inspire - Spring 2024 4 Thomas and Mary James Make $2 Million Gift, the Largest in Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital History “We are profoundly grateful for the James’ tremendous generosity and unwavering commitment to our organization and community,” said John A. Moore, Senior Vice President of Orlando Health West Region and Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital president. “This remarkable donation will enable us to further provide exceptional healthcare, ultimately enhancing the wellbeing of our patients and the broader community we serve.” Thomas and Mary James

5 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital is thrilled to announce a transformative donation of $2 million from esteemed Tampa-area residents Thomas “Tom” and Mary James. Tom James is the Chairman Emeritus of Raymond James Financial, a prominent diversified financial services company, and a well-known philanthropist in the region. This remarkable act of generosity is the single largest gift to Orlando Health Bayfront to date and will have a profound impact on the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality care and enhance the health and well-being of the community. In 2006, Orlando Health Bayfront established the James Heart Center, following the James’ first gift of $1 million to aid the cost of providing cutting-edge cardiovascular care to Pinellas County and beyond. Tom and Mary’s most recent gift will further the development and growth of the James Heart Center by expediting the addition of a Cardiac Hybrid Operating Suite. Cardiac Hybrid Operating Suite A Cardiac Hybrid Operating Suite combines imageguided interventional technology with a traditional operating room. This allows surgeons operating on complex endovascular procedures to convert to open procedures without delay in the event of potential complications that may arise during surgery. Additionally, the space and technology in the hybrid operating suite lends itself to surgeons from multiple areas of expertise working in tandem, allowing multi-stage procedures to be completed in fewer hospital visits. This is a massive step forward in efficiency and accessibility for patients, as well as a reduction in hospital stays, shorter recovery times and less stress on the body. The James Heart Center The James’ contributions to the Heart Center have launched Orlando Health Bayfront to the forefront of cardiac care in Pinellas County. The James Heart Center: • Offers more cardiac testing and treatment space than any other provider in Pinellas County. • Features a full array of the most current lifesaving procedures, diagnostics and treatments in the Cardiac Cath Lab. • Contains advanced video integration systems, which allow surgeons immediate access to imaging, lab results and other vital information. Orlando Health Bayfront extends its most profound appreciation to Tom and Mary James for their exemplary support and dedication to healthcare in their community. Their donation will have a lasting impact on the organization’s ability to deliver leading-edge medical care and make a positive difference in patients’ lives. inspire - Spring 2024 6 “I truly believe Orlando Health Cancer Institute is the best place to be if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer.” —Janet

After retiring from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Janet relished volunteering with her church, birdwatching, traveling, and cherishing moments with her husband, children and friends. However, 2022 brought a devastating diagnosis of pancreatic cancer following unexplained bouts of pancreatitis. This propelled Orlando Health into an unexpected and yet significant role in Janet’s life. With her newly formed care team beside her and a determined spirit, Janet took on surgery and chemotherapy that stretched her mental and physical toughness beyond anything she’d ever encountered. “My care team provided detailed explanations and visual aids, guiding me through surgery, recovery, and the treatment plan. They offered unwavering support, with someone always just a phone call away for my anxiety, stress, or need to talk,” Janet shared. “My family had the same access. I received remarkable care.” After skilled surgery and an extremely strong chemotherapy regimen, Janet was able to ring the bell – signifying the end of her treatment – with her team right beside her. Throughout her treatment, Janet always felt she was treated as a wife, mom and grandmother rather than just a cancer patient. Today, she is enjoying extended time with her husband, children and grandchildren – getting manicures, shopping and enjoying her granddaughter, Claire’s, basketball games. “There is hope, and that is good,” Janet says as she smiles. More Than a Cancer Patient 7 OrlandoHealthFoundation.com As we look to the future, the Orlando Health Cancer Institute needs your help to expand key programs and technologies. To donate to support innovative treatment options, such as those for pancreatic cancer, please visit Give.OrlandoHealth.com/Cancer.

