Cardboard Box:

Invention & Evolution

Inspired by: Web revolve

Seems to be simplest of inventions, easily taken for granted how-
ever Cardboard box still pays a very vital role in our everyday
lives for both domestic and industrial use. Cardboard box is re-
ally the jack of all trades and master of most. However easy
to use and move, its evolution was not quite easy and smooth.
Let’s take a peek at invention and evolution of Cardboard boxes.

1840
In France, cardboard boxes were popularized by silk manufacturers transporting Bombyx mori moth eggs from Japan.

1850
As a way to market to the masses, the Kellogg brothers were the first to use cardboard boxes for their cereal products.

1856
The first patent for a cardboard product was used for high hats worn by English gentlemen in 1850’s.

1871
Sir Malcolm Thornhill from England produced the first commercial Cardboard Box. More than 200 years after Chinese invented cardboard
as a means to wrap food.

1879
A factory accident in New York led to 20,000 paper bags being ruined. However Robert Gair realized he could use them to create folding
box templates.

1890
Making the most of the discovery, Gair later invented a machine to produce pre-cut cardboard boxes by using flat pieces that could be
folded together.

1896
US biscuit manufacturer Nabisco began using cardboard boxes for packaging and distributing their products.

1900
By the turn of the century, wooden crates & boxes were being replaced by corrugated paper shipping cartons.

1939
Cardboard boxes were used to protect the gas masks given to every citizen in the UK following the outbreak of World War 2.

1983
An area in London that was home to around 200 homeless people living in cardboard boxes came to be known as ‘Cardboard City’.

2005
Melbourne architect Peter Ryan designed a whole house composed largely of cardboard boxes.

2009
In the UK alone, 7 million tonnes of cardboard for packaging and boxes were produced by the end of 2009.

2014
Most cardboard boxes today are made from re-used material and 70% of the cardboard around the world is recycled.

Packaging 4.0:

Enabling operational excellence

Citation: Protection in Automation, whitepapers

Industry 4.0 and the In-
dustrial Internet of Things
(IIoT) promise to reduce
total cost of ownership
(TCO) by making machin-
ery easier to operate and maintain.
Mass customization requires highly
modular machines to enable auto-
matic adaptation of production to re-
al-time demand.

Integrated condition monitoring
and direct web connectivity down to
the sensor level serves big data an-
alytics and enable auto-diagnostics.
Complemented by augmented reality
technology, access to comprehen-
sive diagnostics via standard web

improved production with zero de-
fects, zero breakdowns and zero ac-

6 IPMMI - Vol. 17, Issue No. 4, January - March 2019

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)

As a key performance indicator (KPI), overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) provides reliable
information regarding the actual production efficiency of a packaging line. It breaks the performance of a
manufacturing unit into three measurable components: availability, performance and quality.

Interoperability standards Calculate and improve OEE on the machine and line level by more easily identifying the root
Easy options management causes of production inefficiency.

Integrated safety Modular nature of software technologies should allow changes to the configuration easily and
software at runtime, further accelerating changeover and boosts productivity. Automated
data production collection and provide OEE functionality without any programming.

Integrated safety is a top priority for Industry 4.0. Safety strategies will be designed for open,
collaborative subsystems belonging to different manufacturers and operators. Use of open and
integrated safety technology will significantly increase line availability and reduce stoppages.

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

The total cost of ownership (TCO) for a piece of equipment or other asset involves much more than simply its
initial cost. The TCO accounts for all the costs over the asset’s entire lifecycle - from installation and deployment
to operation and energy consumption to maintenance and upgrades.

Although implementation of Industry 4.0 does require short-term investment, in return it generates long-
term savings through increased efficiency and optimized energy consumption. TCO analysis sheds light on very
large differences between purchase price and total lifecycle costs - especially in the case of packaging lines, which typically have
very long service life.

Flexibility in production A new generation of service-friendly intelligent transport technology combines optimized
Mass customization productivity and flexibility with industrial-grade reliability to ensure maximum uptime and
mini-mum maintenance. With independent control of multiple movers, such highly dynamic
conveyor systems increase the production rate of packaging lines and make format changes
faster and easier than ever.

Industry 4.0 promises high levels of product customization at costs similar to mass produc-
tion, allowing manufacturers to focus on differentiation with more personalized products.
Mass customization needs fast production changeovers performed by non-specialist opera-
tors, so a highly modular machine design is essential.

Energy efficiency With energy prices endlessly on the rise, machines are being equipped with embedded en-
ergy monitoring features to help optimize consumption. Energy metering modules incor-
porated into the control system provide access to real-time energy consumption data for a
production facility. Centralized acquisition of operating and process data allows for online
performance monitoring and optimization.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

Integrated condition monitoring capabilities and big data analytics enable auto-diagnostics. Direct web
connectivity down to the sensor level allows machines to autonomously ask operators to perform maintenance
tasks. Production, maintenance and engineering teams of machine builders and end users have easy access to
key indicators and full diagnostics via standard web technologies.

Zero tolerance TPM has since become a globally accepted approach to industrial equipment maintenance.
Big data analytics Many industries rely on this model to achieve maximum equipment effectiveness and, ulti-
Web services as standard mately, improved production with zero defects, zero break-downs and zero accidents.

Industry 4.0 makes it possible to aggregate data from all sources (operational data, pro-
duction scheduling, condition monitoring, historical data). Predictive asset analytics turn this
massive volume of data into proactive measures and help identify the right maintenance
strategy to get the most out of every asset.

Smart machines connected to web services are able to request maintenance actions autono-
mously. Operator interfaces take advantage of technologies based on web standards and do
not require dedicated software. Auto-generated diagnostics are integrated in machines and
available on any device with a standard web browser.

Augmented reality Augmented reality makes it easier for operators to obtain in-formation in real time and pro-
vides hands-free web access to repair manuals or service centers.

packaging material. And also brings
down the fuel consumption and the
overall transportation cost.

Besides this, plastics can be
reused and recycled. Plastics, which
have low energy requirements during
production, consume about 25%
less energy in production compared
to other alternatives. This results
in lower emission of CO2 gas.
Thus, when compared to glass or
aluminium plastics results in lighter
environmental footprint.

According to the FICCI-TSMG
report, India is a growing market
for plastics and consumes about
12.8 million metric tonnes (MMT)
of plastics annually against global
consumption of 285 MMT per
year. The plastics and polymer
consumption is growing at an
average rate of 10%. About 30,000
processing units with 113,000
processing machines have created
manufacturing capacity of 30 MMT
per annum in India. This has been
achieved with a 13% CAGR of
processing capacity during last 5
years. The industry has invested $5
billion in the machinery and it is
expected to invest $ 10 billion more
for increasing the capacity during the
next 5 years.

The per capita consumption of
polymers in India during 2014-15
was just 10.5 kg as compared to 109
kg in USA, 45 kg in China and 32
kg in Brazil. The low level of per
capita plastics consumption in India
is indicative of the massive growth
potential of the plastic industry.
Given the rising consumerism and
modern lifestyles, it is expected
that per capita consumption will be
doubled in the next five years,” said
the report.
