This book is dedicated to my little hoots;
Wyatt, Fenway, and Jacoby.

The sun rose in the sky, it’s light peeking
through Ewie’s curtains.

“Ewie! Ewie, dear! Time to wake up!”,
hooted his mother from down the hall.

It was a very important day. Today Ewie
would finally get to go to school!

Ewie hopped out of bed and followed the
smells of breakfast down the hallway to the

kitchen.

“Good morning, sweetheart.”, Ewie’s mom
said. “I hope you’re hungry!”

Ewie brushed his teeth and tried to brush his
feathers, but they wouldn’t stay down. He
sighed and put a hat on his head.

He grabbed his backpack that his mom had
set out for him and headed to the front door

where his dad waited.

“Hey there kiddo. Why so glum?”, his father
asked when he reached the doorway.

“Oh. Well. Dad? Are you sure you and mom
can’t stay at school with me?”, Ewie felt like

he was going to cry.

“A little nervous?”, his dad put his wing
around Ewie. “I promise once you get there

and get settled in, you won’t even notice
we’re gone. I also bet that you will see other
owlets there too. You’ll make fast friends!”

His mother joined them as they walked down
the path to the school.

“Do you have all of your things Ewie?”, Ewie
nodded slowly. “Ok, then. Let’s get going!”

As the family walked along, Ewie’s mom and
dad tried to get him to talk, but Ewie stayed

silent. The closer to school they got, the
more he felt tears welling up in his eyes.

Finally, they arrived at the school house.
There was a small crowd of other mommy and
daddy owls and their young owlets waiting for
the teacher to arrive.

A lot of owlets were hopping around and
weaving through their parents’ wings. They

didn’t seem afraid at all!

Ewie peeped up at his parents. His mom
shooed her wings at him and his dad smiled.

“Go on, little buddy. Have fun.”

Ewie began to hop away with his friends,
but quickly turned around and gave his

parents a big owl hug.

As he hopped off with his friends, Ewie
thought, maybe school won’t be so bad after

all.

1. Why was Ewie so sad about going to school? How did you feel on your first

2. What is something that made Ewie feel better about going to school? If you
knew Ewie, how would you cheer him up and help him be excited about
school?
