精機光学研究所The company was originally named Seikikōgaku kenkyūsho (Jpn., Precision

Optical Industry Co. Ltd.). In 1934 it produced the Kwanon, a prototype for Japan's first-ever

35 mm camera with a focal-plane-based shutter. In 1947 the company name was changed

観⾳to Canon Camera Co., Inc.,shortened to Canon Inc. in 1969. The name Canon comes from

Buddhist bodhisattva Guan Yin ( , Kannon in Japanese), previously transliterated as

Kuanyin, Kwannon, or Kwanon in English.

Canon manufactures consumer imaging products including printers, scanners, binoculars,
compact digital cameras, film SLR and digital SLR cameras, lenses, video camcorders and
digital visual services. Canon's world headquarters is located at 30-2 Shimomaruko 3-chome,
Ohta-ku, Tokyo 146-8501, Japan. Canon has regional headquarters in America, Europe, Middle
East, Africa, Japan, Asia and Oceania (including Australia & New Zealand).

A report by the environmental organization Clean Air-Cool Planet puts Canon at the top of a
list of 56 companies the survey conducted on climate-friendly companies. Canon has also
launched three new calculators in Europe, called "Green Calculators", which are produced in
part from recycled Canon copiers. The company has a corporate social responsibility strategy
in Europe named 'Green is just a shade of blue'. The strategy places emphasis on green issues
being 'a small part of the bigger, bluer picture', and therefore gives equal importance to other
areas, including ethics, attitudes, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, education, science and
social welfare.

c. reading

Please read the passage below and underline the asking
and giving opinion expression.

Student A: I think that the transportation here is excellent, because there are so many
different options: bus, underground, taxi. I really love the buses here. They run many
different routes, and the cost is quite reasonable, under one pound for most of the
places I go to. What's your opinion?

Student B: I agree with you. The buses are very convenient and cheap. And the subway
is good too, it's not expensive at all.

Student C: That may be true, but you are only considering the cost. If we look at how
frequent the transport is, then it's not so good. For example I often have to wait
twenty or thirty minutes for a bus when I go to the university. It's really not
convenient for me.

Student A: I really don't agree with you. In my opinion the transport is extremely
convenient. As I just said, the buses run many different routes, so you can get
anywhere in the city quite easily. For instance I can take a bus from where I live to the
university, or another
one to the train station, another to the football stadium. They'll all direct and I don't
need to change.

Student B: So you mean that convenience in terms of destination is important in a
good transportation system?

Student A: Yes, that's certainly one aspect. In terms of the buses, there are also the
number of bus stops, which again makes them very convenient.

Student B: Yes, I see.

Student C: I don't think I'd say that. In some ways, the more stops there are, the less
convenient it is. It makes the journey longer. And how about frequency? Isn't that
important too?

Student A: Yes, in my opinion it is. But I don't have any problem with that. I never have
to wait more than about ten minutes for a bus, so in terms of frequency they are very
convenient for me.

Student B: That's what I think too. I never have to wait long for a bus either. It could be
that you're just unlucky with where you live.

The benefits of business coaching

In recent years business coaching has grown, with companies such
as Unilever and KPMG taking part. It can cost up to £3,000 a day.
However, the results are so impressive that some companies want
all their executives to enrol to improve their performance. What
do business coaches do? Basically, they let you talk about the
problems you are having in your professional life and help you set
new goals. They then meet or speak with you regularly to see if you
are achieving those goals. For example, they can find ways for you
to get better sales results, to motivate your team to work better,
or to improve your promotion prospects in your company.
Coaches do not actually make decisions for you, but give you
feedback on your ideas. They can also help you identify what
training you might need to develop your skills. The coaching
experience can be an ideal opportunity to take a step back and
evaluate your lifestyle. The result is often a better work- life balance.
Jeremy Lang, former Chief Executive of Chilprufe, the underwear
manufacturer, said, 'I am working 50% more on my business and
50% less in my business. I am 100% happier.'

A. READING

Multi Tasking: time saver or
time waster?

All too often, multitasking is promoted as an efficient way to meet the complex
demands of our modern society and accomplish more in the same amount of time.
Have you ever attempted to work on a document, however, while cruising the
Internet or talking on the phone? You don't accomplish much, and time
mysteriously disappears. Worse, often you feel as if you haven't done your best.

In both your personal and professional life, attempting to do many things
simultaneously can actually have the opposite effect; it makes your work less
efficient and contributes to stress, and, maddeningly, it leads to more
multitasking.

It's all too easy to fall into a familiar trap: "So much is expected of me, I have to
double and triple my activities." Nevertheless, if you attempt to multitask at home
or at the workplace you're likely mess up something in your day or week. So how
are you supposed to fit in all of your daily tasks without getting so stressed out or
frustrated that you cannot finish any? The answer is: less is more.
