Orlando Health Foundation - Spring 2023 Inspire

Spring 2023 inspire Cover Photo: JP Lugo, our 2023 CMN Hospitals Champion for Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children

inspire - Spring 2023 2 Dear Friends, Ten years ago, Orlando Health stepped up their commitment by making critical changes centered on quality and safety. An award-wining healthcare system with six hospitals at the time, we saw the most deliveries and the most trauma alerts in the region. That high volume equaled unmatched opportunities to gain experience. However, we asked ourselves, “Does this level of practice truly reflect excellence?” Ten years ago, the answer was no. In the past decade, Orlando Health has put the entire patient experience – encompassing quality, safety and outcomes – at the forefront of everything we do. The system has also grown significantly, and it became time to not only compare Orlando Health to its year-overyear performance, but to the best of the best hospitals in the world. Orlando Health can confidently say it is now the best in preventing hospital acquired infections. Through comparisons with publicly reported CMS1 data, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Orlando Health Dr. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies outperformed every major hospital in Florida as well as all 20 additional hospitals on the U.S. News & World Report’s Honor Roll2 . Bayfront Health St. Petersburg outperformed this same group in preventing central line bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and every single Orlando Health hospital outperformed the national benchmark for clostridium difficile (C. diff) prevention. Through the dedication of team members throughout the system, our delivery of patient care has exceeded even our own expectations. Thank you for being on this journey with us. Your contributions to champion healthcare in Central Florida make a difference in the lives of your friends, family and neighbors. Gratefully, John W. Bozard, President Orlando Health Foundation Bayfront Health St. Petersburg Foundation 1 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data includes hospital-specific charges for more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals that receive Medicare and Medicaid payments. 2 U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll recognizes 20 of the nation’s highest performing hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions; over 5,000 hospitals are evaluated each year. 3 The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital rating focused exclusively on hospital safety. 4 Becker’s is a medical industry trade magazine that does its own research, supplementing with government-released data and the U.S. News & World Report rankings. inspire - Fall 2022 4 Jared and Julie Wolovnick Pledge $1 Million to Support Pediatric Healthcare As Champions Circle members for both our pediatric and adult facilities, Julie and Jared share a deep value of supporting the healthcare needs of those in our community. In addition to their financial support, the Wolovnicks host an annual private golf tournament, affectionately known as the Wolovnick Cup. Through this event, Julie and Jared introduce friends and family to the mission of Orlando Health. The weekend includes multiple days of golf at some of the best Central Florida golf courses, including Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge. In total, they have raised approximately $300,000 from this tournament alone for Orlando Health Arnold Palmer. The event in 2022 raised over $115,000. “Julie and I are proud to support Orlando Health because it combines quality healthcare with a caring heart. Having visited the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit several times and having used many of the different departments within the hospital for our own family health issues, we can say without reservation that Orlando Health is the best hospital system for anyone looking for the best in healthcare,” says Jared. Julie and Jared have each held a life-long value of giving back and understand the impact philanthropy has in the lives of others. Through their involvement with Orlando Health, the Wolovnicks have had a substantial impact on our success and ability to provide high-level healthcare in Central Florida. The Wolovnicks began sharing their generosity with Orlando Health in 2011, and since then have given to our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies, The Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families, part of Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and our adult hospitals. Jared also serves on our Orlando Health Children’s Philanthropy Council. Longtime supporters of Orlando Health, Julie and Jared Wolovnick furthered their generous support of our mission with a recent pledge of $1 million to support Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

5 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com At Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, two operating rooms were prepared for the highly complex procedures. With no room for error, maternal-fetal medicine physicians injected the unborn baby with an anesthetic, then threaded a needle, under direct ultrasound guidance, through mom’s abdominal wall and into the uterus. From there, the needle was advanced through the fetal chest wall and into the sac surrounding the heart to remove the fluid and allow expansion of the lungs – all while the heart was still beating. Following the procedure, doctors performed a C-section on Randyiah, and baby girl Zuri was born at 29 weeks’ gestation, weighing just 3 lbs. 8 oz. Upon delivery, she was stabilized by the awaiting neonatology team and immediately rushed to the adjacent operating room where another team of specialists removed the tumor. There were at least seven specialties represented in the planning of mom and daughter’s care, and a team of 11 physicians and surgeons between two operating rooms on the day of surgery. Each specialty played a critical role in Zuri’s care and survival. Zuri moved into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer to recover from surgery and gain the strength needed to go home. Her family and medical team have been thrilled with the outcome of the surgery, as the tumor was removed in its entirety and is not expected to return. Sixteen weeks later, at more than 10 lbs, Zuri was released from the NICU to be united with her mother, father and older sister. Randiyah says, “Although it was a hard journey, we just took it day by day. We didn’t want to rush bringing Zuri home. We knew she would be ready in her own time.” Zuri is ready to be the incredible little sister she was meant to be, and only requires surveillance moving forward as the care team anticipates she will be able to live a happy and normal life. Bringing Baby Zuri Home Randyiah came to Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies after learning that her unborn daughter, Zuri, was afflicted with a rare and rapidly growing tumor on her heart. Without surgical intervention, her baby would not survive. Orlando Health clinicians urgently came together to perform back-to-back surgeries on mother and baby.

