for pet owners are for the health and safety of all residents. Pet owners need to respect the property and rights of their

the association. Pet guidelines can be found in the Policy and Regulation book under Policy #5450 - Pets.

Handicap Parking:

We have residents in our community whose accessibility to the clubhouse is severely limited if a handicap parking

space is not available to them. If you have a handicap placard and your handicap does not prevent you from utilizing a

non-restricted parking space, we would appreciate your doing so.

We ask that you honor the needs of our handicapped residents.

Modification Requests:

If you wish to make any exterior modifications to your home, please contact the Property Management Office to inquire if

a Modification Request Application needs to be submitted to the Architectural Control Committee for review and approval.

There will be occasions when residents retain landscaping or contracted services to work on their homes. There are several

adopted guidelines, and they are available in the Property Management Office. These adopted guidelines are included in a

Modification Request Application.

The following new residents joined us in January-February 2020
JoAnn and Joseph Torre from Old Bridge, NJ
Abbe and Gary Lasker from Brooklyn, NY

I am happy to say that we have recovered from a wonderfully mild winter, the warmest winter on record according
to the meteorologists. I hope I am not jinxing this by writing this article in Mid-March. We have changed our clocks, so
our days are longer and brighter now, and by the time you read this article, spring will have sprung! With spring comes
Easter and Passover, a wonderful occasion for families to gather in celebration.

In mid-May, the Welcome Committee, with approval from the Board of Trustees, will be hosting an event for our new
residents that have joined us since November 2019. If you are part of this group, you will be receiving an invitation to
this event which will require an RSVP. This event will give you (our new residents) an opportunity to learn more about
“your” new home in this wonderful and active community. You will also get to meet some Board members, many of
your new neighbors and make some new friends as an added bonus.

Our snowbirds are beginning their migration back to NJ, and we hope they all return in good health and happy to
be back in Metedeconk Lakes.

If you have any questions about any of our events or activities, please do not hesitate to contact me at elinorgoldberg@
optonline.net or at 732-431-9455.

Wishing all of our residents and very Happy Easter, and a joyous and sweet Passover!

METEDECONK REMEMBERS All At No Cost To You.
BY JUDY MUSCHLA
ads-6432
Ten events are listed below, one from each decade of
the twentieth century. These events are related to sports, April 2020 Metedeconk Moments 9
music, television, music, history, and famous people.

Although some categories overlap, each event took
place during the month of April during a different decade.
Your task is to match each with the decade in which it
occurred. For an added challenge, try to determine the
exact year.

Hope you have as much fun with this as I had writing
it. Look for the answers on the Solutions Page.
1. An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale

shook the town of San Francisco, California. Thirty
thousand homes were either partially or entirely
destroyed and an estimated 3,000 were reported dead.
The earthquake set off a series of fires which swept
through the city.
2. Academy Award winning American film and stage
actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco.
3. Gene Autry recorded the popular song Back in the
Saddle Again. Several decades later, the rock band
Aerosmith recorded a song that shares the same title.
4. The first baseball game at Yankee Stadium was played
and the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1.
5. The US Senate backed a treaty to transfer the Panama
Canal to the control of Panama. The building of the
Panama Canal was started by the French in 1880, but
in 1904 the US took over the construction of the canal
which was completed 10 years later.
6. A truck full of explosives destroyed the Alfred P.
Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
killing 168 people. (In 1997, Timothy McVeigh was
convicted of the bombing and on June 11, 2001, he
was executed by lethal injection.)
7. Carousel opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York
City.
8. The Coca-Cola Company announced it changed its
formula for Coke and was known as New Coke.
(Less than 6 months later, they returned to the original
formula.)
9. Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed
when his parachute failed to deploy during his Soyuz
I spacecraft landing.
10. Great Britain’s Royal Air force was founded.

