Lotus Sametime (Instant Messaging)
Lotus Sametime instant messaging software features that are integrated into the Lotus Notes, give you quick and
easy access to your coworkers. Sametime is simple and versatile so that you can work with colleagues in whatever
way suits your needs. It can help you to communicate more effectively, decrease response times, and reduce the
number of e-mail messages sent back and forth between you and other users of Lotus Notes at the University. It also
allows you to work with others as if they were in the same room without blocking your phone line, and in some cases
saving the cost of a long distance call.
Lotus Sametime capabilities include:
Presence awareness and instant messaging chat
Integration with e-mail and productivity applications such as Microsoft Office, and IBM Lotus Notes
Multi-way chat
Rich text, time stamps, spell check and emoticons
Contact type-ahead search and contact detail display
Local chat history
Contact list management: Sort contact list, Show short names, Show online contacts only
First, you create a contact list that is displayed in the Lotus Notes sidebar:
A contact list contains the names of people you want to be in touch with. From the contact list you can do the
following tasks:
See each person's availability status, whether the person is on-line and available or logged off, and so forth.
Hover the mouse over a name to see information about that person, including photograph and telephone
number.
Right-click (or Control + click on Macintosh) a name whose status is available to display a menu of tasks that you
can perform for that person.
Organize the contact list names into groups and lists that are meaningful to you.
You can exchange text in chats, including font and background color, font size and emphasis; as well as the following
types of information:
Live Web addresses (type in the URL and it will turn into a hot link)
Notes "document links" to Lotus Notes documents, views, and databases
Screen captures of parts of your screen, which you can also annotate
Static, animated, text, and custom emoticons
You can also save chat transcripts to your Lotus Notes mail file or to a local file. Saving chat transcripts provide a
history of the chat messages that you exchanged with your chat partners.
Depending on your licensing agreement, you might also be able to do the following tasks:
Use your computer's audio features and VoIP technology so that everyone participating in a chat can hear and
speak with one another.
View the availability status of, and exchange text chats with, members of public instant messaging communities.
Start an instant meeting immediately or schedule a meeting that starts now or sometime in the future. With
scheduled meetings, you can even choose to schedule repeating meetings and to record meetings.
Start a video call that allows you to speak with and see your chat partners.
Exchange files with your chat partners.
Start a telephone conference call with a simple menu command or click of your mouse, if these features provided
by third-party vendors are available to you.
Add contacts from multiple communities.
