Longwood Freestanding Emergency Department (FSED) Rendering Suree and Dr. Zabunnissa “Zaby” Vyas, via their foundation, have made a generous gift in memory of Richard Shaffer, DO, as a tribute to his lifelong dedication to healthcare excellence. inspire - Summer 2024 6 Elevating Trauma Care: Orlando Health’s Transformative Expansion Thanks to donors from across our region, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center’s (ORMC) Emergency Department and Level One Trauma Center have undergone significant renovations. While the Emergency Department renovations are well underway, the Trauma Center is already operating at full capacity, thanks to the completion of its upgrades. This transformative expansion enhances Orlando Health ORMC’s critical care capabilities, with the Trauma Center now boasting top-of-the-line technology and redesigned facilities to meet the growing healthcare needs of Central Florida. Fortifying the Future: Significance of Healthcare Infrastructure With an increased volume of patients, nearly 7,200 trauma cases each year, and more complex cases coming through the door regularly, Orlando Health ORMC is equipped with the tools and space needed for caregivers to treat patients today and well into the future. With these investments, teams can care for the most severe and traumatic injuries in the completed Trauma Center, from falls to strokes to an unforeseen mass intake event. Orlando Health ORMC stands ready and waiting to treat the most life-threatening injuries and help patients return to their families and communities. That is why the importance of a Level One Trauma Center cannot be overstated. An essential part of the team’s mission is to provide the highest level of surgical care, conduct research to advance critical care treatments and provide education and outreach to help prevent injuries. Staffed with specialized teams ready to respond to any emergency 24/7, it is an indispensable resource in times of crisis. On a scale of 1 to 10, this facility and staff rate a 10. The care I received prompted my decision to donate through my IRA account to support your mission of helping the lives you touch. — Pete Jones, Grateful Patient

Community Support Fuels Cardiology Advancements As part of Orlando Health’s efforts to continually enhance cardiac care at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, the Orlando Health Foundation has allocated $1 million to upgrade the equipment and software that powers physicians’ life-saving cardiac procedures. This substantial investment of funds raised by community donors underscores their unwavering commitment to embracing the newest healthcare technologies. The funds will have a tangible and immediate impact on patient care. In the most recent year-over-year comparison, the WatchmanTM and MitraClipTM — two cardiac interventions named for the devices implanted during their respective procedures — have seen significant increases at Orlando Health. First, the organization will secure 11 top-of-the-line ultrasound systems and upgrade two currently in rotation, for a total of 13. Then, equipped with advanced hardware such as True Vue Glass and TEE Probes, Dynamic HeartModelA.I. software will allow cardiac experts to achieve increased levels of detail in their imaging techniques. With these additional equipment enhancements, echocardiography (a pivotal part of cardiac diagnostics and surgery) will provide new 3-dimensional images of the heart and the structures surrounding it as opposed to most hospitals’ 2-dimensional models. WATCHMAN™ 102% Increase A small, parachute-shaped device roughly the size of a quarter that prevents blood clots from forming in the left atrial appendage MitraClip™ 70% Increase A small, implanted clip attached to the heart’s mitral valve to help it close more completely, restoring normal blood flow TEE Probes To obtain data on the heart's structure, these take detailed pictures of the heart and the arteries that lead to and from it True Vue Glass Displays 3D structures of the heart more effectively, leading to increased diagnostic and surgical opportunities Dynamic HeartModelA.I. Tracks every frame of the cardiac cycle, providing measurements that increase diagnostic confidence To learn more about supporting cardiac care at Orlando Health, please contact Daniel Barr at (321) 841-8618 or [email protected]. With these advancements, Orlando Health can help meet the demands of our region’s high-acuity patient population. Patients will receive faster, more efficient care with elevated knowledge and precision — leading to decreased time under anesthesia, higher precision, reduction in potential complications and shorter recovery times. 7 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com

Lucille is just one of the many faithful participants in National Doctors’ Day. When Lucille and her late husband, Floyd, moved to Orlando in 1990, the first thing Lucille said was, “We need to find a doctor!” Lucille has received more than 30 years of healthcare from Orlando Health. With several family members who are physicians, Lucille finds National Doctors’ Day to be an important day to celebrate and honor the care physicians provide for their patients. inspire - Summer 2024 8

When Akosua was 20 weeks pregnant, she learned her daughter Celeste would be born with the most severe type of spina bifida. That’s when she turned to Orlando Health, becoming the first patient of the fetal surgery program. At 25 weeks pregnant, Akosua and baby Celeste underwent in-utero surgery to repair the defect in her spine. She goes to physical therapy weekly and every six months she sees her specialists at the Spina Bifida Clinic at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer including neurosurgery, urology, orthopedics and gastroenterology. Celeste is now a talkative and active 5 year old. She walks on her own and enjoys gymnastics, swimming and playing with her sister – things that may not have been possible without fetal surgery. At only 7 years old, John Parker was severely injured while at home playing “spy games” with friends on the upstairs balcony. His shirt caught on the spike of the iron fence and pulled him down, impaling him in the neck. Immediately, the first responders knew he needed the Level One Trauma Center at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer. This began his journey to healing. During treatment and follow-up care, he developed a love for the hospital and its caregivers. He continues to engage in ways he can personally give back to the hospital. Today, John Parker is extremely active and plays baseball and golf. John Parker Age 14

Creating a Legacy: Rose Mary Ogram Imagine a woman of unwavering independence, a globetrotter with a passion for numbers, a cultivator of profound friendships, and a perpetual seeker of knowledge, even in her eighties. This is the essence of Ms. Rose Mary Ogram, a remarkable individual. Rose Mary, with an accent reminiscent of Scarlet O’Hara, was not just a high school math teacher and tutor but a dedicated educator who left a profound impact on her students. An astute investor, her intelligence and prudence allowed her to leave a philanthropic legacy upon her passing. After growing up in Tallahassee and attending Florida State University, she spent time living abroad in Belgium alongside her parents. When her mom’s health began to fail, Rose Mary returned to Orlando with her family and eventually became the main caregiver for her aging parents. Throughout their lives in Central Florida, the family received much of their medical care at Orlando Health, within walking distance of their family’s home. The care provided to Rose Mary and her family made a lasting impact. Provide Hope for the Future Rose Mary’s belief in giving her best, regardless of the circumstances, was a principle she imparted to her extended family and students. This principle also guided her in her estate planning. In addition to providing for her family and endowing a scholarship fund, she chose to enhance the future of healthcare by allocating a portion of her estate to Orlando Health. Through Rose Mary’s generous planned gift, an endowment fund was named in her memory to ensure future generations will remember and celebrate her generosity. The impact of her giving will help elevate the care that Orlando Health will deliver to patients in our community for years to come. 13 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com