Easter & Passover Baked Goodies

First, I would like to wish everyone a Blessed Holiday whether you are celebrating Easter or Passover. After the
religious celebration the next part of the holiday is the FOOD. I am of Italian descent, and Pizza Rustica a/k/a Easter
Pie is a must for this holiday. My mother was an amazing cook, but not a baker, so our Easter Pie was made by another
dinner guest or purchased. I follow my Mom with my cooking skills, so no baking for me. I found this recipe on-line
and it looks like it conforms to the type of Easter Pie I am used to and enjoy. So, anyone who tries it please let me know
how it turns out (I will gladly accept a taste).

My dear friend, Carol Ring (not a Metedeconk resident) makes a wonderful Passover Sponge Cake. She makes
it year-round and serves it with fresh berries and whipped cream. It is so delicious, light and fluffy… seconds please!
Carol tells the story of the moist and tall Sponge Cake that her Grandmother was known for. Unfortunately, she lived
across the country from Carol, so she didn’t have the luxury of working along-side her to make it. She watched her
prepare it, but unfortunately not often enough. Carol decided to make it for a Passover dinner at her future in-laws who
were not known for having homemade desserts. So, what sounded like a good idea turned out to be a sponge cake that
sank miserably and looked terrible. Thankfully it tasted great. They were very understanding; Carol married their son
and perfected the recipe over the years. It may not always come out perfect, but no matter what… it always tastes good.

You don’t have to celebrate either holiday to prepare and enjoy one, or both, of these recipes. It might be a good idea
to make both of them for your holiday celebration. Happy Easter, and Happy Passover, and just plain happiness to all...

Italian Easter Pie – Pizza Rustica

An Italian Easter Pie full of cooked ham, salami, cheese and hard-boiled eggs. A must for every
Easter celebrating table! Prep time - 30 Mins, Cook time - 50 Mins = Total time - 1 Hour 20 Mins

Note: Keep the cubed or crumbled meat consistent in size; each mouthful should have a blend
of flavors, not be overwhelmed by one in particular. Serves: 10-12

Crust Ingredients Filling Ingredients
3 eggs 3 cups part-skim ricotta or basket cheese
2 tablespoons water (available at Italian specialty stores)
2 tablespoons olive oil 3 eggs, beaten
2 cups all-purpose flour 1-pound shredded mozzarella cheese
1 teaspoon baking powder ½ cup chopped fresh parsley
Flour for dusting ½ teaspoon ground pepper
3 hard-boiled eggs, cubed
1 egg
1 tablespoon water

Optional Filling Ingredients (use some or all of these to personalize your pie)
½ pound cubed ham or capicola
1-pound sweet Italian sausage, casing removed, fried (not overly browned) and crumbled
¼ pound chopped prosciutto
⅓ pound pepperoni
⅓ diced Genoa salami
¼ cup grated Romano cheese
Crust Preparation
1. In a small bowl, beat the eggs, water, and oil; set aside.
2. In a large bowl, sift the flour and baking powder. Make a well in the center.

10 April 2020 Metedeconk Moments

3. Gradually pour the egg mixture into the center. Using a fork, incorporate the egg mixture into the flour until it forms
a ball. Cover with a kitchen towel and set aside for 10 minutes as you prepare the pie ingredients.

4. Knead the dough until silky smooth, form into a ball, and wrap in plastic wrap.
5. Pie Preparation is next
6. Pie Preparation
7. In a large bowl, combine the ricotta, beaten eggs, mozzarella, parsley, pepper and optional ingredients. Add the

hard-boiled eggs last.
8. Divide the room-temperature dough in half. Roll out on a well-floured surface to fit a 10-inch deep-dish glass pie

pan (about 14 inches). Fold the dough in quarters and place in the pan, unfold, then prick the dough with a fork.
9. Scoop the filling mixture into the pan and spread evenly.
10. Beat one egg with the tablespoon of water. Brush the edge of the dough with the egg mixture.
11. Roll out the remaining dough to a size extending over the top of the pie. Fold the dough in quarters and place over

the filling, then unfold. Pinch the top and bottom crusts together and fold over the edge of the pie.
12. Cut slits in the top crust, then brush the entire top crust with the egg mixture.
13. Bake on a cookie sheet (to catch any filling that seeps out) at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes, until the crust is golden.
14. Allow the pie rest for at least one hour before cutting. The pie can be served warm or at room temperature. It can be

stored in the refrigerator and freezes well.