inspire - Fall 2022 6 Honoring Family: the Andrew P. Caneza Foundation The Caneza family is a name synonymous with generosity, involvement, and community service. They have been actively involved in improving education and healthcare initiatives in the Orlando community for over 40 years. The family and their foundation have generously supported Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, The Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families and the Level One Trauma Center at Orlando Healath Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). Tell us about your family’s background, and the Andrew P. Caneza Foundation? Our family is originally from New Orleans, Lousiana, but we have called Orlando home since moving the family business here in 1981. We have always been a close-knit family of six children. Our parents had little growing up and instilled the value of hard work. As the family grew, our parents worked endless hours to give us a better life. We learned at an early age to respect and dedicate ourselves to family. Our family has a strong belief that all glory to God for the many blessings he has bestowed upon us. It was very important to our parents that we keep the family close and always give back to those in need. We have a large family of more than fifty members, spanning three generations, now living in the Orlando area. Our mother passed away years ago and dad passed away in 2020 at the age of ninety-five. However, they will always be remembered for their continuous generosity throughout their lives. How did you first encounter Orlando Health? Our brother, Wayne, was critically injured years ago in an accident and was brought to Orlando Health ORMC. He passed away a few days later, after life support was removed. It was one of the saddest days of our lives. Our family was devastated. The staff and all those who cared for him were very kind, compassionate and provided great care for Wayne and our family. We often think about all the families who have experienced

