Orlando Health Facility Updates

ORLANDO HEALTH HORIZON WEST HOSPITAL WELCOM

Orlando Health Horizon West opened its
doors on January 30, 2021. The beautiful
six-story, 214,000-square-foot facility
opened with 30 patient beds, with room
to expand to a 120-bed capacity. The new
facility seamlessly integrates the adjacent
78,000-square-foot emergency department
and medical pavilion that began serving
the West Orange County community in
2018.
In the hospital, patients have access to
multiple specialists, including top physicians in cardiovascular care,
emergency care and minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Primary
care and outpatient specialty services are provided in the adjacent
medical pavilion. The benefit of this is that patients can see their care
providers, get imaging, laboratory or diagnostic tests, and receive the
latest treatments on one campus.

DR. GILBERT AND JOYCE WALKER’S In 1960, Dr. Gilbert and Joyce Walker moved from
Miami to Winter Park, Florida in search of a new
LONG LEGACY location to practice pediatric medicine. At the time,
Winter Park’s population was barely over 17,000. The
AT ORLANDO HEALTH Walkers, who recently celebrated their 70th wedding
anniversary, remember the warm and friendly
atmosphere of the city and their neighbors during
that time. They still live in Winter Park, with their
extended families nearby.
In the 1960s, the region was growing rapidly and
the addition of Dr. Walker to the Central Florida
community increased the number of pediatricians
in the entire three county area (Orange, Seminole,
Osceola) to nine, while six of those pediatricians
spent the majority of their practice time in downtown
Orlando. Now, at 92 years old, Dr. Gilbert Walker
is the only living pediatrician of those original six
doctors.
As Joyce put in long days raising their four children
and serving on various local boards and committees,
Gilbert built a pediatric practice while employed by
what was then known as Orange Memorial Hospital,
now Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical
Center. Dr. Walker served as the Chief of Pediatrics
for two years.
Dr. Walker knew from the age of six he wanted to be a
pediatric physician. “I always loved children. Children
are very, very intelligent, they really are. They needed
shots and so we explained to them what the shot was
going to do, and they didn’t mind. They knew it was
going to keep them from getting a disease. You just
needed to talk to them” he explains.
Throughout Dr.Walker’s career, he helped lead the
charge in providing the best medical care possible.
Under his guidance, Orlando Health instituted its first
pediatric residency program and began participating
in the federal Head Start program. The group of
pediatric physicians and new residents took on a
rotation of providing care throughout the community
– through Head Start, home visits to underserved
communities and more - the focus always remained
on providing the best possible healthcare for all
patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

medicine during his career. Not only was medical

CANNONBALL KIDS’ CANCER FOUNDATION
TO HELP FUND ONCOFERTILITY

AT ORLANDO HEALTH ARNOLD PALMER
HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN

In their second grant cycle of 2019, Cannonball Kids’ cancer Foundation (CKc) awarded $565,000
for four research grants, creating 200 options for children battling cancer through clinical trials,
programs and young investigators. Among those awarded, first announced in January of 2020, was
Amy A. Smith, MD, and Laura Wieber, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, of Orlando Health Arnold Palmer
Hospital for Children, receiving $65,000 for the first and only Florida-based oncofertility clinic for
childhood cancer patients.
Infertility remains a persistent and major concern for childhood cancer survivors. Early intervention
is essential to protecting reproductive health and the cornerstone of successful intervention is a
nurse patient navigator to educate families on their options and make a family-centered, timely plan.
CKc’s funding will help support three main goals:

1 the hiring of such a patient navigator at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer,
2 the creation of a multidisciplinary service team for reproductive preservation,
3 an ovarian tissue cryopreservation opportunity for pre-pubescent females at the hospital.

“We are so grateful to the Cannonball Kids’ cancer
Foundation for this grant. It will help transform futures for
our cancer patients. This effort will make Orlando Health
Arnold Palmer and Central Florida the hosts of the first and
only dedicated pediatric oncofertility program in the state of
Florida.” – Amy A. Smith, MD, Chief, Pediatric Hematology
and Oncology, the Hayley Center for Children’s Cancer and
Blood Disorders, Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for
Children.

Our Oncofertility Program brings together oncology and fertility experts to help preserve the
patient’s ability to have children in the future. The Oncofertility Program is a joint effort between
specialists within Urology, Adolescent Gynecology and the Haley Center for Children’s Cancer and
Blood Disorders.

SAYING “YES” TO TWINS In December 2019, Laura arrived at Orlando Health

VIVIENNE experiencing what she thought were Braxton Hicks
& MARGOT contractions. She was only 22 weeks and four days
pregnant with twin girls. Quickly, she realized she
was in active labor. After roughly 16 hours of praying

wasn’t until two days later when “Baby B,” Margot, was
born via emergency C-section after being in distress.

Vivienne and Margot were born at 22 weeks and five

Watching their tiny newborns, born 17 weeks early,
in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), parents
Laura and Jerod were preparing themselves to lose their
twin babies, not knowing how long they would have
with their girls.

But the team at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer’s NICU
would not give up on them. “I’m so grateful we were at
Orlando Health Winnie Palmer, where instead of giving
us statistics about our babies’ odds, they gave us hope,”
recalls Laura.

Weeks would turn into months as the girls grew bigger
and stronger against all odds. Both girls endured
numerous, highly-complex surgeries under the care of
their beloved NICU team. As they battled infections,
tubes coming in and out, and the struggle to grow from
the one pounds they began as, Vivienne and Margot
continued their fight.