Passover Sponge Cake, From Regina Schonfeld
10 large eggs, separated
1 ½ cups sugar, divided
¾ cup cake meal
3 Tablespoon potato starch
¾ teaspoon salt
3 ounces orange juice with orange zest
Combine ¾ cup sugar, cake meal, potato starch, and salt – set aside. Separate eggs, putting egg yolks into large 12”
bowl. Beat egg yolks until light in color. Add dry ingredients to egg yolks – beating until well blended. Add orange
juice and zest. Set aside.
(Note: After about half of the dry ingredients have been added, you can alternate adding the wet and the dry ingredients.)
Beat egg whites until they form soft peaks. Slowly add remaining ¾ cup sugar, mixing thoroughly before adding
more sugar. Take about one cup of the beaten egg whites and add to the egg yolks – mix thoroughly. Then add about half
of the remaining beaten egg whites and carefully fold together – being careful not to stir or beat. Add the remaining egg
whites, continue being careful not to stir or beat.
Put into ungreased 9” tube pan. Use a knife to cut through batter to distribute evenly and eliminate air pockets. Bake
at 325° for 60-65 minutes. (Cake will spring back when pressed lightly with finger.) Invert immediately after removing
from oven. Let cool completely before removing from pan – about 1 ½ hours. Use a plastic spatula to loosen cake from
the pan.

The Shalom Club Presents
The Vinnie Medugno/ Maria Schultz Show

May 16, 2020 at 8 PM

Vinnie Medugno's name first came to my attention when residents saw him appearing with Cousin Brucie at the PNC
Arts Center. They all told me that I must sign him for a show at our community. Last year I saw him entertain, and that
convinced me to sign him up for a Shalom show.

In the Fall of 2019, he appeared at Westlake, so I contacted the person who arranged for him to appear. He told me
that Vinnie was a great entertainer, very charismatic, and he would put on a very enjoyable show. Whether hosting or
performing this young, good looking personality takes the stage and commands it. Vinnie loves entertaining audiences
at stage shows, and concerts. He has opened for some of the biggest names in the solid gold oldies, and Rock n' Roll
genres. Opening for Vinnie is the very funny comedienne Marla Schultz. Both performers have appeared at other Shalom
Club shows in New Jersey.

If you wish to attend this show place your checks for $18 per person, made out to FSML, in the Shalom drawer from
May 1, 2020 to May 5, 2020. If we are over sold by May 5., a management supervised lottery will be held. If space is
still available after May 5, friends and family may attend at a cost of $20 pp.

BUCKET LIST

BY PATRICIA SCIMECA

You say you want to do WHAT??? That’s the response I got when I said
I wanted to go skydiving. Yes, that is what I did a few weeks ago while in
Aruba. We go to Aruba every year, and for years I have looked up at the sky
and watched as people floated down on a parachute, then out of my sight line
landing behind the high-rise hotels. It has always fascinated me and every
year I said, “I want to do that someday”. Well, this is the year I did it, and
it was absolutely AWESOME!!!

The year 2019 was very challenging for me, dealing with cancer and
chemotherapy. But I survived it, and now am in remission on maintenance
chemotherapy. It hasn’t been easy; it is not permanent… but I am still here
to write about something I have wanted to do for a very long time. I never
had a formal Bucket List but there have been things I wanted to do that, thankfully, I have been able to accomplish.
Skydiving was one of them and after surviving last year’s medical issues I decided, this is the year to do it.
I tried not to tell too many people about my upcoming jump, but the Aruban timeshare network is “kind-of” like
Metedeconk… tell one person and everyone knows. Because we have gone to the same time share for over 35 years,
we know many people and most of them thought I was absolutely crazy. My husband, Mike was totally supportive and
told everyone he was keeping his feet firmly planted on the ground and had already called our insurance agent… so no
worries (always the jokester).
Everyone asked if I was scared or nervous, and truthfully, I wasn’t. I met with my instructor, Greg who is a very
handsome Aruban, so it definitely made it easier to take. His words of wisdom “This is the most fun you will have
strapped to a guy fully clothed” … and it was. The plane is extremely small, and you sit on the floor so you can scrunch
over to the door when you have to jump. When we reached 10,000 feet Greg opened the door and strapped to this very
able instructor, I made my first jump. The first part of the jump is a freefall and it wasn’t my favorite part, but when
the parachute opens, and you are floating down it is totally exhilarating. I could see Aruba from above, all the places I
spend time at and the beautiful sky and sea. I have many pictures and a video which I have watched several times, and
it is exciting every time I see it. I loved every moment of it and am so happy I finally went skydiving.
So, if you have something on your Bucket List, as they say… Just Do It.