tragedy. It is our hope that we can contribute to new technology and advancements in medical care for patients and families at Orlando Health. We are very pleased to honor our brother. He was an incredible person who we miss dearly. What advice would you give others that wish to give back to their community? We feel giving back and focusing on others is one of the most important things we all can do. Every bit of help gives hope to others. The amount of your gift of time or money is never insignificant, no matter how small or large. Do what is in your heart as you ponder how you can give back. If there is one thing you would want for people reading this to know about the hospital, what would it be? Our family experienced great care at the passing of our brother. Since then, family members have faced open heart surgery, emergency gall bladder surgery, cancer treatment, etc., and the quality of care has never faltered. *Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is a designated Level One Trauma Center and cares for pediatric and adult patients at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Orlando Health ORMC. At Orlando Health ORMC, a new Trauma Black Box system will continuously acquire audiovisual, anonymous patient physiological and environmental data from a system of wall-mounted cameras, microphones and sensors. AI algorithms then populate a data timeline of case events from start to finish. The data helps to explore relationships between initial trauma resuscitation and downstream patient-oriented outcomes. Thank You! The $185,000 gift provided by the Andrew P. Caneza Foundation will bring a new level of technological advancement to trauma care* in our region. inspire - Spring 2023 8 Meet JP Lugo, our 2023 CMN Hospitals Champion for Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. When JP was born, he could barely move, constantly slept and was not eating regularly. It wasn’t until nine months old that he was able to hold his head up on his own. Following several tests at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer, JP was referred to specialists at The Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families, part of Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, who recommended occupational and physical therapies. Just before his second birthday, JP underwent testing and was diagnosed with Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS), a rare genetic condition that caused many of the complications JP experienced, including developmental delays, feeding and speech difficulties, and low muscle tone. Throughout his childhood, JP continued to receive care from specialists that helped both him and his family navigate his medical needs. From regular checkups with his cardiologist and neurologist; to appointments with his gastroenterologist to help with nutritional necessities, and visits at the Feeding Difficulties Center, JP’s family was determined to do everything they could to help him continue to grow stronger. Thanks to the early intervention JP received at The Howard Phillips Center, and the continued care from his team at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer, JP can walk, run and dance with his seven siblings and continues to surpass all expectations. JP is an avid sports fan and an athlete himself. In fact, he is currently one of the top swimmers for the Special Olympics Central Florida team! Wherever he goes, JP’s infectious smile brings joy to everyone he meets. Still today, the team at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer remains an important part of JP’s life and continues to be by his side to help him be the strongest version of himself. Every year, 170 member Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) hospitals identify a “Champion” in each of their local communities to serve as the face for children treated at their local children’s hospital. inspire - Spring 2023 14 Community Driven Events On February 4, the Graham J. Cowan Foundation hosted the second annual Run for the Cherubs 5K & Walk, benefiting Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. The Cowan family began this event as a way to honor their son, Graham, who was stillborn. This year’s event raised over $9,000, bringing the Foundation’s total giving to over $15,000 for Orlando Health Winnie Palmer. “Since 2016, we have done many things to honor Graham’s memory. One of our goals was to host an annual 5K, benefitting Orlando Health Winnie Palmer. We will always protect Graham’s memory and will continue sharing our story with other families trying to find their way back.” – Karen Cowan Sixty players gathered at the Country Club of Orlando on Friday, October 21, 2022 for a sanctioned duplicate bridge tournament, raising over $10,000 for the Orlando Health Cancer Institute. Since I enjoy playing bridge, this seemed a natural fit. The tribute flags we sold honor those who have battled and won or whom we wish to remember. They honor those who have fought all sorts of cancers, not just breast cancer. 17 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com Ginny, Stroke Survivor: Why Timing Means Everything After enjoying a midday lunch at home with her husband, Frank, Ginny got up from her kitchen table and knocked over her glass of water. Surprised at the occurrence, she realized she had no control over her right arm. Frank immediately called 911, recognizing she had all the signs of a stroke. When the paramedics arrived, they confirmed Ginny was having a massive stroke, and airlifted her to Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) where she received emergency surgery to remove the blockage. In the United States, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds1 . Timing is everything when it comes to a stroke and can mean the difference between life and death, and for survivors, the degree of recovery. For Central Florida residents, Orlando Health ORMC, which is recognized as a state-designated Comprehensive Stroke Center, stands ready to treat both simple and complex cerebral vascular disorders. While Ginny doesn’t remember being transported to the hospital, she remembers her experience once she awoke there. “Everyone at the hospital was absolutely wonderful. I could not have asked for better help. So many people came into my room, who weren’t even treating me at the moment, just wanting to see if I was okay. I am very thankful for the team at Orlando Health ORMC,” recalls Ginny. On day three of her hospital stay, Ginny and Frank celebrated their 51st anniversary with a slice of cake from the cafeteria. For Ginny, the thought of having a stroke never occurred to her. “It was such a shock to me that I had one,” she says, as she lived an active lifestyle and tried to eat healthy. After her surgery, Ginny was recovering so well, she did not need to receive any rehab therapy as many stoke patients do. Frank’s urgent response to call the paramedics may have made all the difference in her recovery. Six days after her surgery, Ginny left the Intensive Care Unit and went home. Six months later, Ginny re-visited Orlando Health ORMC and reunited with her neurosurgeon. “I wanted to express how thankful I was for saving my life. I was almost in tears,” says Ginny. The reunion was filled with fondness for Ginny as she thanked the team that saved her life. Orlando Health uses the acronym B.E. F.A.S.T. to identify patients who have suffered a stroke - the letters standing for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech and Time. Knowing these symptoms of stroke can help protect you and your loved ones. 1 National Stroke Association

inspire - Fall 2022 18 Cardiac Renovations Recently, through a $2 million pledge to the Orlando Health Heart and Vascular Institute, Orlando Health completed renovations to the Orlando Health ORMC floor 7B Cardio-Thoracic Surgical Unit. Renovations will be completed this spring for floor 5B Cardiac Intervention Unit - both of which cater to recovering cardiac patients. Through philanthropy, we now have all new personal restrooms, patient room doors and lighting, along with wood features and antibacterial flooring. These improvements will increase patient privacy, sound control, ambiance and safety. “Many of our patients come prepared for surgery with pajamas, toiletries and other things to make their stay feel like home. However, the setting did not fit patients’ desires for their stay. These updates will help provide the patient experience we want to convey... our patients are family, and we take care of them as such.” - Rebecca Whitman BSN, RN, PCCN, Clinical Assistant Nurse Manager “ ”

