RSMS NEWS

October 8, 2018

We are excited to inform you that Infinite Campus has two new and improved mobile apps: Campus Student (for
students) and Campus Parent (for parents). You may download your free app for real-time access to grades,
assignments, attendance, schedules, announcements and more. However, these apps have been delayed by IC due
to bugs being worked out. We will forward information as we get it. Thank you for your patience.

If you are using the old Infinite Campus app, please download the new app. The old app will no longer be supported.

Please send your child's $35 student fee in as soon as possible. This is a board-approved fee that helps cover the
cost of the student agenda books, field day, classroom supplies, technology, and any other additional needs for the
students.

Parents, at your earliest convenience, please complete and return all forms that came home with your student at the
beginning of the school year. All of the information is very important. Thank you for your attention to this.

Safety reminders for our students and staff:

1. Backpacks should be in lockers or an assigned classroom. Students should not carry backpacks around
during the school day.

2. Phones should be turned off and kept in the student’s locker. With the teacher’s permission, students may
access phones.

3. Agendas should be used for hall passes. If no agenda is available, teacher should provide student with a
note.

4. Dress code rules should always be followed.
5. Earbuds should be in student’s pocket or out of site, unless student has teacher’s permission to use in

class.
6. Lines will continue to be used to move students to and from class. This is for time efficiency and safety.
7. Doors and windows to the outside should not be propped open or left unlocked.

RSMS Student Dress Code

The purpose of the dress code is to help create a positive learning environment. Students need to be dressed
comfortably and appropriately.

1. All shorts need to be dollar bill length, turned long ways from the bend at the back of the knee, all the way
around.

2. Athletic shorts need to be dollar bill length, turned long ways from the bend at the back of the knee, all the
way around.

3. No sleeveless shirts or sleeveless dresses.
4. No sheer, mesh, or lace tops are allowed (even with an undershirt). Lace sleeves are allowed.
5. Dresses, skirts, and tunic tops worn without opaque tights, leggings, jeggings, or anything under them,

must be flamingo length all the way around (student stands upright, bends the knee until lower leg is
parallel to the floor, bottom of clothing must touch the calf).
6. Dresses, skirts, and tunic tops worn with opaque leggings, jeggings, and yoga pants, need to be dollar bill
length, turned long ways from the bend at the back of the knee, all the way around. Leggings are only
allowed to be worn in this fashion (with a dress, skirt, or tunic over them following the dollar bill
rule).
7. Jeans cannot have any holes, rips, or frays in them.
8. Sweatpants, joggers, and wind pants are allowed.
9. No clothing with inappropriate pictures, language, suggestive messages, innuendos, obscenities, excessive
blood/gore, advertisements related to drugs/alcohol/tobacco, or gang emblems.
10. No head coverings to include: caps, hats, beanies, bandannas, headscarves, combs, rakes, rags, picks, sweat
bands, or rollers.
11. No house shoes or slippers.
12. No chains or other jewelry items that may be perceived as dangerous or as a weapon.

Heavy coats, book bags, backpacks, pouches, purses, fanny packs, lunch bags, etc., must be stored in the student’s
locker during the school day.

If any type of clothing worn in the building leads to confusion or misunderstanding, the administration will make the
final decision as to the clothing’s appropriateness. Interventions and assistance will be given to help students reach
compliance. Disciplinary action will be taken for repeated issues of non-compliance/defiance.

If you have any questions about the dress code or the appropriateness of a particular article of clothing, please reach
out to the front office (502-570-2390) in order to be connected to an administrator.

For Physical Education Classes: Shirts must meet the same dress code as above. Athletic shorts need to be dollar
bill length, turned horizontally, from the bend at the back of the knee, all the way around.

Disciplinary Procedures: In any situation regarding dress code, the school administration will make the final
decision as to the appropriateness of the clothing. Disciplinary action will be taken for repeated issues and/or non-
compliance/defiance. Students who are out of dress code will call home with an administrator to request that a
change of clothes be brought to school. If a change is unable to be provided, the Youth Service Center may assist
the student by providing a change of clothes. Multiple dress code violations will result in a discipline
referral. Students out of dress code may not return to class until they are in approved clothing.

Attention car riders: Students should not be getting out of the car in an area other than the drop-off line. This
includes the parking lot. Additionally, students may not exit the building at dismissal to walk out into the parking
lot without a parent. This is not a safe area at this time.

Our school doors open at 8:10. If your student is not part of our early morning program, he/she should not be
dropped off until 8:10 or after. The student should not get out of the car in the morning until teachers and staff are
outside and the buses have started unloading.

Important:

Parents, we need you to know that students are not allowed to have any medicines (other than emergency
medications permitted by their doctor) on their person. So, they may not have even common medications like
Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, allergy medications, medicated creams or cough drops. Having said that, if the student has
an ongoing illness, the parent may fill out paperwork at school and bring a new, unopened container of medication
to be administered by our nurse.

According to our Scott County Discipline Code, medication violations may be subject to disciplinary action;
including, but not limited to suspension or expulsion.

ATTENDANCE

As stated in our agenda, “Students are considered tardy if they do not arrive in their PEACE class by 8:30 a.m.
or if they leave school earlier than 3:25.” The regular school calendar allows students to be off during the summer
months as well as holidays, fall break, spring break, Christmas break and teacher professional days. Therefore,
absences for family vacations when school is in session will be recorded as “unexcused.” Since classroom time is a
high correlate for learning, parents are strongly encouraged to plan vacations around the school calendar.

Notes shall include phone numbers to assist attendance personnel in verifying information. All notes of excuse shall
be turned into all appropriate person within five (5) school days of the student’s return to school. If a note is not

received within five (5) days after returning to school, the absence or tardy will be considered unexcused. The

principal/designee shall determine whether the absence is excused. The following are valid reasons for an excused
absence:

 Child was ill
 Death or severe illness in immediate family (covered by parent notes)
 Religious holiday
 Court appearance (please attach excuse)
 Kentucky State Fair (limited to one day per KRS)
 Departure of parent/guardian called to active military duty (military form required to be completed from

school)
 Visitation with parent while on military duty stationed outside country (school form required to be

completed)

BUS PASSES

If the student is riding the bus with another student, that student must be in our building and both students must
bring a note from their parent, with the bus number on the note and the time this will be effective (one day, as
needed, for school year, etc.). Bus passes should be brought to the office first thing in the morning.

Other transportation changes must be made by 1:45 p.m. in order to guarantee delivery to the student. Oftentimes,
due to temporary schedule changes, testing, rallies, etc., it is difficult to track down students. Taking care of these
issues in advance makes our school day run much more smoothly. It is always our ultimate goal to get each and
every student safely to their destination every day. Thank you for your help in making this happen.

EARLY MORNING

Did you know that a before-school, early-drop-off program is available for your use at RSMS? Students can be
dropped off at school as early as 7:10 to play basketball, socialize, study or read. The cost for this program is $6.00
daily or $25.00 for the week, in addition to an annual registration fee. Additionally, these payments are tax-
deductible on your itemized tax return.

If you are interested in using this program for your student daily or as needed, please email
[email protected] for additional information.