Editor’s Note:
Pat has been a valued part of Metedeconk Moments from its ‘GET GO’. Me, as well as my entire staff, are so proud

of her marvelous accomplishments, and her continued battle of survival through Cancer. She continues to amaze us, not
only with her delicious recipes, but with her courage and determination. Working with Pat, for the past 16+ years, has
been extremely inspiring, and I am, personally, glad to call her my friend….

HATE!!! ads-1551

Without a doubt, "hate" has become one of the April 2020 Metedeconk Moments 23
strongest, if not THE strongest, of emotions exhibited
by we humans. "Love" has its place but, lately, hate has
leaped to the top of the pile. If you are not convinced of
that fact, just turn on any television news program and
watch the headline events of the day. You will, no doubt,
see news footage of riots, beatings, shootings, screaming....
the majority of which, lately, regard differing of political
opinions within our country.

What has happened to us as a nation?, What has
happened to our belief in the right of all of our citizens to
think and to speak, to vocalize their thoughts without the
fear of harm or retribution? There is no "commandment" in
The Constitution, nor in our state and local laws, that says
"Thou shall not speaketh thy beliefs". No, citizens cannot
legally plan, and physically carry out the destruction of our
society! They can, however, legally vocalize their beliefs
and hatreds in our nation, in its leadership, and carry out
their hatred though the voting process. Those who vote
in agreement with them may very well win their case.
And, then again, they may not, for there is always another
group of thoughts to contend with. That is the beauty of
our country.

Of late, it has become commonplace for citizens of one
political perspective to be physically attacked by citizens of
another. The attackers should carefully read our country's
Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the many historical
works that have been written regarding such actions. They
should take the time to study the issues, seek remedies for
those issues they disagree with, and use the voting process
in order to get their points across. Otherwise, anarchy
will pursue. Who I vote for, and what my political beliefs
are, remain my business. My country's Constitution is my
guide in this matter, and I have a deep belief in it. Does that
make me a better citizen than those who would scoff at The
Constitution, and deny its purpose and meaning? Nope!!!
I'm just a loyal citizen living, freely, under its umbrella,
and fully appreciating it. Amen!!

BY HELEN KLEINBAUM

Lately, I’ve been reading many books that are wonderful but depressing the H out of me. They’ve been about death,
the Holocaust, human trafficking and other very heavy serious topics. During the reading process I am deeply disturbed
and upset. I carry a heavy burden of relating to the characters as if they are in my present life. I ache for them, and I am
depressed for quite some time. Even after finishing the book I am haunted by the stories of suffering and hopelessness.

So, I have decided it’s time for me to begin to write a book. The genre will be humorous, and happily lighthearted.
Haven’t yet decided if it will be fiction or nonfiction. Knowing me though I will have to put some of myself, my friends
and family in it somehow. I will change the names to protect the guilty. Of course, I’ll never admit to who or what is
true and what is just my exaggerated story telling. You can call it my writer’s license.

I’ve already got my title, and a couple of chapter headings, even though I’m quite sketchy on what the book is going
to be about. My title ...... drum roll please.... is: Swinging from The Chandelier. I know, it’s awesome, in my very humble
opinion, it speaks volumes to my creative genius.