19 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com Radiation oncologists usually avoid the heart at all costs, but an emerging therapy performed at Orlando Health, using precise radiation therapy, has successfully given time and quality of life back to heart patients who have few, if any, remaining treatment options. It began when one of our cardiac electrophysiologists and a radiation oncologist, discussing novel curative technologies, realized they had read the same research about an experimental treatment for ventricular tachycardia - a rapid, uncontrolled heart rate triggered by a disruption to the heart’s electrical rhythm, often because of damage or scarring. With a patient in mind who was entering a downward spiral of increasing tachycardia, both physicians believed this could be his only remaining option. Meet Dewey Dewey Caldwell’s heart condition had deteriorated to a point that left him bedridden. He suffered more than two dozen heart attacks and, as his heart sustained more damage, there were fewer options to treat him. With each episode, he got weaker, and medications and procedures were no longer enough. Dewey and his wife were planning to discontinue treatment when physicians approached them with a radical new option. Radiation technology can now pinpoint treatment within a millimeter, avoiding sending x-rays through important organs and other tissues. The treatment uses stereotactic body radiation therapy, but instead of avoiding healthy tissue, it focuses a high dose of radiation to the exact spot that is disrupting the heart’s rhythm to basically change the way the heart functions and stop the arrhythmia. To prepare for the treatment, there is extensive planning and testing to translate cardiac heart mapping technology to work with radiation software and equipment. The heart’s electrical circuits are mapped from all different angles, and then those maps are put together and incorporated into CT scans our radiation oncology team uses to identify exactly where the therapy should be targeted. After months of planning, Dewey received the radiation therapy, which took a total of 30 minutes. In the weeks that followed, Dewey’s energy dramatically increased, and his previously connected defibrillator was deployed far less often. “I got on a plane and went to my 60th high school reunion, which is something I never thought I’d be able to do,” Dewey said. “My doctors never gave up on me and found a treatment that never even existed but has made all the difference for me.” While the treatment is still reserved for compassionate use and requires additional research to examine the long-term effects, experts are hopeful that it can help give patients more time and a better quality of life. A Budding Treatment for Heart Disease: Radiation Therapy

inspire - Spring 2023 20 The team at the St. Cloud facility is led by Simi George, MD, a board-certified medical oncologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of all cancer types with special expertise in gastrointestinal cancers. “At the Orlando Health Cancer Institute in St. Cloud, you get the benefit of the entire hospital system,” said Dr. Simi George. “You get access to state-of-the-art surgery, access to clinical trials – all the things you would get at a big cancer center - with the bulk of the treatment being delivered close to home.” Cancer patients experience multiple types of treatments, often on a weekly or daily basis. Regional cancer treatment facilities enhance patients’ care and reduce their stress levels by removing the need to travel outside their county to receive treatment. The facility holds ten semi-private infusion bays for patients who need chemotherapy, immunotherapy or IV therapy. Two private infusion bays and an on-site pharmacy are set to open in Summer 2023. 25 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com Breast Cancer Education Sessions Empower Individuals to Take Control of Health Since 1983, Orlando Health has been providing exceptional and compassionate cancer care in Central Florida, focusing on patients identified as high risk for breast and other cancers because of personal history, family history or genetic testing. Each year, the Orlando Health Cancer Institute cares for 1,000 new breast cancer patients from Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Lake Counties. When patients enter our facilities, they are often misinformed or unaware about the counseling and testing process for cancer. This may affect their health status and decisionmaking on whether to follow-through on a referral. Knowing this, more education surrounding breast cancer awareness and genetic testing is necessary to improve the health of our community members. Thanks to a grant of $10,000 from the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation, the Orlando Health Cancer Institute was able to fund genetic testing education for underserved populations in Central Florida. This grant allows the Cancer Institute to educate the community about breast cancer prevention and treatment, increase awareness and to reduce stigma related to genetic testing. Through the collaboration with Sisters Network Orlando Chapter – a breast cancer survivorship organization and community referral network that promotes breast health awareness through early detection, education and support services – the Orlando Health Cancer Institute began hosting in-person and virtual educational sessions. Through these sessions, our experts educated our community about the risk factors, screening options and self-advocacy tools available for them to take control of their breast health. From July to November 2022, the Orlando Health Breast Cancer and Genetics education events provided education to men and women on their risk factors as it relates to cancer and when to seek medical treatment. Over 300 community members have already participated in these events. With more education events planned for 2023, this grant will not only allow the Orlando Health Cancer Institute to continue to positively impact our local communities, but also empower individuals to become proactive advocates for their own health.