inspire - Spring 2024 8 Their strength through Bob's battle with pancreatitis reveals a story of triumph and the profound impact of exceptional medical care. Bob, a native of Orlando born at Orange Memorial in 1947, ventured into business at a young age, starting with a glass company and finishing with a flourishing development business. Bob and Ruthie’s dedication to the business was unwavering. Every penny earned was reinvested, paving the way for further growth and expansion. Bob's career later transitioned to public service, where he served as Orange County Commissioner and chairman of the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority while maintaining his business interests. However, Bob's life took a dramatic turn when he developed pancreatitis after being injured in a motorcycle accident. The excruciating pain led him to Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, marking the beginning of a challenging journey. His long battle with pancreatitis demanded extensive medical attention, including an airlift to the Level One Trauma Center at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) at the recommendation of a friend and hospital advocate, Kirsten Carter, MD. He endured multiple surgeries and induced comas, leading to 48 nights in the hospital and a lengthy recovery period. Throughout this tumultuous time, Bob and Ruthie found solace in the exceptional care provided at Orlando Health, most notably by Michael Cheatham, MD. Robert “Bob” and Ruthie Harrell Triumph Through Adversity: A Tale of Perseverance, Hope and Giving Back In a life filled with entrepreneurial successes and a legacy of community service, Robert “Bob” and Ruthie Harrell’s journey took an unexpected turn when faced with a severe health crisis. Orlando Health became a sanctuary where skilled medical professionals not only treated Bob’s condition but also offered unwavering support to the family. Bob likes to hunt and fish, while Ruthie is part of the Pine Castle Women’s Club. Meet Celeste The 2024 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® Champion for Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children During their 20-week ultrasound, Akosua and her husband, Fernando, eagerly awaited news about the gender of their second child. But the technician's expression hinted at a potential issue. The following Monday, they got the news: their baby had spina bifida. Akosua, determined to explore all options, did research, and found that Orlando Health offered surgery for unborn babies with spina bifida. She quickly reached out to the Fetal Care Center at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. Within a week, she had an appointment and started an evaluation to see if she and her baby were candidates for fetal surgery. Thankfully, they were eligible, and at 25 weeks into her pregnancy, Akosua underwent surgery to repair her baby’s spinal defect while she was still in the womb. The surgery went well, and at a little over 32 weeks, baby Celeste was born weighing 4 pounds, 10 ounces. Akosua said, “When she was born, she cried and looked like a healthy baby.” After a short stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to ensure her health, Celeste finally went home. Now, at five years old, she is thriving. She walks on her own, enjoys gymnastics and swimming — things that may not have been possible without fetal surgery. Celeste also enjoys playing with her sister and her favorite characters are Minnie Mouse and Avatars. As Celeste grows, she will continue to receive care at the Spina Bifida Clinic at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer. Celeste goes to physical therapy weekly and every six months she sees her specialists at the Spina Bifida Clinic including neurosurgery, urology, orthopedics and gastroenterology. Celeste is smart, playful, determined and kind. Challenges don’t stop her; she finds her way to overcome them. Every day, she continues to amaze her family. Akosua and her family are grateful for the life-changing surgery and the team at Orlando Health who have and continue to support them throughout this journey. Special thanks to partners of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, whose donations generously helped fund the start of the fetal surgery program and purchase vital equipment including a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine used to detect spina bifida in kids like Celeste. Each year, 170 member Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals identify a “Champion” in each of their local communities to serve as the face for children treated at their local children’s hospital. These ambassadors spend their year advocating for the charitable needs of children’s hospitals across North America. 16 inspire - Spring 2024

In 2016, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) embarked on a transformative journey to address the opioid epidemic plaguing communities across Central Florida. Thanks to grant funding from the Florida Blue Foundation and the Florida Department of Health, the Opioid Navigator Program was born, aiming to provide crucial support for individuals battling Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Fast forward to the present, and the program's success has led to its continued commitment at Orlando Health ORMC and paved the way for expansion to Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital. Orlando Health's Commitment Beyond Treatment Orlando Health's commitment to addressing the opioid crisis goes beyond the Opioid Navigator Program. The organization actively collaborates with legislators to emphasize the importance of mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) in the state of Florida. By advocating for policies that prioritize these critical issues, Orlando Health aims to contribute to systemic change, ultimately reducing the number of people suffering from addiction. The successful expansion of the Opioid Navigator Program highlights the impact of community-driven initiatives in combating opioid addiction. However, this success would not be possible without additional funding commitments. By providing support at critical junctures in a patient's journey, educating healthcare professionals, and building collaborative networks, Orlando Health's Opioid Navigator Program stands as a beacon of hope, collaboration, and commitment to addressing the opioid epidemic. Orlando Health’s Opioid Navigator Program Expands Thanks in Part to Grant Funding Three Key Attributes of the Opioid Navigator Program Assisting Patients in Transition The program plays a crucial role in helping patients transition from inpatient care to specialized OUD treatment facilities. Navigators act as liaisons, ensuring a seamless transfer of care and providing the necessary support for individuals to continue their journey toward recovery. This personalized assistance is invaluable in breaking down barriers to treatment and enhancing the overall continuum of care. Physician Education for Outpatient Treatment Recognizing the importance of comprehensive care, the program extends beyond patients to educate physicians on treating OUD in an outpatient setting. The program aims to bridge the gap between inpatient and outpatient care by providing physicians with the tools and knowledge needed. Building a Collaborative Network The program’s collaborative network of service providers throughout Central Florida is a vital strength. By fostering partnerships with various healthcare institutions, community organizations and treatment centers, the program ensures that individuals can access the resources they need most in their own communities. inspire - Spring 2024 20
