Your Team PhysicianIra J. Guttentag, MDDr. Ira Guttentag is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute. He specializes in knee and shoulder reconstruction and sports medicine, and his expertise includes knee and ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff repairs, meniscus and cartilage repair and regeneration, total knee replacement, arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery. A leader in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, Dr. Guttentag is skilled in minimally invasive total and partial knee replacement, which allows for a quicker, less painful recovery. Dr. Guttentag believes in finding treatment options that fit each patient’s individual needs. He provides care to athletes of all ages and levels and has served as medical director and head team physician for Tampa Bay’s pro hockey team since 2002. Head Injuries: Signs, Symptoms, ActionIf you or your child has sustained a head injury while playing sports, here is what you need to know and do.Did you know?• Symptoms of a head injury may appear several hours after the injury happens.• Those with a head injury should be observed carefully for 48 hours.• Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen after a head injury unless recommended by your physician.• Never return to the sport or activity on the day the injury occurs.• Contact your family physician or our Sports Medicine department for evaluation before returning to play.Signs or symptomsIf you or your child experience any of the following signs or symptoms after a head injury, seek medical treatment as soon as possible:• Ringing in the ears• Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head• Confusion or feeling “foggy”• Memory problems• Balance problems/dizziness or “seeing stars”• Nausea• Loss of balance or unsteady walking• Sensitivity to light or sound• Irritability or crankiness• Double or fuzzy vision• FatigueDon’t waitThe appearance of certain symptoms indicates a significant head injury that requires IMMEDIATE attention.