Swinging from the Chandelier has so many possible meanings. It could be about my life and all its sexual escapades.
Could you just imagine the scintillating chapters that could be written in either first person narrative, or just from the
perspective of one of my many lovers.

Only one small tiny little problem, Harvey is my first and only lover, so that book would probably be a page long if
I double spaced. It could be about the many roles, and jobs I’ve had in my life, and juggling them all so acrobatically
while swinging so effortlessly from the chandelier could be a tale of inspiration to all.

Being a wife, mother, teacher, mentor, supervisor, administrator, caregiver, financier, friend, sister and overall master
in every endeavor I’ve tried with great success would truly be a page turner for most. But alas I would be writing the
story about most of my fellow women who do it all and more daily. We do, we do, and then do some more. In the words
of Aretha and Annie Lennox “Sisters are doing it for themselves. Standing on their own two feet, and ringing on their
own bells” I could write about the True, Real, Honest, No BS Jersey Housewife.

How I have a real husband. How I have a real face with some wrinkles, my natural God given small lips, and my
boobs are mine as well. How my typical days revolve around laundry, straightening up, running errands, food shopping,
cooking sometimes, mahjong, canasta, going out with friends and being on GaGa 24hr call. How my friends make my
life fun and interesting and meaningful because I try to surround myself with the best of the best.

True girlfriends, and guy friends who are honest and good people. When we get together there is this relaxed,
comfortable environment filled with laughter, and mutual respect. For a couple of hours, in each other’s presence, we
are rich beyond any fortune to truly enjoy each other as we leave our worries and complaints at home.

Our swinging chandelier is just enjoying the treasures of good friends. As I begin to contemplate what my great
American novel will be about, the chapter titles overflow. Some of my chapter titles for my book are in no order: ‘Once is
never enough’, ‘Chocolate to thee I sing’, ‘The assassination attempt, or ‘How I cooked Shrimp Jambalaya with Kosher
thick Malaga Wine’, ’Does this come in any other color than black’, ‘Do you practice being an Ass, or does it come
naturally’. ‘If I had to do it all over again...I’d do it the same’, ‘In my next life I’m coming back as a ...’.

I think that’s all I can share at this time as I’m retiring to my office to begin my great novel. Chapter One; It began
as any other ordinary day, except it really didn’t. I was ....

"I have one question for you: paper or plastic?"
- Nicholas Cage

That line is spoken by Nicholas Cage in the movie "The Rock". [see: https://tinyurl.com/rgmwamt then scroll up to
entry #1563] For us here in NJ, the question may be moot. The NJ state Senate on 3/5 voted 22-14 on a bill that would
ban single-use bags (both plastic and paper) and Styrofoam, or polystyrene foam, takeout containers in the Garden State.
[see: https://tinyurl.com/wsvu8zb you don't have to disable your ad blocker!] If the current bill becomes law, New Jersey
will become the first state to ban both plastic and paper bags. For me that's a scary concept. I was expecting stores to
go back to paper once single-use plastic bags were not an option. Not to worry, the state Assembly has to pass its own
version of the bill and the governor has to sign it – and even then, it won't go into effect immediately. New York state's
ban on plastic bags went into effect earlier this year. [see: https://tinyurl.com/sw8vx83] but bans only plastic. It does,
however, allow stores a 5 cent/bag charge for paper bags as an incentive for consumers to reuse their own paper bags
or convert to reusable cloth bags.

Paper bags have been manufactured since 1852. The square bottom bag with pleated sides for easier folding that
we are all familiar with since 1883. Plastic bags were introduced in the 1970's. [see: https://tinyurl.com/sltcqnj] Here
we are 150 years later and we're trying to get rid of both at the same time? What's changed? For a long time, paper bags
were considered a better alternative for the environment. However, if you consider their whole life cycle you will find
a different story. [see: https://tinyurl.com/rbt8rpv] Making a paper bag: emits 51% more greenhouse gasses, creates 50
times more water pollution, uses 4 times more raw materials, and consumes 2 times more energy. It's no surprise that
plastic bags are cheaper. If that isn't bad enough, you already know that paper bags tear easily and disintegrate when wet
so they don't get re-used as much as you'd think. They are heavier than their plastic counterparts. If they are recycled,
trucking them to a recycler creates more greenhouse pollution. The real bad news is that if they wind up in a landfill they
often do not biodegrade for decades, or perhaps hundreds of years, because of a lack of oxygen. Considering all of that
it's not surprising that NJ (and other states) are considering banning paper bags along with plastic ones!

