rights of protection.
1. The right to receive correct and sufficient information and description
as to the quality of goods or services;
Consumers can make wise decisions only if they have the
information they need. Businesses are required to provide certain
details about their products. For example, drug companies must list the
complete contents of every medicine. Packaged foods must show all
ingredients, with the main one listed first. Companies provide this
information through product labeling.
2. The right to enjoy freedom in the choice of goods or services;
Businesses compete with each other to
sell their products to consumers. They
offer new products, lower prices, higher
quality, or improved services to get you
to choose their products. Competition
provides choice.

3. The right to expect safety in the use of goods or services;
All products should be safe for the
consumer when used correctly. In
addition, the government expects
businesses to provide specific
detailed instructions on how to
properly use the product. Product
liability is the legal responsibility that manufacturers have to make a safe
product. For example, tools and appliances must include safety
devices for your protection.
4. The right to receive a fair contract;
Consumers who have complaints about products or services
have a right to be heard. Businesses rely on customer satisfaction. The
purpose of the customer service department is to listen to the concerns
of customers.
5. The right to have an injury considered and compensated in accordance
with the laws on such matters or with the provision of this Act;
Sometimes products do not work properly after they are
purchased. Usually if a customer takes a defective item back to a store
with a receipt, the business will replace it or issue a refund. If a business
cannot or will not correct a problem, and if the manufacturer will not
help, a government agency might be your next step.