To date, the progress of legislative bans on single use bags (either paper, plastic, or both) has been spotty at best.
Several states have enacted statewide bans [see: https://tinyurl.com/qm9xfac and https://tinyurl.com/sq36prb] while in
several more the bans have been enacted, without consistency, at the town or county level [ibid.] You can be sure that a
ban of one type, or another, is coming sooner than later. Kroger, America's largest supermarket chain (and second-largest
grocer, behind Walmart) has vowed to eliminate plastic bags by 2025. [see: https://tinyurl.com/qmw5znw] Walmart has
begun selling 98 cent reusable bags at its checkout carousels to “increase customer convenience.” The bags are made out
of recycled plastic. [see: https://tinyurl.com/ucbhmq8] At the LIDL store that just opened locally in Howell you either
bring your own bag or pay them 7 cents for a paper one! [see: https://tinyurl.com/qrw9jgt]

Social Committee’s

VALENTINE’S DAY PARTY

BY TERRY HACKMEYER

The Social Committee hosted their annual Valentine’s Day Party on Saturday, February 15, 2020. The ballroom

was decorated in red and pink, giving it a romantic setting. Thanks to our Decorator-in-Chief, Rosanne Alper and her

committee helpers. Lou Abbato, the evening’s entertainer, singer, and DJ were great, and kept the mostly red-attired

guests ready to dance the night away. The newly carpeted and enlarged dance floor was filled throughout the evening

with couples who enjoyed the romantic music.

Dinner was served to each table, family style. The menu consisted of salad, Beef Stroganoff with noodles, Chicken

Piccata, and Assorted Vegetables. We were treated, during the evening, to a terrific tango performed by Jean and Jose

Garcia. They captivated the audience with their dramatic dance routine. Afterwards, the committee presented them with

a dancing couple trophy, along with our thanks to a very talented couple.

A 100% give-back raffle was held, and the winners were:

1st prize of $210 to Joyce DeSiena

2nd prize or $150 to Helen Stein

3rd prize of $75 to Addie Capaldo.

In addition, a bottle of wine was won by Karen Arena.

Congrats to all. Dessert was served on the veranda. Strawberry short cake and chocolates were on the menu.

Thanks to a most ambitious committee for the lovely evening. Committee members are Annmarie Marotta, Carole

O’Brien, Jeri Ackerman, Joyce DeSienna, Karen Arena, Rosanne Alper, Terry Hackmeyer and, of course Eileen

Rosenbaum, committee chairperson.

BY RUTH PASHKIN

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett

As you may guess from the title, this book is about a big house and the family that lives in it.
Toward the end of World War II, real estate developer and landlord Cyril Conroy surprises
his wife, Elna, with the keys to a mansion in the Elkins Park neighborhood of Philadelphia. Elna,
who had no idea how much money her husband had amassed and still thought they were poor,
is appalled by the luxurious property, which comes fully furnished and complete with imposing
portraits of its former owners (Dutch people named VanHoebeek) as well as a servant girl named
Fluffy. When her son, Danny, is 3 and daughter, Maeve, is 10, Elna's antipathy for the place sends
her on the lam—first occasionally, then permanently. This leaves the children with the household
help and their rigid, chilly father, but the difficulties of the first year pale when a stepmother and
stepsisters appear on the scene. I leave the rest to your imagination.
Patchett is a master storyteller. Like the many-windowed mansion at its center, this richly
furnished novel gives brilliantly clear views into the lives it contains. Characters and lives change,
only the house doesn’t change. You believe you could drive to Elkins Park and the house will be there.
